Single-phase microgrid with seamless transition capabilities between modes of operation

    Get PDF
Microgrids are an effective way to increase the penetration of DG into the grid. They are capable of operating either in grid-connected or in islanded mode thereby increasing the supply reliability for the end user. This paper focuses on achieving seamless transitions from islanded to grid-connected and vice versa for a single phase microgrid made up from voltage controlled voltage source inverters (VC-VSIs) and current controlled voltage source inverters (CC-VSIs) working together in both modes of operation. The primary control structures for the VC-VSIs and CC-VSIs is considered together with the secondary control loops that are used to synchronize the microgrid as a single unit to the grid. Simulation results are given that show the seamless transitions between the two modes without any disconnection times for the CC-VSIs and VC-VSIs connected to the microgrid.peer-reviewe

Adaptive Energy Storage System Control for Microgrid Stability Enhancement

    Get PDF
Microgrids are local power systems of different sizes located inside the distribution systems. Each microgrid contains a group of interconnected loads and distributed energy resources that acts as a single controllable entity with respect to the grid. Their islanding operation capabilities during emergencies improve the resiliency and reliability of the electric energy supply. Due to its low kinetic energy storage capacity, maintaining microgrid stability is challenging under system contingencies and unpredictable power generation from renewable resources. This dissertation highlights the potential benefits of flexibly utilizing the battery energy storage systems to enhance the stability of microgrids. The main contribution of this research consists in the development of a storage converter controller with an additional stability margin that enables it to improve microgrid frequency and voltage regulation as well as its induction motor post-fault speed recovery. This new autonomous control technique is implemented by adaptively setting the converter controller parameters based on its estimated phase-locked loop frequency deviation and terminal voltage magnitude measurement. This work also assists in the microgrid design process by determining the normalized minimum storage converter sizing under a wide range of microgrid motor inertia, loading and fault clearing time with both symmetrical and asymmetrical fault types. This study evaluates the expandability of the proposed control methodologies under an unbalanced meshed microgrid with fault-induced feeder switching and multiple contingencies in addition to random power output from renewable generators. The favorable results demonstrate the robust storage converter controller performance under a dynamic changing microgrid environment

Control Strategy for Uninterrupted Microgrid Mode Transfer during Unintentional Islanding Scenarios

    Get PDF
This paper presents a microgrid control strategy to unify the control topology for energy storage systems (ESS) and renewable energy sources (RES) inverters in an AC microgrid and to protect the microgrid reliability from unintentional islanding instability using control loops which use the DC link voltage as a feedback. This bounds the DC link voltage and provides reliable operation in the microgrid. Simulation validates the proposed control strategy, and experiment results extol the concept

Study of large-signal stability of an inverter-based generator using a Lyapunov function

    Get PDF
This document analyses the large-signal stability for an inverter-based generator such as photovoltaic and wind power sources. The objective of this study is to determine the stability region taking into account the electrical and control signal of the generator. The generator uses the concept of the electrostatic machine for the model of the generator. Finally, the applied procedure to find the Lyapunov's function is the Popov method, which not only permits to generate a valid function but also to determine the stability region of the system.Postprint (author's final draft

H∞ based control of a DC/DC buck converter feeding a constant power load in uncertain DC microgrid system

DC microgrids are gaining more and more popularity and are becoming a more viable alternative to AC microgrids (MGs) due to their advantages in terms of simpler power converter stages, flexible control algorithms and the absence of synchronization and reactive power. However, DC-MGs are prone to instability issues associated with the presence of nonlinear loads such as constant power loads (CPL) known by their incremental negative impedance (INI), which may lead to voltage collapse of the main DC Bus. In this paper, -based controller of a source side buck converter is designed to avoid the instability issues caused by the load-side converter acting as a CPL. Besides, the proposed controller allows a perfect rejection of all perturbations that may arise from parameter variations, input voltage and CPL current fluctuations. The design process of H-based controller is based on the Golver Doyle Optimization Algorithm (GDOA), which requires an augmented system extracted from the small-signal model of the DC/DC converter including the mathematical model of parameter variations and overall external perturbations. The based controller involves the use of weight functions in order to get the desired performances. The proposed controller is easy to implement and lead to reducing the implementation cost and avoid the use of current measurement that may have some disadvantages. The derived controller is validated by simulation performed in Psim software and experimental setup
