Design/methodology/approach: This paper presents an exhaustive literature review, identifying the existing models where the activities duration were taken as uncertain or random parameters. In order to get published articles since 1996, was employed the Scopus database. The articles were selected on the basis of reviews of abstracts, methodologies, and conclusions. The results were classified according to following characteristics: year of publication, mathematical representation of the activities duration, solution techniques applied, and type of problem solved. Findings: Genetic Algorithms (GA) was pointed out as the main solution technique employed by researchers, and the Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP) as the most studied type of problem. On the other hand, the application of new solution techniques, and the possibility of incorporating traditional methods into new PSP variants was presented as research trends. Originality/value: This literature review contents not only a descriptive analysis of the published articles but also a statistical information section in order to examine the state of the research activity carried out in relation to the Project Scheduling Problem with non-deterministic activities duration.Peer Reviewe

Overview of Multi-Objective Optimization Approaches in Construction Project Management

    Get PDF
The difficulties that are met in construction projects include budget issues, contractual time constraints, complying with sustainability rating systems, meeting local building codes, and achieving the desired quality level, to name but a few. Construction researchers have proposed and construction practitioners have used optimization strategies to meet various objectives over the years. They started out by optimizing one objective at a time (e.g., minimizing construction cost) while disregarding others. Because the objectives of construction projects often conflict with each other, single-objective optimization does not offer practical solutions as optimizing one objective would often adversely affect the other objectives that are not being optimized. They then experimented with multi-objective optimization. The many multi-objective optimization approaches that they used have their own advantages and drawbacks when used in some scenarios with different sets of objectives. In this chapter, a review is presented of 16 multi-objective optimization approaches used in 55 research studies performed in the construction industry and that were published in the period 2012–2016. The discussion highlights the strengths and weaknesses of these approaches when used in different scenarios

A Hierarchical, Fuzzy Inference Approach to Data Filtration and Feature Prioritization in the Connected Manufacturing Enterprise

    Get PDF
The current big data landscape is one such that the technology and capability to capture and storage of data has preceded and outpaced the corresponding capability to analyze and interpret it. This has led naturally to the development of elegant and powerful algorithms for data mining, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to harness the potential of the big data environment. A competing reality, however, is that limitations exist in how and to what extent human beings can process complex information. The convergence of these realities is a tension between the technical sophistication or elegance of a solution and its transparency or interpretability by the human data scientist or decision maker. This dissertation, contextualized in the connected manufacturing enterprise, presents an original Fuzzy Approach to Feature Reduction and Prioritization (FAFRAP) approach that is designed to assist the data scientist in filtering and prioritizing data for inclusion in supervised machine learning models. A set of sequential filters reduces the initial set of independent variables, and a fuzzy inference system outputs a crisp numeric value associated with each feature to rank order and prioritize for inclusion in model training. Additionally, the fuzzy inference system outputs a descriptive label to assist in the interpretation of the feature’s usefulness with respect to the problem of interest. Model testing is performed using three publicly available datasets from an online machine learning data repository and later applied to a case study in electronic assembly manufacture. Consistency of model results is experimentally verified using Fisher’s Exact Test, and results of filtered models are compared to results obtained by the unfiltered sets of features using a proposed novel metric of performance-size ratio (PSR)

Time-Cost Tradeoff and Resource-Scheduling Problems in Construction: A State-of-the-Art Review

    Get PDF
Duration, cost, and resources are defined as constraints in projects. Consequently, Construction manager needs to balance between theses constraints to ensure that project objectives are met. Choosing the best alternative of each activity is one of the most significant problems in construction management to minimize project duration, project cost and also satisfies resources constraints as well as smoothing resources. Advanced computer technologies could empower construction engineers and project managers to make right, fast and applicable decisions based on accurate data that can be studied, optimized, and quantified with great accuracy. This article strives to find the recent improvements of resource-scheduling problems and time-cost trade off and the interacting between them which can be used in innovating new approaches in construction management. To achieve this goal, a state-of-the-art review, is conducted as a literature sample including articles implying three areas of research; time-cost trade off, constrained resources and unconstrained resources. A content analysis is made to clarify contributions and gaps of knowledge to help suggesting and specifying opportunities for future research

Working Notes from the 1992 AAAI Spring Symposium on Practical Approaches to Scheduling and Planning

    Get PDF
The symposium presented issues involved in the development of scheduling systems that can deal with resource and time limitations. To qualify, a system must be implemented and tested to some degree on non-trivial problems (ideally, on real-world problems). However, a system need not be fully deployed to qualify. Systems that schedule actions in terms of metric time constraints typically represent and reason about an external numeric clock or calendar and can be contrasted with those systems that represent time purely symbolically. The following topics are discussed: integrating planning and scheduling; integrating symbolic goals and numerical utilities; managing uncertainty; incremental rescheduling; managing limited computation time; anytime scheduling and planning algorithms, systems; dependency analysis and schedule reuse; management of schedule and plan execution; and incorporation of discrete event techniques

ROBUST RESOURCE INVESTMENT PROBLEM WITH TIME-DEPENDENT RESOURCE COST AND TARDINESS PENALTY

The Resource Investment Problem (RIP) is a variant of the well-known Resource Constraint Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP) that requires finding the optimal resource allocation, given a preset completion date, with the objective of minimizing the total cost. The practical relevance of RIP is very obvious; since the decision maker (the project manager for example) wants to know what resources are required to achieve the targeted project completion date. RIP helps to decide the amount of investment in resources that yield the optimal solution, in addition to the optimal tradeoff between completion time and resource investment. In practice, most of the projects are associated with due dates beyond which a tardiness penalty may be applied. To avoid the tardiness penalty, project managers sometimes decide to add more resources, thereby increasing resource investment cost, to the project to finish earlier. In this thesis the (RIP) has been extended to consider time-depended resource cost instead of time-independent resource cost in the classical RIP. The problem was named Resource Investment Problem with Time-Dependent Resource Cost and Tardiness Penalty, abbreviated as (RIP-TDRC). A mathematical model was introduced to simultaneously find the optimal resource assignment and activity staring times. The objective is to minimize the sum of the resources and tardiness cost. Two versions of this problem are addressed in this thesis: the deterministic version of RIP-TDRC and the stochastic version. For the latter, it is assumed that the activity durations are subject to many uncertainties such as (bad weather conditions, material shortage, employee’s absences …etc.). To solve this problem, a simulation-optimization based algorithm is proposed. This algorithm solves the deterministic problem version iteratively through all possible project completion times and simulates the project considering the uncertainties to find the optimal solution. The performance of the proposed algorithm and the effect of some problem parameters on the solution are assessed through computational experiments. The experiments revealed the usefulness of the algorithm in finding relatively robust solution for small problem sizes

Adapted Branch-and-Bound Algorithm Using SVM With Model Selection

    Get PDF
Branch-and-Bound algorithm is the basis for the majority of solving methods in mixed integer linear programming. It has been proving its efficiency in different fields. In fact, it creates little by little a tree of nodes by adopting two strategies. These strategies are variable selection strategy and node selection strategy. In our previous work, we experienced a methodology of learning branch-and-bound strategies using regression-based support vector machine twice. That methodology allowed firstly to exploit information from previous executions of Branch-and-Bound algorithm on other instances. Secondly, it created information channel between node selection strategy and variable branching strategy. And thirdly, it gave good results in term of running time comparing to standard Branch-and-Bound algorithm. In this work, we will focus on increasing SVM performance by using cross validation coupled with model selection.

An integer linear programming model including time, cost, quality, and safety

Time, cost, quality and safety, are the four critical elements that contribute to project success. Traditionally, literature has focused on analysing only time and cost. Subsequently, other multi-objective optimization methods developed to optimize time, cost, quality or safety have been developed. New types of contracting methods designed by governments, included maximizing construction quality while minimizing its time and cost. Recently, due to the fact that the construction industry suffers from more accidents of greater severity than other industrial sectors, safety has become one of the four critical elements that contribute to project success. The project scheduling literature largely concentrates on the generation of a precedence and resource feasible schedule that optimizes the scheduling objective and that should serve as a baseline schedule for executing the project. However, these models do not allow to analyse alternative work plans that consider the trade-offs between time, cost, quality, and safety. In this paper, an integer linear programming problem is applied to a decision-CPM network in order to obtain an overall optimum including time, cost, quality and safety in a road building project. Using this type of model, the effects of alternative methods of performing the tasks can be considered and a greater degree of interaction between the planning and scheduling phases of a project is obtained

It is based on the TEMPO Military Planning Game that has been used to teach resource allocation to over 20 000 students over the past 40 years. No feasible algorithm for optimal play is known. The coevolved rules, when pitted against human players, usually win the first few competitions. For reasons not yet understood, the evolved rules (found in a symmetrical competition) place little value on information concerning the play of the opponent.Rodney W. Johnson, Michael E. A novel Multiple Objective Symbiotic Organisms Search (MOSOS) for time–cost–labor utilization tradeoff problem

Multiple work shifts are commonly utilized in construction projects to meet project requirements. Nevertheless, evening and night shifts raise the risk of adverse events and thus must be used to the minimum extent feasible. Tradeoff optimization among project duration (time), project cost, and the utilization of evening and night work shifts while maintaining with all job logic and resource availability constraints is necessary to enhance overall construction project success. In this study, a novel approach called “Multiple Objective Symbiotic Organisms Search” (MOSOS) to solve multiple work shifts problem is introduced. The MOSOS algorithm is new meta-heuristic based multi-objective optimization techniques inspired by the symbiotic interaction strategies that organisms use to survive in the ecosystem. A numerical case study of construction projects were studied and the performance of MOSOS is evaluated in comparison with other widely used algorithms which includes non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II), the multiple objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO), the multiple objective differential evolution (MODE), and the multiple objective artificial bee colony (MOABC). The numerical results demonstrate MOSOS approach is a powerful search and optimization technique in finding optimization of work shift schedules that is it can assist project managers in selecting appropriate plan for project
