Network-on-Chip Synchronization
Technology scaling has enabled the number of cores within a System on Chip (SoC) to increase significantly. Globally Asynchronous Locally Synchronous (GALS) systems using Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) operate each of these cores on distinct and dynamic clock domains. The main communication method between these cores is increasingly more likely to be a Network-on-Chip (NoC). Typically, the interfaces between these clock domains experience multi-cycle synchronization latencies due to their use of “brute-force” synchronizers. This dissertation aims to improve the performance of NoCs and thereby SoCs as a whole by reducing this synchronization latency.
First, a survey of NoC improvement techniques is presented. One such improvement technique: a multi-layer NoC, has been successfully simulated. Given how one of the most commonly used techniques is DVFS, a thorough analysis and simulation of brute-force synchronizer circuits in both current and future process technologies is presented. Unfortunately, a multi-cycle latency is unavoidable when using brute-force synchronizers, so predictive synchronizers which require only a single cycle of latency have been proposed.
To demonstrate the impact of these predictive synchronizer circuits at a high level, multi-core system simulations incorporating these circuits have been completed. Multiple forms of GALS NoC configurations have been simulated, including multi-synchronous, NoC-synchronous, and single-synchronizer. Speedup on the SPLASH benchmark suite was measured to directly quantify the performance benefit of predictive synchronizers in a full system. Additionally, Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) has been calculated for each NoC synchronizer configuration to determine the reliability benefit possible when using predictive synchronizers
Automated Debugging Methodology for FPGA-based Systems
Electronic devices make up a vital part of our lives. These are seen from mobiles, laptops, computers, home automation, etc. to name a few. The modern designs constitute billions of transistors. However, with this evolution, ensuring that the devices fulfill the designer’s expectation under variable conditions has also become a great challenge. This requires a lot of design time and effort. Whenever an error is encountered, the process is re-started. Hence, it is desired to minimize the number of spins required to achieve an error-free product, as each spin results in loss of time and effort.
Software-based simulation systems present the main technique to ensure the verification of the design before fabrication. However, few design errors (bugs) are likely to escape the simulation process. Such bugs subsequently appear during the post-silicon phase. Finding such bugs is time-consuming due to inherent invisibility of the hardware. Instead of software simulation of the design in the pre-silicon phase, post-silicon techniques permit the designers to verify the functionality through the physical implementations of the design. The main benefit of the methodology is that the implemented design in the post-silicon phase runs many order-of-magnitude faster than its counterpart in pre-silicon. This allows the designers to validate their design more exhaustively.
This thesis presents five main contributions to enable a fast and automated debugging solution for reconfigurable hardware. During the research work, we used an obstacle avoidance system for robotic vehicles as a use case to illustrate how to apply the proposed debugging solution in practical environments.
The first contribution presents a debugging system capable of providing a lossless trace of debugging data which permits a cycle-accurate replay. This methodology ensures capturing permanent as well as intermittent errors in the implemented design. The contribution also describes a solution to enhance hardware observability. It is proposed to utilize processor-configurable concentration networks, employ debug data compression to transmit the data more efficiently, and partially reconfiguring the debugging system at run-time to save the time required for design re-compilation as well as preserve the timing closure.
The second contribution presents a solution for communication-centric designs. Furthermore, solutions for designs with multi-clock domains are also discussed.
The third contribution presents a priority-based signal selection methodology to identify the signals which can be more helpful during the debugging process. A connectivity generation tool is also presented which can map the identified signals to the debugging system.
The fourth contribution presents an automated error detection solution which can help in capturing the permanent as well as intermittent errors without continuous monitoring of debugging data. The proposed solution works for designs even in the absence of golden reference.
The fifth contribution proposes to use artificial intelligence for post-silicon debugging. We presented a novel idea of using a recurrent neural network for debugging when a golden reference is present for training the network. Furthermore, the idea was also extended to designs where golden reference is not present
A multi-synchronous bi-directional NoC (MBiNoC) architecture with dynamic self-reconfigurable channel for the GALS infrastructure
Abstract To enhance the performance of on-chip communications of Globally Asynchronous Locally Synchronous Systems (GALS), a dynamic reconfigurable multi-synchronous router architecture
is proposed to increase network on chip (NoC) efficiency by changing the path of the communication link in the runtime traffic situation. In order to address GALS issues and bandwidth requirements, the proposed multi-synchronous bidirectional NoC’s router is developed and it guarantees higher packet consumption rate, better bandwidth utilization with lower packet delivery latency. All the input/output ports of the proposed router behave as a bi-directional ports and communicate through a novel multi-synchronous first-in first-out (FIFO) buffer. The bidirectional port is controlled by a dynamic channel control module which provides a dynamic reconfigurable channel to the router itself and associated sub-modules. This proposed multi-synchronous bidirectional router architecture is synthesized using Xilinx ISE 14.7 and FPGA Virtex 6 family device XC6VLX760 is considered as target technology and its performance is evaluated in terms of power, area and delay.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Elastic bundles :modelling and architecting asynchronous circuits with granular rigidity

The complexity of designing a SoC has increased rapidly over the years due to growing
process and environmental variations coupled with global clock distribution di culty.
Moreover, traditional synchronous design is not apt to handle the heterogeneous timing
nature of modern SoCs. As a countermeasure, the semiconductor industry witnessed
a strong revival of asynchronous design principles. A new paradigm of digital circuits
emerged, as a result, namely mixed synchronous-asynchronous circuits. With a wave
of recent innovations in synchronous-asynchronous CAD integration, this paradigm is
showing signs of commercial adoption in future SoCs mainly due to the scope for reuse
of synchronous functional blocks and IP cores, and the co-existence of synchronous and
asynchronous design styles in a common EDA framework.
However, there is a lack of formal methods and tools to facilitate mixed synchronousasynchronous
design. In this thesis, we propose a formal model based on Petri nets with
step semantics to describe these circuits behaviourally. Implication of this model in the
veri cation and synthesis of mixed synchronous-asynchronous circuits is studied. Till
date, this paradigm has been mainly explored on the basis of Globally Asynchronous
Locally Synchronous (GALS) systems. Despite decades of research, GALS design has
failed to gain traction commercially. To understand its drawbacks, a simulation framework
characterising the physical and functional aspects of GALS SoCs is presented.
A novel method for synthesising mixed synchronous-asynchronous circuits with varying
levels of rigidity is proposed. Starting with a high-level data ow model of a system which
is intrinsically asynchronous, the key idea is to introduce rigidity of chosen granularity
levels in the model without changing functional behaviour. The system is then partitioned
into functional blocks of synchronous and asynchronous elements before being transformed
into an equivalent circuit which can be synthesised using standard EDA tools
Design and Verification of Clock Domain Crossing Interfaces
The clock distribution network is an essential component in every synchronous digital system. The design of this network is becoming an increasingly sophisticated and difficult task due to the increasing logic capacity of chips and due to the fact that this network has to reach out to each and every memory element in the chip. Multiclock domain circuits with Clock Domain Crossing (CDC) interfaces are emerging
as an alternative to circuits with a global clock. The design of CDC interfaces is a challenging task due to the difficulty of dealing with two possibly unrelated clock
domains and the possibility of propagating metastability into the communicating blocks making CDC interfaces difficult to design and verify. In this work, we present
a hybrid FIFO-asynchronous method for constructing robust CDC interfaces. This method avoids the shortcomings of previous interfaces and provides reliable transfer
of data and control signals between different clock domains. A complete design is proposed, fully implemented using 90nm TSMC CMOS technology, and simulated using SPICE. Extensive simulations confirmed the robustness of the interface at different temperatures, different workloads, and varying frequency ratios. The reported implementation provides a maximum throughput of 606 Mitems/s. Moreover, we
also address the challenging task of the verification of CDC interfaces. Most RTL simulation tools available today are incapable of simulating these interfaces. In this
thesis, we present a framework for the formal verification of CDC interfaces. The framework explicitly models metastability by taking advantage of the unique features
of probabilistic model checking. The framework is applied to common CDC interfaces by verifying them using the PRISM model checker
Virtual Runtime Application Partitions for Resource Management in Massively Parallel Architectures
This thesis presents a novel design paradigm, called Virtual Runtime Application Partitions (VRAP), to judiciously utilize the on-chip resources. As the dark silicon era approaches, where the power considerations will allow only a fraction chip to be powered on, judicious resource management will become a key consideration in future designs. Most of the works on resource management treat only the physical components (i.e. computation, communication, and memory blocks) as resources and manipulate the component to application mapping to optimize various parameters (e.g. energy efficiency). To further enhance the optimization potential, in addition to the physical resources we propose to manipulate abstract resources (i.e. voltage/frequency operating point, the fault-tolerance strength, the degree of parallelism, and the configuration architecture). The proposed framework (i.e. VRAP) encapsulates methods, algorithms, and hardware blocks to provide each application with the abstract resources tailored to its needs. To test the efficacy of this concept, we have developed three distinct self adaptive environments: (i) Private Operating Environment (POE), (ii) Private Reliability Environment (PRE), and (iii) Private Configuration Environment (PCE) that collectively ensure that each application meets its deadlines using minimal platform resources. In this work several novel architectural enhancements, algorithms and policies are presented to realize the virtual runtime application partitions efficiently. Considering the future design trends, we have chosen Coarse Grained Reconfigurable Architectures (CGRAs) and Network on Chips (NoCs) to test the feasibility of our approach. Specifically, we have chosen Dynamically Reconfigurable Resource Array (DRRA) and McNoC as the representative CGRA and NoC platforms. The proposed techniques are compared and evaluated using a variety of quantitative experiments. Synthesis and simulation results demonstrate VRAP significantly enhances the energy and power efficiency compared to state of the art.Siirretty Doriast
Inter-module Interfacing techniques for SoCs with multiple clock domains to address challenges in modern deep sub-micron technologies
Miniaturization of integrated circuits (ICs) due to the improvement in lithographic techniques in modem deep sub-micron (DSM) technologies allows several complex processing elements to coexist in one IC, which are called System-on-Chip. As a first contribution, this thesis quantitatively analyzes the severity of timing constraints associated with Clock Distribution Network (CDN) in modem DSM technologies and shows that different processing elements may work in different dock domains to alleviate these constraints. Such systems are known as Globally Asynchronous Locally Synchronous (GALS) systems. It is imperative that different processing elements of a GALS system need to communicate with each other through some interfacing technique, and these interfaces can be asynchronous or synchronous. Conventionally, the asynchronous interfaces are described at the Register Transfer Logic (RTL) or system level. Such designs are susceptible to certain design constraints that cannot be addressed at higher abstraction levels; crosstalk glitch is one such constraint. This thesis initially identifies, using an analytical model, the possibility of asynchronous interface malfunction due to crosstalk glitch propagation. Next, we characterize crosstalk glitch propagation under normal operating conditions for two different classes of asynchronous protocols, namely bundled data protocol based and delay insensitive asynchronous designs. Subsequently, we propose a logic abstraction level modeling technique, which provides a framework to the designer to verify the asynchronous protocols against crosstalk glitches. The utility of this modeling technique is demonstrated experimentally on a Xilinx Virtex-II Pro FPGA. Furthermore, a novel methodology is proposed to quench such crosstalk glitch propagation through gating the asynchronous interface from sending the signal during potential glitch vulnerable instances. This methodology is termed as crosstalk glitch gating. This technique is successfully applied to obtain crosstalk glitch quenching in the representative interfaces. This thesis also addresses the dock skew challenges faced by high-performance synchronous interfacing methodologies in modem DSM technologies. The proposed methodology allows communicating modules to run at a frequency that is independent of the dock skew. Leveraging a novel clock-scheduling algorithm, our technique permits a faster module to communicate safely with a slower module without slowing down. Safe data communications for mesochronous schemes and for the cases when communicating modules have dock frequency ratios of integer or coprime numbers are theoretically explained and experimentally demonstrated. A clock-scheduling technique to dynamically accommodate phase variations is also proposed. These methods are implemented to the Xilinx Virtex II Pro technology. Experiments prove that the proposed interfacing scheme allows modules to communicate data safely, for mesochronous schemes, at 350 MHz, which is the limit of the technology used, under a dock skew of more than twice the time period (i.e. a dock skew of 12 ns
Design of robust asynchronous reconfigurable controllers for parallel synchronization using embedded graphs

As the number of operating points under consideration increases, specifications
which are capable of altering key parameters such as the time available for
synchronization and Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) in response to input from
the user/system become desirable. This thesis explores how a combination of parallelism
and scheduling, referred to as wagging, can be utilized to construct schedulers
for synchronizer designs which are capable of pooling the gain-bandwidth
products of their composite devices, in order to satisfy this requirement.
In this work, we explore the ways in which the areas of graph theory and reconfigurable
hardware design can be applied to generate both combinational and sequential
scheduler designs, which satisfy the behavior requirement above. Further
to this point, this work illustrates that such a scheduler is primarily comprised of
an interrupt subsystem, and a reconfigurable token ring. This thesis explores how
both of these components can be controlled in absence of a clock signal, as well as
the design challenges inherent to each part.
The final noteworthy issue in this study is with regard to the flow control of
data in a parallel synchronizer that incorporates a First-In First-Out (FIFO) buffer
to decouple the reading and writing operations from each other. Such a structure
incurs penalties if the data rates on both sides are not well matched. This work
presents a method by which combinations of serial and parallel reading operations
are used to minimize this mismatch
