    i-JEN: Visual interactive Malaysia crime news retrieval system

    Supporting crime news investigation involves a mechanism to help monitor the current and past status of criminal events. We believe this could be well facilitated by focusing on the user interfaces and the event crime model aspects. In this paper we discuss on a development of Visual Interactive Malaysia Crime News Retrieval System (i-JEN) and describe the approach, user studies and planned, the system architecture and future plan. Our main objectives are to construct crime-based event; investigate the use of crime-based event in improving the classification and clustering; develop an interactive crime news retrieval system; visualize crime news in an effective and interactive way; integrate them into a usable and robust system and evaluate the usability and system performance. The system will serve as a news monitoring system which aims to automatically organize, retrieve and present the crime news in such a way as to support an effective monitoring, searching, and browsing for the target users groups of general public, news analysts and policemen or crime investigators. The study will contribute to the better understanding of the crime data consumption in the Malaysian context as well as the developed system with the visualisation features to address crime data and the eventual goal of combating the crimes

    NITELIGHT: A Graphical Tool for Semantic Query Construction

    Query formulation is a key aspect of information retrieval, contributing to both the efficiency and usability of many semantic applications. A number of query languages, such as SPARQL, have been developed for the Semantic Web; however, there are, as yet, few tools to support end users with respect to the creation and editing of semantic queries. In this paper we introduce a graphical tool for semantic query construction (NITELIGHT) that is based on the SPARQL query language specification. The tool supports end users by providing a set of graphical notations that represent semantic query language constructs. This language provides a visual query language counterpart to SPARQL that we call vSPARQL. NITELIGHT also provides an interactive graphical editing environment that combines ontology navigation capabilities with graphical query visualization techniques. This paper describes the functionality and user interaction features of the NITELIGHT tool based on our work to date. We also present details of the vSPARQL constructs used to support the graphical representation of SPARQL queries

    Conversation provides an excellent means of communication for almost all people. Consequently, a conversational interface is an excellent mechanism for allowing people to interact with systems. Conversational systems are an active research area, but a wide range of systems can be developed with current technology. More sophisticated interfaces can take considerable effort, but simple interfaces can be developed quite rapidly. This paper gives an introduction to the current state of the art of conversational systems and interfaces. It describes a methodology for developing conversational interfaces and gives an example of an interface for a state benefits web site. The paper discusses how this interface could improve access for a wide range of people, and how further development of this interface would allow a larger range of people to use the system and give them more functionality

    EGO: a personalised multimedia management tool

    The problems of Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) sys- tems can be attributed to the semantic gap between the low-level data representation and the high-level concepts the user associates with images, on the one hand, and the time-varying and often vague nature of the underlying information need, on the other. These problems can be addressed by improving the interaction between the user and the system. In this paper, we sketch the development of CBIR interfaces, and introduce our view on how to solve some of the problems of the studied interfaces. To address the semantic gap and long-term multifaceted information needs, we propose a "retrieval in context" system. EGO is a tool for the management of image collections, supporting the user through personalisation and adaptation. We will describe how it learns from the user's personal organisation, allowing it to recommend relevant images to the user. The recommendation algorithm is detailed, which is based on relevance feedback techniques

    Interactive visual data query & exploration : techniques for visual data analytics through visual query modelling and multidimensional data interaction

Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology.The direct data manipulation through visualization and associated navigation techniques has been implemented for many years. However, these methods are not uniformly discussed in the context of user interface design. During the history of user interface development, the interaction between humans and computers is almost to be done through software widgets. Since in the last decade, many advanced data visualization and interaction techniques have been developed, now it is the time to bring them into the formal discussion about the context of user interface design, data queries, and data manipulation. The dissertation attempts to fulfill the gap between visual user interface design and interactive data visualization. In relational data queries, many visualization techniques have featured advanced interactive operation; however, a majority of those would concentrate on the traditional style, instead of a modern approach. This is the reason why today in visual analytics truly direct manipulation is highly encouraged, instead of the conventional methods. This dissertation focuses on the investigation of modern data query approaches. It attempts to model the new data query methods that apply those advanced visualization and interaction techniques to facilitate the data analysis procedures. The second contribution of the dissertation is the design of new interaction methods for multi-dimensional data visualization. We first introduce a new framework which includes straightforward manipulation techniques for relational data discovery. These novel techniques, named MCquery, SumUp, and FigAxis, are exclusively developed for the key characteristics of relational data such as data models and data dimensions. The core methodology is about interactive visual query design based upon node-link graphics, parallel coordinate geometries, and scatterplot visualization, where the direct interaction is performed by friendly action such as clicks and brushes. The tools materialized from these techniques can help to reduce usersā€™ cognitive and behavioral effort efficiently in dealing with the issues of information search-retrieval, quantitative data analysis, and correlation examination
