User-centered visual analysis using a hybrid reasoning architecture for intensive care units
One problem pertaining to Intensive Care Unit information systems is that, in some cases, a very dense display of data can result. To ensure the overview and readability of the increasing volumes of data, some special features are required (e.g., data prioritization, clustering, and selection mechanisms) with the application of analytical methods (e.g., temporal data abstraction, principal component analysis, and detection of events). This paper addresses the problem of improving the integration of the visual and analytical methods applied to medical monitoring systems. We present a knowledge- and machine learning-based approach to support the knowledge discovery process with appropriate analytical and visual methods. Its potential benefit to the development of user interfaces for intelligent monitors that can assist with the detection and explanation of new, potentially threatening medical events. The proposed hybrid reasoning architecture provides an interactive graphical user interface to adjust the parameters of the analytical methods based on the users' task at hand. The action sequences performed on the graphical user interface by the user are consolidated in a dynamic knowledge base with specific hybrid reasoning that integrates symbolic and connectionist approaches. These sequences of expert knowledge acquisition can be very efficient for making easier knowledge emergence during a similar experience and positively impact the monitoring of critical situations. The provided graphical user interface incorporating a user-centered visual analysis is exploited to facilitate the natural and effective representation of clinical information for patient care
Matrix product states for anyonic systems and efficient simulation of dynamics
Matrix product states (MPS) have proven to be a very successful tool to study
lattice systems with local degrees of freedom such as spins or bosons.
Topologically ordered systems can support anyonic particles which are labeled
by conserved topological charges and collectively carry non-local degrees of
freedom. In this paper we extend the formalism of MPS to lattice systems of
anyons. The anyonic MPS is constructed from tensors that explicitly conserve
topological charge. We describe how to adapt the time-evolving block decimation
(TEBD) algorithm to the anyonic MPS in order to simulate dynamics under a local
and charge-conserving Hamiltonian. To demonstrate the effectiveness of anyonic
TEBD algorithm, we used it to simulate (i) the ground state (using imaginary
time evolution) of an infinite 1D critical system of (a) Ising anyons and (b)
Fibonacci anyons both of which are well studied, and (ii) the real time
dynamics of an anyonic Hubbard-like model of a single Ising anyon hopping on a
ladder geometry with an anyonic flux threading each island of the ladder. Our
results pertaining to (ii) give insight into the transport properties of
anyons. The anyonic MPS formalism can be readily adapted to study systems with
conserved symmetry charges, as this is equivalent to a specialization of the
more general anyonic case.Comment: 18 pages, 15 figue
Dynamic hybrid simulation of batch processes driven by a scheduling module
Simulation is now a CAPE tool widely used by practicing engineers for process design and control. In particular, it allows various offline analyses to improve system performance such as productivity, energy efficiency, waste reduction, etc. In this framework, we have developed the dynamic hybrid simulation environment PrODHyS whose particularity is to provide general and reusable object-oriented components dedicated to the modeling of devices and operations found in chemical processes. Unlike continuous processes, the dynamic simulation of batch processes requires the execution of control recipes to achieve a set of production orders. For these reasons, PrODHyS is coupled to a scheduling module (ProSched) based on a MILP mathematical model in order to initialize various operational parameters and to ensure a proper completion of the simulation. This paper focuses on the procedure used to generate the simulation model corresponding to the realization of a scenario described through a particular scheduling
Modelling IEEE 802.11 CSMA/CA RTS/CTS with stochastic bigraphs with sharing
Stochastic bigraphical reactive systems (SBRS) is a recent formalism for modelling systems that evolve
in time and space. However, the underlying spatial model is based on sets of trees and thus cannot represent
spatial locations that are shared among several entities in a simple or intuitive way. We adopt an extension of
the formalism, SBRS with sharing, in which the topology is modelled by a directed acyclic graph structure. We
give an overview of SBRS with sharing, we extend it with rule priorities, and then use it to develop a model
of the 802.11 CSMA/CA RTS/CTS protocol with exponential backoff, for an arbitrary network topology with
possibly overlapping signals. The model uses sharing to model overlapping connectedness areas, instantaneous
prioritised rules for deterministic computations, and stochastic rules with exponential reaction rates to model
constant and uniformly distributed timeouts and constant transmission times. Equivalence classes of model states
modulo instantaneous reactions yield states in a CTMC that can be analysed using the model checker PRISM.
We illustrate the model on a simple example wireless network with three overlapping signals and we present some
example quantitative properties
Overview on agent-based social modelling and the use of formal languages
Transdisciplinary Models and Applications investigates a variety of programming languages used in validating and verifying models in order to assist in their eventual implementation. This book will explore different methods of evaluating and formalizing simulation models, enabling computer and industrial engineers, mathematicians, and students working with computer simulations to thoroughly understand the progression from simulation to product, improving the overall effectiveness of modeling systems.Postprint (author's final draft
PRISM: a tool for automatic verification of probabilistic systems
Probabilistic model checking is an automatic formal verification technique for analysing quantitative properties of systems which exhibit stochastic behaviour. PRISM is a probabilistic model checking tool which has already been successfully deployed in a wide range of application domains, from real-time communication protocols to biological signalling pathways. The tool has recently undergone a significant amount of development. Major additions include facilities to manually explore models, Monte-Carlo discrete-event simulation techniques for approximate model analysis (including support for distributed simulation) and the ability to compute cost- and reward-based measures, e.g. "the expected energy consumption of the system before the first failure occurs". This paper presents an overview of all the main features of PRISM. More information can be found on the website: www.cs.bham.ac.uk/~dxp/prism
GATE -- an Environment to Support Research and Development in Natural Language Engineering
We describe a software environment to support research and development in natural language (NL) engineering. This environment -- GATE (General Architecture for Text Engineering) -- aims to advance research in the area of machine processing of natural languages by providing a software infrastructure on top of which heterogeneous NL component modules may be evaluated and refined individually or may be combined into larger application systems. Thus, GATE aims to support both researchers and developers working on component technologies (e.g. parsing, tagging, morphological analysis) and those working on developing end-user applications (e.g. information extraction, text summarisation, document generation, machine translation, and second language learning). GATE will promote reuse of component technology, permit specialisation and collaboration in large-scale projects, and allow for the comparison and evaluation of alternative technologies. The first release of GATE is now available
