    Multidimensional Modeling of Type I X-ray Bursts. I. Two-Dimensional Convection Prior to the Outburst of a Pure Helium Accretor

    We present multidimensional simulations of the early convective phase preceding ignition in a Type I X-ray burst using the low Mach number hydrodynamics code, MAESTRO. A low Mach number approach is necessary in order to perform long-time integration required to study such phenomena. Using MAESTRO, we are able to capture the expansion of the atmosphere due to large-scale heating while capturing local compressibility effects such as those due to reactions and thermal diffusion. We also discuss the preparation of one-dimensional initial models and the subsequent mapping into our multidimensional framework. Our method of initial model generation differs from that used in previous multidimensional studies, which evolved a system through multiple bursts in one dimension before mapping onto a multidimensional grid. In our multidimensional simulations, we find that the resolution necessary to properly resolve the burning layer is an order of magnitude greater than that used in the earlier studies mentioned above.     Summary-based inference of quantitative bounds of live heap objects

    This article presents a symbolic static analysis for computing parametric upper bounds of the number of simultaneously live objects of sequential Java-like programs. Inferring the peak amount of irreclaimable objects is the cornerstone for analyzing potential heap-memory consumption of stand-alone applications or libraries. The analysis builds method-level summaries quantifying the peak number of live objects and the number of escaping objects. Summaries are built by resorting to summaries of their callees. The usability, scalability and precision of the technique is validated by successfully predicting the object heap usage of a medium-size, real-life application which is significantly larger than other previously reported case-studies.Fil: Braberman, Victor Adrian.     Kajian awal yang telah dijalankan mendapati pelajar Kejuruteraan Awam KUiTTHO menghadapi masalah kognitif dalam pembelajaran mata pelajaran Rekabentuk Struktur khasnya dalam pemahaman konsep dan prosedur reka bentuk. Langkah pengiraan yang terlalu banyak selalunya mengelirukan pelajar sehinggakan mereka hilang minat dan tumpuan. Bagi membantu mereka, satu program telah disediakan dengan menggunakan perisian Microsoft Excel bagi tujuan menganalisis dan mereka bentuk rasuk keluli bagi meningkatkan tahap kemahiran kognitif terhadap matapelajaran tersebut. Program Rekabentuk Rasuk Keluli (PRRK) ini disediakan berdasarkan kaedah reka bentuk yang diamalkan oleh British Standard Institution, Structural Use of Steel Work In Building. Seramai dua puluh satu orang pelajar semester akhir Diploma Kejuruteraan A warn yang mengambil mata pelajaran Rekabentuk Struktur telah diminta menilai program ini. Penilaian telah dijalankan terhadap isi, sifat mesra pengguna dan kebolehlaksanaan program menggunakan kaedah skor min. Selain itu perkaitan antara pengalaman pelajar menggunakan komputer sebagai sumber pembelajaran dengan penilaian PRRK juga telah dilihat. Keputusan skor min menunjukkan isi PRKK adalah baik, bersifat mesra pengguna dan mempunyai sifat kebolehlaksanaan. Ujian korelasi Spearman pula menunjukkan bahawa tidak terdapat sebarang perkaitan yang signifikan di antara pengalaman pelajar menggunakan komputer sebagai sumber pembelajaran dengan penilaian PRRK

    The processor survey shows the general principles and understanding of quality for the processing of organic food from the processors’ point of view. In addition, possible problem areas regarding the question of product quality such as raw material, processing techniques, storage etc. are worked out. The results of the survey support the identification and definition of critical and essential control points as well as product quality parameters. This survey can therefore conclude three points of actions to improve the process quality. - Handling of raw material: transportation, storage, pre-processing - Nutritional, safety and sensory QCCP - Cooking: time and temperature - Nutritional and sensory QCCP - Preserving/ sterilizations - Nutritional and safety QCCP Besides these QCCPs, organic baby food should break away from the baby food market and constitute a nutritional rich, environmentally friendly and safe product of high quality

    Record Russian river discharge in 2007 and the limits of analysis

    The Arctic water cycle has experienced an unprecedented degree of change which may have planetary-scale impacts. The year 2007 in particular not only was unique in terms of minimum sea ice extent in the Arctic Ocean but also was a record breaking year for Eurasian river inflow to the Arctic Ocean. Over the observational period from 1936 to 2006, the mean annual river discharge for the six largest Russian rivers was 1796 km3 y−1, with the previous record high being 2080 km3 y−1, in 2002. The year 2007 showed a massive flux of fresh water from these six drainage basins of 2254 km3 y−1. We investigated the hydroclimatological conditions for such extreme river discharge and found that while that year\u27s flow was unusually high, the overall spatial patterns were consistent with the hydroclimatic trends since 1980, indicating that 2007 was not an aberration but a part of the general trend. We wanted to extend our hydroclimatological analysis of river discharge anomalies to seasonal and monthly time steps; however, there were limits to such analyses due to the direct human impact on the river systems. Using reconstructions of the naturalized hydrographs over the Yenisey basin we defined the limits to analysis due to the effect of reservoirs on river discharge. For annual time steps the trends are less impacted by dam construction, whereas for seasonal and monthly time steps these data are confounded by the two sources of change, and the climate change signals were overwhelmed by the human-induced river impoundments. We offer two solutions to this problem; first, we recommend wider use of algorithms to \u27naturalize\u27 the river discharge data and, second, we suggest the identification of a network of existing and stable river monitoring sites to be used for climate change analysis

    Influence of gas compression on flame acceleration in the early stage of burning in tubes

    The mechanism of finger flame acceleration at the early stage of burning in tubes was studied experimentally by Clanet and Searby [Combust. Flame 105: 225 (1996)] for slow propane-air flames, and elucidated analytically and computationally by Bychkov et al. [Combust. Flame 150: 263 (2007)] in the limit of incompressible flow. We have now analytically, experimentally and computationally studied the finger flame acceleration for fast burning flames, when the gas compressibility assumes an important role. Specifically, we have first developed a theory through small Mach number expansion up to the first-order terms, demonstrating that gas compression reduces the acceleration rate and the maximum flame tip velocity, and thereby moderates the finger flame acceleration noticeably. This is an important quantitative correction to previous theoretical analysis. We have also conducted experiments for hydrogen-oxygen mixtures with considerable initial values of the Mach number, showing finger flame acceleration with the acceleration rate much smaller than those obtained previously for hydrocarbon flames. Furthermore, we have performed numerical simulations for a wide range of initial laminar flame velocities, with the results substantiating the experiments. It is shown that the theory is in good quantitative agreement with numerical simulations for small gas compression (small initial flame velocities). Similar to previous works, the numerical simulation shows that finger flame acceleration is followed by the formation of the "tulip" flame, which indicates termination of the early acceleration process.Comment: 19 pages, 20 figure

    Stirring and transport enhancement in a continuously modulated free-surface flow

    The transport of fluid from a recirculation region adjacent to a free surface is studied using a numerical method validated with experimental flow visualization. The flow is an example of a liquid film coating process, and consists of two counter-rotating rolls placed side-by-side and half-submerged in a bath of fluid. In the gap between the rolls a recirculation zone exists just below the free surface, around which the flow splits into two films. Fluid recirculating for long periods has been identified as a source of coating defects, so this paper considers a possible method of inducing stirring. The flow is modulated by driving one of the rolls through a Hooke's joint, which delivers a well-characterized periodic perturbation to the roll speed. In response to this speed modulation, the free surface undergoes a periodic change in position and shape which drives an exchange of fluid between the recirculation region and the surrounding flow. The amplitude of the free-surface motion is strongly dependent on modulation frequency. The dynamics of the free surface preclude a quasi-steady approach, even in the small-frequency limit, and so a fully time-dependent analysis based on the finite element method is employed. Trigonometric temporal interpolation of the finite element data is used to make passive tracer advection calculations more efficient, and excellent agreement is seen between simulation and experiment. Computations of the stable and unstable invariant manifolds associated with periodic points on the free surface reveal that the exchange of fluid is governed by a self-intersecting turnstile mechanism, by which most fluid entrained during a modulation cycle is ejected later in the same cycle. Transport over several cycles is explored by observation of the evacuation of passive tracers initially distributed uniformly in the recirculation zone. Results demonstrate the persistence of unmixed cores whose size is dependent on the modulation frequency. By considering the percentage of tracers remaining after a fixed number of cycles, contours in frequency-amplitude space show that for each modulation amplitude there is a frequency which produces the most effective transport, with up to 80 % of tracers removed by a modulation which produces only a 5 % change in film thickness. Finally it is shown how modulation of both rolls at slightly different phases can reduce the film thickness variation to about 1 % while maintaining the level of transport
