Meta-heuristic algorithms in car engine design: a literature survey
Meta-heuristic algorithms are often inspired by natural phenomena, including the evolution of species in Darwinian natural selection theory, ant behaviors in biology, flock behaviors of some birds, and annealing in metallurgy. Due to their great potential in solving difficult optimization problems, meta-heuristic algorithms have found their way into automobile engine design. There are different optimization problems arising in different areas of car engine management including calibration, control system, fault diagnosis, and modeling. In this paper we review the state-of-the-art applications of different meta-heuristic algorithms in engine management systems. The review covers a wide range of research, including the application of meta-heuristic algorithms in engine calibration, optimizing engine control systems, engine fault diagnosis, and optimizing different parts of engines and modeling. The meta-heuristic algorithms reviewed in this paper include evolutionary algorithms, evolution strategy, evolutionary programming, genetic programming, differential evolution, estimation of distribution algorithm, ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization, memetic algorithms, and artificial immune system
A similarity-based cooperative co-evolutionary algorithm for dynamic interval multi-objective optimization problems

The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.Dynamic interval multi-objective optimization problems (DI-MOPs) are very common in real-world applications. However, there are few evolutionary algorithms that are suitable for tackling DI-MOPs up to date. A framework of dynamic interval multi-objective cooperative co-evolutionary optimization based on the interval similarity is presented in this paper to handle DI-MOPs. In the framework, a strategy for decomposing decision variables is first proposed, through which all the decision variables are divided into two groups according to the interval similarity between each decision variable and interval parameters. Following that, two sub-populations are utilized to cooperatively optimize decision variables in the two groups. Furthermore, two response strategies, rgb0.00,0.00,0.00i.e., a strategy based on the change intensity and a random mutation strategy, are employed to rapidly track the changing Pareto front of the optimization problem. The proposed algorithm is applied to eight benchmark optimization instances rgb0.00,0.00,0.00as well as a multi-period portfolio selection problem and compared with five state-of-the-art evolutionary algorithms. The experimental results reveal that the proposed algorithm is very competitive on most optimization instances
Improved dynamical particle swarm optimization method for structural dynamics
A methodology to the multiobjective structural design of buildings based on an improved particle swarm optimization algorithm is presented, which has proved to be very efficient and robust in nonlinear problems and when the optimization objectives are in conflict. In particular, the behaviour of the particle swarm optimization (PSO) classical algorithm is improved by dynamically adding autoadaptive mechanisms that enhance the exploration/exploitation trade-off and diversity of the proposed algorithm, avoiding getting trapped in local minima. A novel integrated optimization system was developed, called DI-PSO, to solve this problem which is able to control and even improve the structural behaviour under seismic excitations. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, the methodology is tested against some benchmark problems. Then a 3-story-building model is optimized under different objective cases, concluding that the improved multiobjective optimization methodology using DI-PSO is more efficient as compared with those designs obtained using single optimization.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
A Novel Multiobjective Cell Switch-Off Framework for Cellular Networks
Cell Switch-Off (CSO) is recognized as a promising approach to reduce the
energy consumption in next-generation cellular networks. However, CSO poses
serious challenges not only from the resource allocation perspective but also
from the implementation point of view. Indeed, CSO represents a difficult
optimization problem due to its NP-complete nature. Moreover, there are a
number of important practical limitations in the implementation of CSO schemes,
such as the need for minimizing the real-time complexity and the number of
on-off/off-on transitions and CSO-induced handovers. This article introduces a
novel approach to CSO based on multiobjective optimization that makes use of
the statistical description of the service demand (known by operators). In
addition, downlink and uplink coverage criteria are included and a comparative
analysis between different models to characterize intercell interference is
also presented to shed light on their impact on CSO. The framework
distinguishes itself from other proposals in two ways: 1) The number of
on-off/off-on transitions as well as handovers are minimized, and 2) the
computationally-heavy part of the algorithm is executed offline, which makes
its implementation feasible. The results show that the proposed scheme achieves
substantial energy savings in small cell deployments where service demand is
not uniformly distributed, without compromising the Quality-of-Service (QoS) or
requiring heavy real-time processing
Multiobjective Tactical Planning under Uncertainty for Air Traffic Flow and Capacity Management
We investigate a method to deal with congestion of sectors and delays in the
tactical phase of air traffic flow and capacity management. It relies on
temporal objectives given for every point of the flight plans and shared among
the controllers in order to create a collaborative environment. This would
enhance the transition from the network view of the flow management to the
local view of air traffic control. Uncertainty is modeled at the trajectory
level with temporal information on the boundary points of the crossed sectors
and then, we infer the probabilistic occupancy count. Therefore, we can model
the accuracy of the trajectory prediction in the optimization process in order
to fix some safety margins. On the one hand, more accurate is our prediction;
more efficient will be the proposed solutions, because of the tighter safety
margins. On the other hand, when uncertainty is not negligible, the proposed
solutions will be more robust to disruptions. Furthermore, a multiobjective
algorithm is used to find the tradeoff between the delays and congestion, which
are antagonist in airspace with high traffic density. The flow management
position can choose manually, or automatically with a preference-based
algorithm, the adequate solution. This method is tested against two instances,

On green routing and scheduling problem
The vehicle routing and scheduling problem has been studied with much
interest within the last four decades. In this paper, some of the existing
literature dealing with routing and scheduling problems with environmental
issues is reviewed, and a description is provided of the problems that have
been investigated and how they are treated using combinatorial optimization
tools
ND-Tree-based update: a Fast Algorithm for the Dynamic Non-Dominance Problem
In this paper we propose a new method called ND-Tree-based update (or shortly
ND-Tree) for the dynamic non-dominance problem, i.e. the problem of online
update of a Pareto archive composed of mutually non-dominated points. It uses a
new ND-Tree data structure in which each node represents a subset of points
contained in a hyperrectangle defined by its local approximate ideal and nadir
points. By building subsets containing points located close in the objective
space and using basic properties of the local ideal and nadir points we can
efficiently avoid searching many branches in the tree. ND-Tree may be used in
multiobjective evolutionary algorithms and other multiobjective metaheuristics
to update an archive of potentially non-dominated points. We prove that the
proposed algorithm has sub-linear time complexity under mild assumptions. We
experimentally compare ND-Tree to the simple list, Quad-tree, and M-Front
methods using artificial and realistic benchmarks with up to 10 objectives and
show that with this new method substantial reduction of the number of point
comparisons and computational time can be obtained. Furthermore, we apply the
method to the non-dominated sorting problem showing that it is highly
competitive to some recently proposed algorithms dedicated to this problem.Comment: 15 pages, 21 figures, 3 table
Metaheuristic design of feedforward neural networks: a review of two decades of research
Over the past two decades, the feedforward neural network (FNN) optimization has been a key interest among the researchers and practitioners of multiple disciplines. The FNN optimization is often viewed from the various perspectives: the optimization of weights, network architecture, activation nodes, learning parameters, learning environment, etc. Researchers adopted such different viewpoints mainly to improve the FNN's generalization ability. The gradient-descent algorithm such as backpropagation has been widely applied to optimize the FNNs. Its success is evident from the FNN's application to numerous real-world problems. However, due to the limitations of the gradient-based optimization methods, the metaheuristic algorithms including the evolutionary algorithms, swarm intelligence, etc., are still being widely explored by the researchers aiming to obtain generalized FNN for a given problem. This article attempts to summarize a broad spectrum of FNN optimization methodologies including conventional and metaheuristic approaches. This article also tries to connect various research directions emerged out of the FNN optimization practices, such as evolving neural network (NN), cooperative coevolution NN, complex-valued NN, deep learning, extreme learning machine, quantum NN, etc. Additionally, it provides interesting research challenges for future research to cope-up with the present information processing era

Improving the multi-objective evolutionary optimization algorithm for hydropower reservoir operations in the California Oroville-Thermalito complex
This study demonstrates the application of an improved Evolutionary optimization Algorithm (EA), titled Multi-Objective Complex Evolution Global Optimization Method with Principal Component Analysis and Crowding Distance Operator (MOSPD), for the hydropower reservoir operation of the Oroville-Thermalito Complex (OTC) - a crucial head-water resource for the California State Water Project (SWP). In the OTC's water-hydropower joint management study, the nonlinearity of hydropower generation and the reservoir's water elevation-storage relationship are explicitly formulated by polynomial function in order to closely match realistic situations and reduce linearization approximation errors. Comparison among different curve-fitting methods is conducted to understand the impact of the simplification of reservoir topography. In the optimization algorithm development, techniques of crowding distance and principal component analysis are implemented to improve the diversity and convergence of the optimal solutions towards and along the Pareto optimal set in the objective space. A comparative evaluation among the new algorithm MOSPD, the original Multi-Objective Complex Evolution Global Optimization Method (MOCOM), the Multi-Objective Differential Evolution method (MODE), the Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA), the Multi-Objective Simulated Annealing approach (MOSA), and the Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization scheme (MOPSO) is conducted using the benchmark functions. The results show that best the MOSPD algorithm demonstrated the best and most consistent performance when compared with other algorithms on the test problems. The newly developed algorithm (MOSPD) is further applied to the OTC reservoir releasing problem during the snow melting season in 1998 (wet year), 2000 (normal year) and 2001 (dry year), in which the more spreading and converged non-dominated solutions of MOSPD provide decision makers with better operational alternatives for effectively and efficiently managing the OTC reservoirs in response to the different climates, especially drought, which has become more and more severe and frequent in California
