    Client-side mobile user profile for content management using data mining techniques

    Mobile device can be used as a medium to send and receive the mobile internet content. However, there are several limitations using mobile internet. Content personalisation has been viewed as an important area when using mobile internet. In order for personalisation to be successful, understanding the user is important. In this paper, we explore the implementation of the user profile at client-side, which may be used whenever user connect to the mobile content provider. The client-side user profile can help to free the provider in performing analysis by using data mining technique at the mobile device. This research investigates the conceptual idea of using clustering and classification of user profile at the client-site mobile. In this paper, we applied K-means and compared several other classification algorithms like TwoStep, Kohenen and Anomaly to determine the boundaries of the important factors using information ranking separation

    Personalised trails and learner profiling within e-learning environments

    This deliverable focuses on personalisation and personalised trails. We begin by introducing and defining the concepts of personalisation and personalised trails. Personalisation requires that a user profile be stored, and so we assess currently available standard profile schemas and discuss the requirements for a profile to support personalised learning. We then review techniques for providing personalisation and some systems that implement these techniques, and discuss some of the issues around evaluating personalisation systems. We look especially at the use of learning and cognitive styles to support personalised learning, and also consider personalisation in the field of mobile learning, which has a slightly different take on the subject, and in commercially available systems, where personalisation support is found to currently be only at quite a low level. We conclude with a summary of the lessons to be learned from our review of personalisation and personalised trails

    Knowing how consumers navigate online shopping web sites enables retailers to not only better design their sites for navigation but also place buying recommendations at strategic points and personalise the flow of content. Frequent navigation paths can be derived from browsing histories or clickstreams with sequence-oriented data mining techniques. In this working paper, we highlight, with examples, the relevance of frequent navigation paths to online shopping behaviour research and review some relevant data mining techniques

    Mining usage data for adaptive personalisation of smartphone based help-on-demand services

The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.Mobile computing devices and their applications that encompass context aware components are becoming increasingly more prevalent. The context-awareness of these types of applications typically focuses on the services offered. In this paper we describe a framework that supports the monitoring and analysis of mobile application usage patterns with the goal of updating user models for adaptive services and user interface personalisation. This paper focuses on two aspects of the framework. The first is the modelling and storage of the usage data. The second focuses on the data mining component of the framework, outlining the five different capabilities of the adaptation in addition to the algorithms used. The proposed framework has been evaluated through specific case studies, with the results attained demonstrating the effectiveness of the data mining capabilities and in particular the adaptation of the User Interface. The accuracy and efficiency of the algorithms used are also evaluated with three users. The results of the evaluation show that the aims of the data mining component were achieved with the personalisation and adaptation of content and user interface, respectively

    State of the art of learning styles-based adaptive educational hypermedia systems (Ls-Baehss)

    The notion that learning can be enhanced when a teaching approach matches a learner’s learning style has been widely accepted in classroom settings since the latter represents a predictor of student’s attitude and preferences. As such, the traditional approach of ‘one-size-fits-all’ as may be applied to teaching delivery in Educational Hypermedia Systems (EHSs) has to be changed with an approach that responds to users’ needs by exploiting their individual differences. However, establishing and implementing reliable approaches for matching the teaching delivery and modalities to learning styles still represents an innovation challenge which has to be tackled. In this paper, seventy six studies are objectively analysed for several goals. In order to reveal the value of integrating learning styles in EHSs, different perspectives in this context are discussed. Identifying the most effective learning style models as incorporated within AEHSs. Investigating the effectiveness of different approaches for modelling students’ individual learning traits is another goal of this study. Thus, the paper highlights a number of theoretical and technical issues of LS-BAEHSs to serve as a comprehensive guidance for researchers who interest in this area

    Personalised online sales using web usage data mining

    Practically every major company with a retail operation has its own web site and online sales facilities. This paper describes a toolset that exploits web usage data mining techniques to identify customer Internet browsing patterns. These patterns are then used to underpin a personalised product recommendation system for online sales. Within the architecture, a Kohonen neural network or self-organizing map (SOM) has been trained for use both offline, to discover user group profiles, and in real-time to examine active user click stream data, make a match to a specific user group, and recommend a unique set of product browsing options appropriate to an individual user. Our work demonstrates that this approach can overcome the scalability problem that is common among these types of system. Our results also show that a personalised recommender system powered by the SOM predictive model is able to produce consistent recommendations

    Panorama of Recommender Systems to Support Learning

    This chapter presents an analysis of recommender systems in TechnologyEnhanced Learning along their 15 years existence (2000-2014). All recommender systems considered for the review aim to support educational stakeholders by personalising the learning process. In this meta-review 82 recommender systems from 35 different countries have been investigated and categorised according to a given classification framework. The reviewed systems have been classified into 7 clusters according to their characteristics and analysed for their contribution to the evolution of the RecSysTEL research field.
