    Particle swarm optimised fuzzy controller for charging–discharging and scheduling of battery energy storage system in MG applications

    © 2020 The Authors Aiming at reducing the power consumption and costs of grids, this paper deals with the development of particle swarm optimisation (PSO) based fuzzy logic controller (FLC) for charging–discharging and scheduling of the battery energy storage systems (ESSs) in microgrid (MG) applications. Initially, FLC was developed to control the charging–discharging of the storage system to avoid mathematical calculation of the conventional system. However, to improve the charging–discharging control, the membership function of the FLC is optimised using PSO technique considering the available power, load demand, battery temperature and state of charge (SOC). The scheduling controller is the optimal solution to achieve low-cost uninterrupted reliable power according to the loads. To reduce the grid power demand and consumption costs, an optimal binary PSO is also introduced to schedule the ESS, grid and distributed sources under various load conditions at different times of the day. The obtained results proved that the robustness of the developed PSO based fuzzy control can effectively manage the battery charging–discharging with reducing the significant grid power consumption of 42.26% and the costs of the energy usage by 45.11% which also demonstrates the contribution of the research

    On-demand fuzzy clustering and ant-colony optimisation based mobile data collection in wireless sensor network

    In a wireless sensor network (WSN), sensor nodes collect data from the environment and transfer this data to an end user through multi-hop communication. This results in high energy dissipation of the devices. Thus, balancing of energy consumption is a major concern in such kind of network. Appropriate cluster head (CH) selection may provide to be an efficient way to reduce the energy dissipation and prolonging the network lifetime in WSN. This paper has adopted the concept of fuzzy if-then rules to choose the cluster head based on certain fuzzy descriptors. To optimise the fuzzy membership functions, Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) has been used to improve their ranges. Moreover, recent study has confirmed that the introduction of a mobile collector in a network which collects data through short-range communications also aids in high energy conservation. In this work, the network is divided into clusters and a mobile collector starts from the static sink or base station and moves through each of these clusters and collect data from the chosen cluster heads in a single-hop fashion. Mobility based on Ant-Colony Optimisation (ACO) has already proven to be an efficient method which is utilised in this work. Additionally, instead of performing clustering in every round, CH is selected on demand. The performance of the proposed algorithm has been compared with some existing clustering algorithms. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol is more energy-efficient and provides better packet delivery ratio as compared to the existing protocols for data collection obtained through Matlab Simulations

    The ineffectiveness of the wall-following robot (WFR) performance indicated by its surging movement has been a concerning issue. The use of a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) has been considered to be an option to mitigate this problem. However, the determination of the membership function of the input value precisely adds to this problem. For this reason, a particular manner is recommended to improve the performance of FLC. This paper describes an optimization method, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), used to automatically determinate and arrange the FLC’s input membership function. The proposed method is simulated and validated by using MATLAB. The results are compared in terms of accumulative error. According to all the comparative results, the stability and effectiveness of the proposed method have been significantly satisfied

    A Review Of Battery Charging - Discharging Management Controller: A Proposed Conceptual Battery Storage Charging – Discharging Centralized Controller

    This paper describes the development of a centralized controller to charge or discharge the battery storages that are connected to renewable energy sources. The centralized controller is able to assist, control, and manage the battery storage charging when excessive power is available from renewable energy sources. At the same time, the centralized controller also performs battery storage discharging when the connected load requires a power source, especially when the renewable energy sources are unavailable. Background studies regarding battery storage charging-discharging are presented in the introduction section. Also, generally developed charging discharging methods or techniques were applied at the system level and not specifically to the battery storage system level. Due to the limited study on battery storage system charging discharging, this paper reviews some of the similar studies in order to understand the battery storage charging–discharging characteristics as well as to propose a new conceptual methodology for the proposed centralized controller. The battery storage State-of-Charge (SoC) is used as the criterion to develop the conceptual centralized controller, which is also used as a switching characteristic between charging or discharging when only the battery energy storages are supplying the output power to the connected load. Therefore, this paper mainly focuses on the conceptual methodology as well as explaining the functionality and operationality of the proposed centralized controller. A summarized comparison based on the studied charging– discharging systems with the proposed centralized controller is presented to indicate the validity of the proposed centralized controller

    Energy efficient in cluster head and relay node selection for wireless sensor networks

    Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are defined as networks of nodes that work in a cooperative way to sense and control the surrounding environment. However, nodes contain limited energy which is the key limiting factor of the sensor network operation. In WSN architecture, the nodes are typically grouped into clusters where one node from each cluster is selected as the Cluster Head (CH) and relays utilisation to minimise energy consumption. Currently, the selection of CH based on a different combination of input variables. Example of these variables includes residual energy, communication cost, node density, mobility, cluster size and many others. Improper selection of sensor node (i.e. weak signal strength) as CH can cause an increase in energy consumption. Additionally, a direct transmission in dual-hop communication between sensor nodes (e.g. CH) with the base station (BS) uses high energy consumption. A proper selection of the relay node can assist in communication while minimising energy consumption. Therefore, the research aim is to prolong the network lifetime (i.e. reduce energy consumption) by improving the selection of CHs and relay nodes through a new combination of input variables and distance threshold approach. In CH selection, the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) scheme, residual energy, and centrality variable were proposed. Fuzzy logic was utilized in selecting the appropriate CHs based on these variables in the MATLAB. In relay node selection, the selection is based on the distance threshold according to the nearest distance with the BS. The selection of the optimal number of relay nodes is performed using K-Optimal and K-Means techniques. This ensures that all CHs are connected to at least one corresponding relay node (i.e. a 2-tier network) to execute the routing process and send the data to BS. To evaluate the proposal, the performance of Multi-Tier Protocol (MAP) and Stable Election Protocol (SEP) was compared based on 100, 200, and 800 nodes with 1 J and random energy. The simulation results showed that our proposed approach, refer to as Energy Efficient Cluster Heads and Relay Nodes (EECR) selection approach, extended the network lifetime of the wireless sensor network by 43% and 33% longer than SEP and MAP, respectively. This thesis concluded that with effective combinations of variables for CHs and relay nodes selection in static environment for data routing, EECR can effectively improve the energy efficiency of WSNs

    Toward Energy-Oriented Optimization for Green Communication in Sensor Enabled IoT Environments

    [EN] One of the major bottlenecks toward realizing IoT systems is the energy constraint of sensors. Prolonging network lifetime is a fundamental issue for implementing IoT systems. The energy optimization problem, being NP-hard in nature for scalable networks, has been addressed in the literature using traditional metaheuristic techniques. Quantum inspired metaheuristics have shown better performance than their traditional counterparts in solving such optimization problems in different domains. Toward this end, this article proposes a quantum inspired green communication framework for Energy Balancing in sensor enabled IoT systems (Q-EBIoT). First, an energy optimization model for sensor enabled IoT environments is presented, where energy consumption is derived as cost of the energy-oriented paths. Second, a quantum computing oriented solution is developed for the optimization problem focusing on energy centric solution representation, measurement, and rotation angle. The proposed solution is implemented to evaluate the comparative performance with the state-of-the-art techniques.     An improved data classification framework based on fractional particle swarm optimization

    Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a population based stochastic optimization technique which consist of particles that move collectively in iterations to search for the most optimum solutions. However, conventional PSO is prone to lack of convergence and even stagnation in complex high dimensional-search problems with multiple local optima. Therefore, this research proposed an improved Mutually-Optimized Fractional PSO (MOFPSO) algorithm based on fractional derivatives and small step lengths to ensure convergence to global optima by supplying a fine balance between exploration and exploitation. The proposed algorithm is tested and verified for optimization performance comparison on ten benchmark functions against six existing established algorithms in terms of Mean of Error and Standard Deviation values. The proposed MOFPSO algorithm demonstrated lowest Mean of Error values during the optimization on all benchmark functions through all 30 runs (Ackley = 0.2, Rosenbrock = 0.2, Bohachevsky = 9.36E-06, Easom = -0.95, Griewank = 0.01, Rastrigin = 2.5E-03, Schaffer = 1.31E-06, Schwefel 1.2 = 3.2E-05, Sphere = 8.36E-03, Step = 0). Furthermore, the proposed MOFPSO algorithm is hybridized with Back-Propagation (BP), Elman Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) and Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) to propose an enhanced data classification framework, especially for data classification applications. The proposed classification framework is then evaluated for classification accuracy, computational time and Mean Squared Error on five benchmark datasets against seven existing techniques. It can be concluded from the simulation results that the proposed MOFPSO-ERNN classification algorithm demonstrated good classification performance in terms of classification accuracy (Breast Cancer = 99.01%, EEG = 99.99%, PIMA Indian Diabetes = 99.37%, Iris = 99.6%, Thyroid = 99.88%) as compared to the existing hybrid classification techniques. Hence, the proposed technique can be employed to improve the overall classification accuracy and reduce the computational time in data classification applications

    ENHANCING THE PERFORMANCE OF THE WALL-FOLLOWING ROBOT BASED ON FLC-GA

    Determination of the improper speed of the wall-following robot will produce a wavy motion. This common problem can be solved by adding a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) to the system. The usage of FLC is very influential on the performance of the wall-following robot. Accuracy in the determination of speed is largely based on the setting of the membership function that becomes the value of its input. So manual setting on membership function can still be enhanced by approaching the certain optimization method. This paper describes an optimization method based on Genetic Algorithm (GA). It is used to improving the ability of FLC to control the wall-following robot controlled by FLC. To provide clarity, the wall-following robot that controlled using an FLC with manual settings will be simulated and compared with the performance of wall-following robots controlled by a fuzzy logic controller optimized by a Genetic Algorithm (FLC-GA). According to comparative results, the proposed method has been showing effectiveness in terms of stability indicated by a small error
