Face recognition technologies for evidential evaluation of video traces

Human recognition from video traces is an important task in forensic investigations and evidence evaluations. Compared with other biometric traits, face is one of the most popularly used modalities for human recognition due to the fact that its collection is non-intrusive and requires less cooperation from the subjects. Moreover, face images taken at a long distance can still provide reasonable resolution, while most biometric modalities, such as iris and fingerprint, do not have this merit. In this chapter, we discuss automatic face recognition technologies for evidential evaluations of video traces. We first introduce the general concepts in both forensic and automatic face recognition , then analyse the difficulties in face recognition from videos . We summarise and categorise the approaches for handling different uncontrollable factors in difficult recognition conditions. Finally we discuss some challenges and trends in face recognition research in both forensics and biometrics . Given its merits tested in many deployed systems and great potential in other emerging applications, considerable research and development efforts are expected to be devoted in face recognition in the near future

A New Way for Face Sketch Construction and Detection Using Deep CNN

Traditional hand-drawn face sketches have encountered speed and accuracy issues in the field of forensic science when used in conjunction with contemporary criminal identification technologies. To close this gap, we provide a ground-breaking research article that is built on a stand-alone program that aims to revolutionize the production and identification of composite face sketches. This ground-breaking approach does away with the requirement for forensic artists by enabling users to easily create composite sketches using a drag-and-drop interface. Utilizing the power of deep learning and cloud infrastructure, these generated sketches are seamlessly cross-referenced against an enormous police database to identify suspects quickly and precisely. Our research study offers a dual-pronged approach to combating the rise in criminal activity while using the quick breakthroughs in artificial intelligence. First, we demonstrate how a specific Deep Convolutional Neural Network model transforms sketches of faces into photorealistic photographs. Second, we employ transfer learning for precise suspect identification using the pre-trained VGG-Face model. Utilizing Convolutional Neural Networks, which are famous for their data processing powers and hierarchical feature extraction, is a key component of our strategy. This approach exceeds current methods and boasts an extraordinary average accuracy of 0.98 in identifying people from sketches, providing a crucial tool for strengthening and speeding up forensic investigations. A unique Convolutional Neural Network framework that demonstrates significant improvements over state-of-the-art techniques is also revealed as we dive into the challenging task of matching composite sketches with corresponding digital photos. Our thorough analysis shows the framework to be remarkably accurate, constituting a substantial advance in the field of forensic face sketch production and recognition

This research provides a strategy for enhancing the precision of face sketch identification through adversarial sketch-photo transformation. The approach uses a generative adversarial network (GAN) to learn to convert sketches into photographs, which may subsequently be utilized to enhance the precision of face sketch identification. The suggested method is evaluated in comparison to state-of-the-art face sketch recognition and synthesis techniques, such as sketchy GAN, similarity-preserving GAN (SPGAN), and super-resolution GAN (SRGAN). Possible domains of use for the proposed adversarial sketch-photo transformation approach include law enforcement, where reliable face sketch recognition is essential for the identification of suspects. The suggested approach can be generalized to various contexts, such as the creation of creative photographs from drawings or the conversion of pictures between modalities. The suggested method outperforms state-of-the-art face sketch recognition and synthesis techniques, confirming the usefulness of adversarial learning in this context. Our method is highly efficient for photo-sketch synthesis, with a structural similarity index (SSIM) of 0.65 on The Chinese University of Hong Kong dataset and 0.70 on the custom-generated dataset

This paper explored the contemporary affirmation of the recent literature in the context of face recognition systems, a review motivated by contradictory claims in the literature. This paper shows how the relative performance of recent claims based on methodologies such as PCA and ICA, which are depend on the task statement. It then explores the space of each model acclaimed in recent literature. In the process, this paper verifies the results of many of the face recognition models in the literature, and relates them to each other and to this work
