Stuck in Traffic (SiT) Attacks: A Framework for Identifying Stealthy Attacks that Cause Traffic Congestion
Recent advances in wireless technologies have enabled many new applications
in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) such as collision avoidance,
cooperative driving, congestion avoidance, and traffic optimization. Due to the
vulnerable nature of wireless communication against interference and
intentional jamming, ITS face new challenges to ensure the reliability and the
safety of the overall system. In this paper, we expose a class of stealthy
attacks -- Stuck in Traffic (SiT) attacks -- that aim to cause congestion by
exploiting how drivers make decisions based on smart traffic signs. An attacker
mounting a SiT attack solves a Markov Decision Process problem to find
optimal/suboptimal attack policies in which he/she interferes with a
well-chosen subset of signals that are based on the state of the system. We
apply Approximate Policy Iteration (API) algorithms to derive potent attack
policies. We evaluate their performance on a number of systems and compare them
to other attack policies including random, myopic and DoS attack policies. The
generated policies, albeit suboptimal, are shown to significantly outperform
other attack policies as they maximize the expected cumulative reward from the
standpoint of the attacker
An Efficient Requirement-Aware Attachment Policy for Future Millimeter Wave Vehicular Networks
The automotive industry is rapidly evolving towards connected and autonomous
vehicles, whose ever more stringent data traffic requirements might exceed the
capacity of traditional technologies for vehicular networks. In this scenario,
densely deploying millimeter wave (mmWave) base stations is a promising
approach to provide very high transmission speeds to the vehicles. However,
mmWave signals suffer from high path and penetration losses which might render
the communication unreliable and discontinuous. Coexistence between mmWave and
Long Term Evolution (LTE) communication systems has therefore been considered
to guarantee increased capacity and robustness through heterogeneous
networking. Following this rationale, we face the challenge of designing fair
and efficient attachment policies in heterogeneous vehicular networks.
Traditional methods based on received signal quality criteria lack
consideration of the vehicle's individual requirements and traffic demands, and
lead to suboptimal resource allocation across the network. In this paper we
propose a Quality-of-Service (QoS) aware attachment scheme which biases the
cell selection as a function of the vehicular service requirements, preventing
the overload of transmission links. Our simulations demonstrate that the
proposed strategy significantly improves the percentage of vehicles satisfying
application requirements and delivers efficient and fair association compared

Safety control of monotone systems with bounded uncertainties
Monotone systems are prevalent in models of engineering applications such as transportation and biological networks. In this paper, we investigate the problem of finding a control strategy for a discrete time positive monotone system with bounded uncertainties such that the evolution of the system is guaranteed to be confined to a safe set in the state space for all times. By exploiting monotonicity, we propose an approach to this problem which is based on constraint programming. We find control strategies that are based on repetitions of finite sequences of control actions. We show that, under assumptions made in the paper, safety control of monotone systems does not require state measurement. We demonstrate the results on a signalized urban traffic network, where the safety objective is to keep the traffic flow free of congestion.This work was partially supported by the NSF under grants CPS-1446151 and CMMI-1400167.
