What to Fix? Distinguishing between design and non-design rules in automated tools
Technical debt---design shortcuts taken to optimize for delivery speed---is a
critical part of long-term software costs. Consequently, automatically
detecting technical debt is a high priority for software practitioners.
Software quality tool vendors have responded to this need by positioning their
tools to detect and manage technical debt. While these tools bundle a number of
rules, it is hard for users to understand which rules identify design issues,
as opposed to syntactic quality. This is important, since previous studies have
revealed the most significant technical debt is related to design issues. Other
research has focused on comparing these tools on open source projects, but
these comparisons have not looked at whether the rules were relevant to design.
We conducted an empirical study using a structured categorization approach, and
manually classify 466 software quality rules from three industry tools---CAST,
SonarQube, and NDepend. We found that most of these rules were easily labeled
as either not design (55%) or design (19%). The remainder (26%) resulted in
disagreements among the labelers. Our results are a first step in formalizing a

Cloud computing services: taxonomy and comparison
Cloud computing is a highly discussed topic in the technical and economic world, and many of the big players of the software industry have entered the development of cloud services. Several companies what to explore the possibilities and benefits of incorporating such cloud computing services in their business, as well as the possibilities to offer own cloud services. However, with the amount of cloud computing services increasing quickly, the need for a taxonomy framework rises. This paper examines the available cloud computing services and identifies and explains their main characteristics. Next, this paper organizes these characteristics and proposes a tree-structured taxonomy. This taxonomy allows quick classifications of the different cloud computing services and makes it easier to compare them. Based on existing taxonomies, this taxonomy provides more detailed characteristics and hierarchies. Additionally, the taxonomy offers a common terminology and baseline information for easy communication. Finally, the taxonomy is explained and verified using existing cloud services as examples

Automated post-fault diagnosis of power system disturbances
In order to automate the analysis of SCADA and digital fault recorder (DFR) data for a transmission network operator in the UK, the authors have developed an industrial strength multi-agent system entitled protection engineering diagnostic agents (PEDA). The PEDA system integrates a number of legacy intelligent systems for analyzing power system data as autonomous intelligent agents. The integration achieved through multi-agent systems technology enhances the diagnostic support offered to engineers by focusing the analysis on the most pertinent DFR data based on the results of the analysis of SCADA. Since November 2004 the PEDA system has been operating online at a UK utility. In this paper the authors focus on the underlying intelligent system techniques, i.e. rule-based expert systems, model-based reasoning and state-of-the-art multi-agent system technology, that PEDA employs and the lessons learnt through its deployment and online use
A Survey on Economic-driven Evaluations of Information Technology
The economic-driven evaluation of information technology (IT) has become an important instrument in the management of IT projects. Numerous approaches have been developed to quantify the costs of an IT investment and its assumed profit, to evaluate its impact on business process performance, and to analyze the role of IT regarding the achievement of enterprise objectives. This paper discusses approaches for evaluating IT from an economic-driven perspective. Our comparison is based on a framework distinguishing between classification criteria and evaluation criteria. The former allow for the categorization of evaluation approaches based on their similarities and differences. The latter, by contrast, represent attributes that allow to evaluate the discussed approaches. Finally, we give an example of a typical economic-driven IT evaluation
Business and Information Technology Alignment Measurement -- a recent Literature Review
Since technology has been involved in the business context, Business and
Information Technology Alignment (BITA) has been one of the main concerns of IT
and Business executives and directors due to its importance to overall company
performance, especially today in the age of digital transformation. Several
models and frameworks have been developed for BITA implementation and for
measuring their level of success, each one with a different approach to this
desired state. The BITA measurement is one of the main decision-making tools in
the strategic domain of companies. In general, the classical-internal alignment
is the most measured domain and the external environment evolution alignment is
the least measured. This literature review aims to characterize and analyze
current research on BITA measurement with a comprehensive view of the works
published over the last 15 years to identify potential gaps and future areas of
