    A four-legs matrix converter ground power unit with repetitive voltage control

    In this paper, a four-leg matrix converter is proposed as the power conversion core for aircraft ground power unit (GPU) applications. This structure allows easy management of unbalanced and nonlinear loads with minimal disruption of the power supply operation. A hybrid repetitive-traditional control system is proposed to regulate the output voltage of the GPU. This solution reduces the steady-state tracking error, maintaining fast dynamic characteristics, and increases the stability of the converter compared to conventional approaches. Simulations and experimental results from a 7.5-KW converter prototype are presented to verify the operation of the proposed configuration and to prove the effectiveness of the solution

    The technology of direct AC/AC power conversion (Matrix Converters) is gaining increasing interest in the scientific community, particularly for aerospace applications. The aim of this research project is to investigate the use of direct AC/AC three phase four-leg Matrix Converter as ground power unit to supply aircraft with power during stopover or maintenance in airports. The converter fourth leg is used to provide a path for the zero sequence components when feeding unbalanced or non-linear loads. A high bandwidth controller is required to regulate the output voltage of Matrix Converter with a 400Hz output frequency. However, the controller bandwidth is limited due to the reduced ratio between the converter switching frequency and the fundamental frequency. In this case undesirable, periodic errors and distortion will exist in the output voltage above all in the presence of a non-linear or unbalanced load. Digital repetitive control system is proposed to regulate the output voltage of a four-leg Matrix Converter in an ABC reference frame. The proposed control structure introduces a high gain at the fundamental and its integer multiple frequencies. Using the proposed repetitive controller will reduce the tracking error between the output and the reference voltage, as well as increasing the stability of the converter under balanced and unbalanced load conditions. Simulation studies using SABER and MATLAB software packages show that the proposed controller is able to regulate the output voltage during balanced and unbalanced load conditions and during the presence of non-linear load. In order to validate the effectiveness of the proposed controller, an experimental prototype of a 7.5KW has been implemented in PEMC laboratory using DSP/FPGA platform to control the converter prototype. The steady state and the dynamic performance of the proposed control strategy are investigated in details, and extensive experimental tests have showed that the proposed controller was able to offer high tracking accuracy, fast transient response and able to regulate the output voltage during balanced, unbalanced and non-linear loading

    A Novel Control Method For Grid Side Inverters Under Generalized Unbalanced Operating Conditions

    This thesis provides a summary on renewable energy sources integration into the grid, using an inverter, along with a comprehensive literature research on variety of available control methods. A new generalized method for grid side inverter control under unbalanced operating conditions is also proposed. The presented control method provides complete harmonic elimination in line currents and DC link voltage with adjustable power factor. The method is general, and can be used for all levels of imbalance in grid voltages and line impedances. The control algorithm proposed in this work has been implemented by using MATLAB Simulink and dSPACE RT1104 control system. Simulation and experimental results presented in this thesis are in excellent agreement

    Predictive current control with instantaneous reactive power minimization for a four-leg indirect matrix converter

    This paper presents the experimental valida¬tion of a predictive current control strategy with minimiza¬tion of the instantaneous reactive input power for a Four-Leg Indirect Matrix Converter (4Leg-IMC). The topology includes an input matrix converter stage, which provides the dc voltage for a four-leg voltage source converter (VSC) output stage. The VSC’s fourth leg provides a path for the zero sequence load current. The control technique is based on a finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) strategy, whereby the switching states for the input and out¬put converters are selected by evaluating a predictive cost function. This results in a simpler approach than that seen in other well-known modulation methods, such as three-dimensional space vector modulation (3D-SVM). Positive dc voltage, (a requirement for the safe operation of the IMC) and minimization of the instantaneous input reactive power are obtained, while maintaining good tracking of the load reference currents. Furthermore, soft switching is achieved by synchronizing the state changes in the input stage with the application of zero voltage space vectors in the inverter stage. The control strategy is experimentally verified using a laboratory prototype

    Analysis of the Harmonic Performance of Power Converters and Electrical Drives

    Power converters have progressively become the most efficient and attractive solution in recent decades in many industrial sectors, ranging from electric mobility, aerospace applications to attain better electric aircraft concepts, vast renewable energy resource integration in the transmission and distribution grid, the design of smart and efficient energy management systems, the usage of energy storage systems, and the achievement of smart grid paradigm development, among others.In order to achieve efficient solutions in this wide energy scenario, over the past few decades, considerable attention has been paid by the academia and industry in order to develop new methods to achieve power systems with maximum harmonic performance aiming for two main targets. On the one hand, the high-performance harmonic performance of power systems would lead to improvements in their power density, size and weight. This becomes critical in applications such as aerospace or electric mobility, where the power converters are on-board systems. On the other hand, current standards are becoming more and more strict in order to reduce the EMI and EMC noise, as well as meeting minimum power quality requirements (i.e., grid code standards for grid-tied power systems)

    Four-wire microgrids (MGs) and distribution systems are inherently unbalanced with the presence of negative and zero sequence components in voltages and currents. In small autonomous systems, the imbalance, in addition to the harmonic distortion produced by nonlinear loads, can significantly affect the power quality, loadability, and stability of the system. Furthermore, in isolated networks with significant generation from intermittent renewable energy sources, the stiffness of the system is reduced and this could amplify the effects of imbalance on the stability and power quality. To mitigate some of these problems, a novel methodology based on the application of a four-leg active power filter is proposed in this paper. The control of the compensator is based on the conservative power theory augmented by resonant controllers.     A design methodology of multi-resonant controllers for high performance 400Hz ground power units

    In aerospace applications, a Ground Power Unit (GPU) has to provide balanced and sinusoidal 400 Hz phase-to-neutral voltages to unbalanced and non-linear single-phase loads. Compensation of high-order harmonics is complex, as the ratio between sampling frequency and compensated harmonics can be very small. Thus multiple superimposed resonant controllers or PI nested controllers in multiple dq frames are not good alternatives. The first approach cannot ensure stability, while the second cannot track sinusoidal zero-sequence components, typically present in unbalanced system, and unachievable high bandwidth at the inner current control loop is typically required. In this paper, a simple methodology for designing a single-loop, multiple resonant controller for simultaneous mitigation of several high-order harmonics, ensuring stability, is presented. Experimental results, based on a 6kW four-leg NPC converter, validates the proposed controller design, showing excellent steady state and transient performance

    Virtual variable sampling discrete fourier transform based selective odd-order harmonic repetitive control of DC/AC converters

    This paper proposes a frequency adaptive discrete Fourier transform (DFT) based repetitive control (RC) scheme for DC/AC converters. By generating infinite magnitude on the interested harmonics, the DFT-based RC offers a selective harmonic scheme to eliminate waveform distortion. The traditional DFT-based selective harmonic RC, however, is sensitive to frequency fluctuation since even very small frequency fluctuation leads to a severe magnitude decrease. To address the problem, virtual variable sampling method, which creates an adjustable virtual delay unit to closely approximate a variable sampling delay, is proposed to enable the DFT-based selective harmonic RC to be frequency adaptive. Moreover, a selective odd-order harmonic DFT filter is developed to deal with the dominant odd order harmonic. Because it halves the number of sampling delays in the DFT filter, the system transient response gets nearly 50% improvement. A comprehensive series of experiments of the proposed VVS DFT-based selective odd-order harmonic RC controlled programmable AC power source under frequency variations are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method
