    Advances in vision-based lane detection: algorithms, integration, assessment, and perspectives on ACP-based parallel vision

    Lane detection is a fundamental aspect of most current advanced driver assistance systems (ADASs). A large number of existing results focus on the study of vision-based lane detection methods due to the extensive knowledge background and the low-cost of camera devices. In this paper, previous vision-based lane detection studies are reviewed in terms of three aspects, which are lane detection algorithms, integration, and evaluation methods. Next, considering the inevitable limitations that exist in the camera-based lane detection system, the system integration methodologies for constructing more robust detection systems are reviewed and analyzed. The integration methods are further divided into three levels, namely, algorithm, system, and sensor. Algorithm level combines different lane detection algorithms while system level integrates other object detection systems to comprehensively detect lane positions. Sensor level uses multi-modal sensors to build a robust lane recognition system. In view of the complexity of evaluating the detection system, and the lack of common evaluation procedure and uniform metrics in past studies, the existing evaluation methods and metrics are analyzed and classified to propose a better evaluation of the lane detection system. Next, a comparison of representative studies is performed. Finally, a discussion on the limitations of current lane detection systems and the future developing trends toward an Artificial Society, Computational experiment-based parallel lane detection framework is proposed

    Machine learning approaches to video activity recognition: from computer vision to signal processing

    244 p.La investigación presentada se centra en técnicas de clasificación para dos tareas diferentes, aunque relacionadas, de tal forma que la segunda puede ser considerada parte de la primera: el reconocimiento de acciones humanas en vídeos y el reconocimiento de lengua de signos.En la primera parte, la hipótesis de partida es que la transformación de las señales de un vídeo mediante el algoritmo de Patrones Espaciales Comunes (CSP por sus siglas en inglés, comúnmente utilizado en sistemas de Electroencefalografía) puede dar lugar a nuevas características que serán útiles para la posterior clasificación de los vídeos mediante clasificadores supervisados. Se han realizado diferentes experimentos en varias bases de datos, incluyendo una creada durante esta investigación desde el punto de vista de un robot humanoide, con la intención de implementar el sistema de reconocimiento desarrollado para mejorar la interacción humano-robot.En la segunda parte, las técnicas desarrolladas anteriormente se han aplicado al reconocimiento de lengua de signos, pero además de ello se propone un método basado en la descomposición de los signos para realizar el reconocimiento de los mismos, añadiendo la posibilidad de una mejor explicabilidad. El objetivo final es desarrollar un tutor de lengua de signos capaz de guiar a los usuarios en el proceso de aprendizaje, dándoles a conocer los errores que cometen y el motivo de dichos errores

Video sensors backed by computer vision algorithms are a natural way to gather this data. Unfortunately, key technical issues persist in extracting features and models that are simultaneously efficient to compute and robust to issues such as adverse lighting conditions, distracting background motions, appearance changes over time, and occlusions. In this thesis, we present a set of techniques and model enhancements to better handle these problems, focusing on contributions in four areas. First, we improve background subtraction so it can better handle temporally irregular dynamic textures. This allows us to achieve a 5.5% drop in false positive rate on the Wallflower waving trees video. Secondly, we adapt the Dalal and Triggs Histogram of Oriented Gradients pedestrian detector to work on large-scale scenes with dense crowds and harsh lighting conditions: challenges which prevent us from easily using a background subtraction solution. These scenes contain hundreds of simultaneously visible people. To make using the algorithm computationally feasible, we have produced a novel implementation that runs on commodity graphics hardware and is up to 76 faster than our CPU-only implementation. We demonstrate the utility of this detector by modeling scene-level activities with a Hierarchical Dirichlet Process.(cont.) Third, we show how one can improve the quality of pedestrian silhouettes for recognizing individual people. We combine general appearance information from a large population of pedestrians with semi-periodic shape information from individual silhouette sequences. Finally, we show how one can combine a variety of detection and tracking techniques to robustly handle a variety of event detection scenarios such as theft and left-luggage detection.     Modeling Particle-Laden Compressible Flows with an Application to Plume-Surface Interactions

    During planetary descent, rocket plumes fluidize and eject surface granular matter. Consequently, ejected matter has been shown to obscure the landing site and even collide with the lander, causing serious damage. Given the high risk and cost of space exploration, the challenges associated with plume-surface interactions (PSI) are capable of jeopardizing future missions. The erosion, fluidization, and ejecta of granular matter during PSI occurs under transonic/supersonic, high Reynolds number conditions. These flow conditions pose significant challenges in both experimental and numerical analyses. To date, accurate and predictive physics-based models of PSI at relevant landing conditions do not exist. The objective of this project is to develop high-fidelity simulation capabilities to model compressible gas-particle flows at conditions relevant to PSI. To start, a rigorous derivation of the volume-filtered (locally averaged) compressible Navier--Stokes equations is presented for the first time. This derivation reveals many unclosed terms, for which models are either non-existent or not valid under the regimes of interest. To this end, key terms including pseudo-turbulent kinetic energy and pseudo-turbulent Reynolds stresses, are isolated and modeled via a transport equation in a new high-order finite difference Eulerian-Lagrangian framework. A new immersed boundary method is introduced to generate highly resolved, multi-particle simulations for model closure development. Using the proposed immersed boundary method and the Eulerian--Lagrangian framework, high-fidelity PSI simulations are performed. Single-phase jet impingement on flat surfaces is first shown for validation of the flow conditions. The work is then extended to PSI over a granular bed. For this case, it is shown that that ejected particles can exceed sonic speeds at high particle Reynolds numbers while the majority of the granular bed experiences subsonic particle Mach numbers. In addition, granular temperature is found to be most prevalent in region of high shear during crater formation. The uniqueness of this work lies in the combination of first principles physics and numerics to generate a modeling framework to improve predictions of plume-surface interactions for future missions involving entry, descent, and landing on planetary and satellite bodies.PHDMechanical EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.     Selected Problems of High-Resolution Automotive Imaging Radar

    This thesis aims at two selected problems in the development of high-resolution au- tomotive imaging radar: 1) The feasibility of using sub-THz for the next generation of automotive radar; 2) The development of the physics-based image segmentation approach on the automotive radar imagery. The wide range of feasibility studies on the use of sub-THz frequencies for auto- motive radar have been undertaken in the Microwave Integrated Systems Laboratory (MISL) at the University of Birmingham, and the candidate is in charge of the included study on the theoretical modelling and experimental verification of the attenuation through the vehicle infrastructures which is the first part of this thesis. The importance of this work is related to the fact that automotive radar is placed within the car infras- tructure. Therefore, it would be a potential show-stopper in the development of this innovation if attenuation within the car bumper or badge is prohibitively high. Both theoretical modelling and experimental measurement are conducted by considering the impact factors on the propagation properties of the sub-THz signal such as the incident angle, frequency, characteristic parameters of materials, and the thicknesses of infrastructure layers. The transmissivity of multilayered structure has been modelled and good agreement with the results of measurements was demonstrated, so that the developed approach can be used in further studies on propagation through car infrastruc- ture. The published results on transmissivity and complex permittivity of automotive paints are valuable for researchers in either field of THz technology or automotive radar. The image segmentation on automotive radar maps aims at identifying the passable and impassable areas for path planning in autonomous driving. Contrary to traditional radar, radar clutter is regarded as the physical meaningful information, which can deliver valuable feature information for surface characterization, and enable the full scene reconstruction of automotive radar maps. The proposed novel segmentation algorithm is a hybrid method composed of pre-segmentation based on image processing methods, and the region classification using the multivariate Gaussian distribution (MGD) classifier developed based on the statistical distribution feature parameters of radar returns of various areas. Moving target indication (MTI) is implemented for the first time based on frame-to-frame context association. The end-to-end segmentation framework is therefore achieved robustly with good segmentation performance, and automatically without human intervention

    Human Body Scattering Effects at Millimeter Waves Frequencies for Future 5G Systems and Beyond

    [ES] Se espera que las futuras comunicaciones móviles experimenten una revolución técnica que vaya más allá de las velocidades de datos de Gbps y reduzca las latencias de las velocidades de datos a niveles muy cercanos al milisegundo. Se han investigado nuevas tecnologías habilitadoras para lograr estas exigentes especificaciones. Y la utilización de las bandas de ondas milimétricas, donde hay mucho espectro disponible, es una de ellas. Debido a las numerosas dificultades técnicas asociadas a la utilización de esta banda de frecuencias, se necesitan complicados modelos de canal para anticipar las características del canal de radio y evaluar con precisión el rendimiento de los sistemas celulares en milimétricas. En concreto, los modelos de propagación más precisos son los basados en técnicas de trazado de rayos deterministas. Pero estas técnicas tienen el estigma de ser computacionalmente exigentes, y esto dificulta su uso para caracterizar el canal de radio en escenarios interiores complejos y dinámicos. La complejidad de la caracterización de estos escenarios depende en gran medida de la interacción del cuerpo humano con el entorno radioeléctrico, que en las ondas milimétricas suele ser destructiva y muy impredecible. Por otro lado, en los últimos años, la industria de los videojuegos ha desarrollado potentes herramientas para entornos hiperrealistas, donde la mayor parte de los avances en esta emulación de la realidad tienen que ver con el manejo de la luz. Así, los motores gráficos de estas plataformas se han vuelto cada vez más eficientes para manejar grandes volúmenes de información, por lo que son ideales para emular el comportamiento de la propagación de las ondas de radio, así como para reconstruir un escenario interior complejo. Por ello, en esta Tesis se ha aprovechado la capacidad computacional de este tipo de herramientas para evaluar el canal radioeléctrico milimétricas de la forma más eficiente posible. Esta Tesis ofrece unas pautas para optimizar la propagación de la señal en milimétricas en un entorno interior dinámico y complejo, para lo cual se proponen tres objetivos principales. El primer objetivo es evaluar los efectos de dispersión del cuerpo humano cuando interactúa con el canal de propagación. Una vez evaluado, se propuso un modelo matemático y geométrico simplificado para calcular este efecto de forma fiable y rápida. Otro objetivo fue el diseño de un reflector pasivo modular en milimétricas, que optimiza la cobertura en entornos de interior, evitando la interferencia del ser humano en la propagación. Y, por último, se diseñó un sistema de apuntamiento del haz predictivo en tiempo real, para que opere con el sistema de radiación en milimétricas, cuyo objetivo es evitar las pérdidas de propagación causadas por el cuerpo humano en entornos interiores dinámicos y complejos.[CA] S'espera que les futures comunicacions mòbils experimenten una revolució tècnica que vaja més enllà de les velocitats de dades de Gbps i reduïsca les latències de les velocitats de dades a nivells molt pròxims al milisegundo. En concret, els models de propagació més precisos són els basats en tècniques de traçat de rajos deterministes. Però estes tècniques tenen l'estigma de ser computacionalment exigents, i açò dificulta el seu ús per a caracteritzar el canal de ràdio en escenaris interiors complexos i dinàmics. La complexitat de la caracterització d'estos escenaris depén en gran manera de la interacció del cos humà amb l'entorn radioelèctric, que en les ones millimètriques sol ser destructiva i molt impredicible. D'altra banda, en els últims anys, la indústria dels videojocs ha desenrotllat potents ferramentes per a entorns hiperrealistes, on la major part dels avanços en esta emulació de la realitat tenen a veure amb el maneig de la llum. Així, els motors gràfics d'estes plataformes s'han tornat cada vegada més eficients per a manejar grans volums d'informació, per la qual cosa són ideals per a emular el comportament de la propagació de les ones de ràdio, així com per a reconstruir un escenari interior complex. Per això, en esta Tesi s'ha aprofitat la capacitat computacional d'este tipus de ferramentes per a avaluar el canal radioelèctric millimètriques de la manera més eficient possible. Esta Tesi oferix unes pautes per a optimitzar la propagació del senyal en millimètriques en un entorn interior dinàmic i complex, per a la qual cosa es proposen tres objectius principals. El primer objectiu és avaluar els efectes de dispersió del cos humà quan interactua amb el canal de propagació. Una vegada avaluat, es va proposar un model matemàtic i geomètric simplificat per a calcular este efecte de forma fiable i ràpida. Un altre objectiu va ser el disseny d'un reflector passiu modular en millimètriques, que optimitza la cobertura en entorns d'interior, evitant la interferència del ser humà en la propagació, per a així evitar pèrdues de propagació addicionals. I, finalment, es va dissenyar un sistema d'apuntament del feix predictiu en temps real, perquè opere amb el sistema de radiació en millimètriques, l'objectiu del qual és evitar les pèrdues de propagació causades pel cos humà en entorns interiors dinàmics i complexos.[EN] Future mobile communications are expected to experience a technical revolution that goes beyond Gbps data rates and reduces data rate latencies to levels very close to a millisecond. New enabling technologies have been researched to achieve these demanding specifications. The utilization of mmWave bands, where a lot of spectrum is available, is one of them. Due to the numerous technical difficulties associated with using this frequency band, complicated channel models are necessary to anticipate the radio channel characteristics and to accurately evaluate the performance of cellular systems in mmWave. In particular, the most accurate propagation models are those based on deterministic ray tracing techniques. But these techniques have the stigma of being computationally intensive, and this makes it difficult to use them to characterize the radio channel in complex and dynamic indoor scenarios. The complexity of characterizing these scenarios depends largely on the interaction of the human body with the radio environment, which at mmWaves is often destructive and highly unpredictable. On the other hand, in recent years, the video game industry has developed powerful tools for hyper-realistic environments, where most of the progress in this reality emulation has to do with the handling of light. Therefore, the graphic engines of these platforms have become more and more efficient to handle large volumes of information, becoming ideal to emulate the radio wave propagation behavior, as well as to reconstruct a complex interior scenario. Therefore, in this Thesis one has taken advantage of the computational capacity of this type of tools to evaluate the mmWave radio channel in the most efficient way possible. This Thesis offers some guidelines to optimize the signal propagation in mmWaves in a dynamic and complex indoor environment, for which three main objectives are proposed. The first objective has been to evaluate the scattering effects of the human body when it interacts with the propagation channel. Once evaluated, a simplified mathematical and geometrical model has been proposed to calculate this effect in a reliable and fast way. Another objective has been the design of a modular passive reflector in mmWaves, which optimizes the coverage in indoor environments, avoiding human interference in the propagation, in order to avoid its harmful scattering effects. And finally, a real-time predictive beam steering system has been designed for the mmWaves radiation system, in order to avoid propagation losses caused by the human body in dynamic and complex indoor environments.Romero Peña, JS.
