    State of AI-based monitoring in smart manufacturing and introduction to focused section

    Over the past few decades, intelligentization, supported by artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, has become an important trend for industrial manufacturing, accelerating the development of smart manufacturing. In modern industries, standard AI has been endowed with additional attributes, yielding the so-called industrial artificial intelligence (IAI) that has become the technical core of smart manufacturing. AI-powered manufacturing brings remarkable improvements in many aspects of closed-loop production chains from manufacturing processes to end product logistics. In particular, IAI incorporating domain knowledge has benefited the area of production monitoring considerably. Advanced AI methods such as deep neural networks, adversarial training, and transfer learning have been widely used to support both diagnostics and predictive maintenance of the entire production process. It is generally believed that IAI is the critical technologies needed to drive the future evolution of industrial manufacturing. This article offers a comprehensive overview of AI-powered manufacturing and its applications in monitoring. More specifically, it summarizes the key technologies of IAI and discusses their typical application scenarios with respect to three major aspects of production monitoring: fault diagnosis, remaining useful life prediction, and quality inspection. In addition, the existing problems and future research directions of IAI are also discussed. This article further introduces the papers in this focused section on AI-based monitoring in smart manufacturing by weaving them into the overview, highlighting how they contribute to and extend the body of literature in this area

    Diagnosis of Bearing Damage in Mechanical Equipment Combining Fuzzy Logic Variable Phase Layered Algorithm

    The paper aims at the problem that the bearing of mechanical equipment affects the safe, stable and efficient operation of mechanical equipment. In this paper, a fuzzy logic variable phase layered algorithm (flvpla) is proposed. The dimension reduction is realized by calculating the vibration signal. The vibration signal is effectively used to diagnose bearing fault, and the signal value is reduced to conduction fault classification. Finally, the experimental results show that the dimension reduction effect based on flvpla is better than that based on principal component analysis (PCA) algorithm and LTSA. The fault recognition rate of ba-svm is significantly higher than that of genetic algorithm optimized support vector machine (GA-SVM) and particle swarm optimization support vector machine (PSO-SVM). Therefore, the combination of flvpla and ba-svm can obtain higher recognition accuracy

    Degradation stage classification via interpretable feature learning

    Predictive maintenance (PdM) advocates for the usage of machine learning technologies to monitor asset's health conditions and plan maintenance activities accordingly. However, according to the specific degradation process, some health-related measures (e.g. temperature) may be not informative enough to reliably assess the health stage. Moreover, each measure needs to be properly treated to extract the information linked to the health stage. Those issues are usually addressed by performing a manual feature engineering, which results in high management cost and poor generalization capability of those approaches. In this work, we address this issue by coupling a health stage classifier with a feature learning mechanism. With feature learning, minimally processed data are automatically transformed into informative features. Many effective feature learning approaches are based on deep learning. With those, the features are obtained as a non-linear combination of the inputs, thus it is difficult to understand the input's contribution to the classification outcome and so the reasoning behind the model. Still, these insights are increasingly required to interpret the results and assess the reliability of the model. In this regard, we propose a feature learning approach able to (i) effectively extract high-quality features by processing different input signals, and (ii) provide useful insights about the most informative domain transformations (e.g. Fourier transform or probability density function) of the input signals (e.g. vibration or temperature). The effectiveness of the proposed approach is tested with publicly available real-world datasets about bearings' progressive deterioration and compared with the traditional feature engineering approach
