    Towards Active Event Recognition

    Directing robot attention to recognise activities and to anticipate events like goal-directed actions is a crucial skill for human-robot interaction. Unfortunately, issues like intrinsic time constraints, the spatially distributed nature of the entailed information sources, and the existence of a multitude of unobservable states affecting the system, like latent intentions, have long rendered achievement of such skills a rather elusive goal. The problem tests the limits of current attention control systems. It requires an integrated solution for tracking, exploration and recognition, which traditionally have been seen as separate problems in active vision.We propose a probabilistic generative framework based on a mixture of Kalman filters and information gain maximisation that uses predictions in both recognition and attention-control. This framework can efficiently use the observations of one element in a dynamic environment to provide information on other elements, and consequently enables guided exploration.Interestingly, the sensors-control policy, directly derived from first principles, represents the intuitive trade-off between finding the most discriminative clues and maintaining overall awareness.Experiments on a simulated humanoid robot observing a human executing goal-oriented actions demonstrated improvement on recognition time and precision over baseline systems

    A sparsity-driven approach to multi-camera tracking in visual sensor networks

    In this paper, a sparsity-driven approach is presented for multi-camera tracking in visual sensor networks (VSNs). VSNs consist of image sensors, embedded processors and wireless transceivers which are powered by batteries. Since the energy and bandwidth resources are limited, setting up a tracking system in VSNs is a challenging problem. Motivated by the goal of tracking in a bandwidth-constrained environment, we present a sparsity-driven method to compress the features extracted by the camera nodes, which are then transmitted across the network for distributed inference. We have designed special overcomplete dictionaries that match the structure of the features, leading to very parsimonious yet accurate representations. We have tested our method in indoor and outdoor people tracking scenarios. Our experimental results demonstrate how our approach leads to communication savings without significant loss in tracking performance

    Tracing commodities in indoor environments for service robotics

    Daily life assistance for elderly people is one of the most promising scenarios for service robots in the the near future. In particular, the go-and-fetch task will be one of the most demanding tasks in these cases. In this paper, we present an informationally structured room that supports a service robot in the task of daily object fetching. Our environment contains different distributed sensors including a floor sensing system and several intelligent cabinets. Sensor information is send to a centralized management system which process the data and make it available to a service robot which is assisting people in the room. We additionally present the first steps of an intelligent framework used to maintain information about locations of commodities in our informationally structured room. This information will be used by the service robot to find objects under people requests. One of the main goal of our intelligent environment is to maintain a small number of sensors to avoid interfering with the daily activity of people, and to reduce as much as possible invasion of their privacy. In order to compensate this limited available sensor information, our framework aims to exploit knowledge about people's activity and interaction with objects, to infer reliable information about the location of commodities. This paper presents simulated results that demonstrate the suitability of this framework to be applied to a service robotic environment equipped with limited sensors.     Sensing and mapping for interactive performance

    This paper describes a trans-domain mapping (TDM) framework for translating meaningful activities from one creative domain onto another. The multi-disciplinary framework is designed to facilitate an intuitive and non-intrusive interactive multimedia performance interface that offers the users or performers real-time control of multimedia events using their physical movements. It is intended to be a highly dynamic real-time performance tool, sensing and tracking activities and changes, in order to provide interactive multimedia performances. From a straightforward definition of the TDM framework, this paper reports several implementations and multi-disciplinary collaborative projects using the proposed framework, including a motion and colour-sensitive system, a sensor-based system for triggering musical events, and a distributed multimedia server for audio mapping of a real-time face tracker, and discusses different aspects of mapping strategies in their context. Plausible future directions, developments and exploration with the proposed framework, including stage augmenta tion, virtual and augmented reality, which involve sensing and mapping of physical and non-physical changes onto multimedia control events, are discussed

    People tracking and re-identification by face recognition for RGB-D camera networks

    This paper describes a face recognition-based people tracking and re-identification system for RGB-D camera networks. The system tracks people and learns their faces online to keep track of their identities even if they move out from the camera's field of view once. For robust people re-identification, the system exploits the combination of a deep neural network- based face representation and a Bayesian inference-based face classification method. The system also provides a predefined people identification capability: it associates the online learned faces with predefined people face images and names to know the people's whereabouts, thus, allowing a rich human-system interaction. Through experiments, we validate the re-identification and the predefined people identification capabilities of the system and show an example of the integration of the system with a mobile robot. The overall system is built as a Robot Operating System (ROS) module. As a result, it simplifies the integration with the many existing robotic systems and algorithms which use such middleware. The code of this work has been released as open-source in order to provide a baseline for the future publications in this field

    COORDINATION OF LEADER-FOLLOWER MULTI-AGENT SYSTEM WITH TIME-VARYING OBJECTIVE FUNCTION

    This thesis aims to introduce a new framework for the distributed control of multi-agent systems with adjustable swarm control objectives. Our goal is twofold: 1) to provide an overview to how time-varying objectives in the control of autonomous systems may be applied to the distributed control of multi-agent systems with variable autonomy level, and 2) to introduce a framework to incorporate the proposed concept to fundamental swarm behaviors such as aggregation and leader tracking. Leader-follower multi-agent systems are considered in this study, and a general form of time-dependent artificial potential function is proposed to describe the varying objectives of the system in the case of complete information exchange. Using Lyapunov methods, the stability and boundedness of the agents\u27 trajectories under single order and higher order dynamics are analyzed. Illustrative numerical simulations are presented to demonstrate the validity of our results. Then, we extend these results for multi-agent systems with limited information exchange and switching communication topology. The first steps of the realization of an experimental framework have been made with the ultimate goal of verifying the simulation results in practice
