Surveying human habit modeling and mining techniques in smart spaces
A smart space is an environment, mainly equipped with Internet-of-Things (IoT) technologies, able to provide services to humans, helping them to perform daily tasks by monitoring the space and autonomously executing actions, giving suggestions and sending alarms. Approaches suggested in the literature may differ in terms of required facilities, possible applications, amount of human intervention required, ability to support multiple users at the same time adapting to changing needs. In this paper, we propose a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) that classifies most influential approaches in the area of smart spaces according to a set of dimensions identified by answering a set of research questions. These dimensions allow to choose a specific method or approach according to available sensors, amount of labeled data, need for visual analysis, requirements in terms of enactment and decision-making on the environment. Additionally, the paper identifies a set of challenges to be addressed by future research in the field
CompILE: Compositional Imitation Learning and Execution
We introduce Compositional Imitation Learning and Execution (CompILE): a
framework for learning reusable, variable-length segments of
hierarchically-structured behavior from demonstration data. CompILE uses a
novel unsupervised, fully-differentiable sequence segmentation module to learn
latent encodings of sequential data that can be re-composed and executed to
perform new tasks. Once trained, our model generalizes to sequences of longer
length and from environment instances not seen during training. We evaluate
CompILE in a challenging 2D multi-task environment and a continuous control
task, and show that it can find correct task boundaries and event encodings in
an unsupervised manner. Latent codes and associated behavior policies
discovered by CompILE can be used by a hierarchical agent, where the high-level
policy selects actions in the latent code space, and the low-level,
task-specific policies are simply the learned decoders. We found that our
CompILE-based agent could learn given only sparse rewards, where agents without
task-specific policies struggle.Comment: ICML (2019
Trajectory-based differential expression analysis for single-cell sequencing data
Trajectory inference has radically enhanced single-cell RNA-seq research by enabling the study of dynamic changes in gene expression. Downstream of trajectory inference, it is vital to discover genes that are (i) associated with the lineages in the trajectory, or (ii) differentially expressed between lineages, to illuminate the underlying biological processes. Current data analysis procedures, however, either fail to exploit the continuous resolution provided by trajectory inference, or fail to pinpoint the exact types of differential expression. We introduce tradeSeq, a powerful generalized additive model framework based on the negative binomial distribution that allows flexible inference of both within-lineage and between-lineage differential expression. By incorporating observation-level weights, the model additionally allows to account for zero inflation. We evaluate the method on simulated datasets and on real datasets from droplet-based and full-length protocols, and show that it yields biological insights through a clear interpretation of the data. Downstream of trajectory inference for cell lineages based on scRNA-seq data, differential expression analysis yields insight into biological processes.
