    Measuring the Impact of China’s Digital Heritage: Developing Multidimensional Impact Indicators for Digital Museum Resources

    This research investigates how to best assess the impact of China’s digital heritage and focuses on digital museum resources. It is motivated by the need for tools to help governing bodies and heritage organisations assess the impact of digital heritage resources. The research sits at the intersection of Chinese cultural heritage, digital heritage, and impact assessment (IA) studies, which forms the theoretical framework of the thesis. Informed by the Balanced Value Impact (BVI) Model, this thesis addresses the following questions: 1. How do Western heritage discourses and Chinese culture shape ‘cultural heritage’ and the museum digital ecosystem in modern China? 2. Which indicators demonstrate the multidimensional impacts of digital museum resources in China? How should the BVI Model be adapted to fit the Chinese cultural landscape? 3. How do different stakeholders perceive these impact indicators? What are the implications for impact indicator development and application? This research applies a mixed-method approach, combining desk research, survey, and interview with both public audiences and museum professionals. The research findings identify 18 impact indicators, covering economic, social, innovation and operational dimensions. Notably, the perceived usefulness and importance of different impact indicators vary among and between public participants and museum professionals. The study finds the BVI Model helpful in guiding the indicator development process, particularly in laying a solid foundation to inform decision-making. The Strategic Perspectives and Value Lenses provide a structure to organise various indicators and keep them focused on the impact objectives. However, the findings also suggest that the Value Lenses are merely signifiers; their signified meanings change with cultural contexts and should be examined when the Model is applied in a different cultural setting. This research addresses the absence of digital resource IA in China’s heritage sector. It contributes to the field of IA for digital heritage within and beyond the Chinese context by challenging the current target-setting culture in performance evaluation. Moreover, the research ratifies the utility of the BVI Model while modifying it to fit China’s unique cultural setting. This thesis as a whole demonstrates the value of using multidimensional impact indicators for evidence-based decision-making and better museum practices in the digital domain

Celem tej pracy było zbadanie przekonań i praktyk nauczycieli przedmiotów ścisłych i matematyki w arabskich szkołach średnich w Izraelu w obliczy wdrażania nowej reformy edukacyjnej w tym kraju, silnie osadzonej na koncepcji meaningful learning. Zgodnie z tą koncepcją, uczniowie powinni być aktywni i zaangażowani w proces rozwiązywania problemów, którego rdzeniem jest szeroko ujmowany dialog pomiędzy uczestnikami procesu uczenia się. W badaniach wykorzystano strategię badań jakościowych. Prowadzono obserwacje w klasie, częściowo ustrukturyzowane wywiady oraz analizy dokumentów (m.in. planów lekcji, testów, arkuszy roboczych) i notatek terenowych. Uczestnikami badania było dwudziestu nauczycieli z trzech szkół średnich w społeczeństwie arabskim. Uzyskane dane pozwoliły zarysować obraz przekonań tych nauczycieli na temat meaningful learning oraz zidentyfikować sytuacje, które nauczyciele postrzegają jako realizację tej koncepcji. Praca kończy się rekomendacjami dotyczącymi dalszych etapów wdrażania reformy edukacji w Izraelu.The introduction of a new reform potentially challenges teachers’ beliefs and practices about teaching. This case study explores these challenges in the context of a new reform in Israel, where major educational reform has been undertaken. A considerable body of research, alternatively, advocates that teachers’ beliefs about teaching and learning affect their teaching practices and many aspects of their professional work. These beliefs and practices influence many factors on the contextual and teacher levels. Thus, this study aimed to investigate and understand Arab middle school science and mathematics teachers’ beliefs, practices, and implementation of meaningful learning in Israel. The resulting data served to construct a background picture regarding teachers’ beliefs on meaningful learning, classroom practices, and identifying situations that teachers perceived as the implementation of meaningful learning. The study found also that curricular demands, teacher perceptions of their students, pressures of time, assessment, crowded classrooms, lack of resources, workload, and inadequate teacher understanding of the components of meaningful learning inhibited student- centered instruction. Thus, along with the reformation of teachers, there should also be a reformation in the context of the learning atmosphere and infrastructures in tune with the new reform’s intentions

    Blending the Material and Digital World for Hybrid Interfaces

    The development of digital technologies in the 21st century is progressing continuously and new device classes such as tablets, smartphones or smartwatches are finding their way into our everyday lives. However, this development also poses problems, as these prevailing touch and gestural interfaces often lack tangibility, take little account of haptic qualities and therefore require full attention from their users. Compared to traditional tools and analog interfaces, the human skills to experience and manipulate material in its natural environment and context remain unexploited. To combine the best of both, a key question is how it is possible to blend the material world and digital world to design and realize novel hybrid interfaces in a meaningful way. Research on Tangible User Interfaces (TUIs) investigates the coupling between physical objects and virtual data. In contrast, hybrid interfaces, which specifically aim to digitally enrich analog artifacts of everyday work, have not yet been sufficiently researched and systematically discussed. Therefore, this doctoral thesis rethinks how user interfaces can provide useful digital functionality while maintaining their physical properties and familiar patterns of use in the real world. However, the development of such hybrid interfaces raises overarching research questions about the design: Which kind of physical interfaces are worth exploring? What type of digital enhancement will improve existing interfaces? How can hybrid interfaces retain their physical properties while enabling new digital functions? What are suitable methods to explore different design? And how to support technology-enthusiast users in prototyping? For a systematic investigation, the thesis builds on a design-oriented, exploratory and iterative development process using digital fabrication methods and novel materials. As a main contribution, four specific research projects are presented that apply and discuss different visual and interactive augmentation principles along real-world applications. The applications range from digitally-enhanced paper, interactive cords over visual watch strap extensions to novel prototyping tools for smart garments. While almost all of them integrate visual feedback and haptic input, none of them are built on rigid, rectangular pixel screens or use standard input modalities, as they all aim to reveal new design approaches. The dissertation shows how valuable it can be to rethink familiar, analog applications while thoughtfully extending them digitally. Finally, this thesis’ extensive work of engineering versatile research platforms is accompanied by overarching conceptual work, user evaluations and technical experiments, as well as literature reviews.Die Durchdringung digitaler Technologien im 21. Jahrhundert schreitet stetig voran und neue Geräteklassen wie Tablets, Smartphones oder Smartwatches erobern unseren Alltag. Diese Entwicklung birgt aber auch Probleme, denn die vorherrschenden berührungsempfindlichen Oberflächen berücksichtigen kaum haptische Qualitäten und erfordern daher die volle Aufmerksamkeit ihrer Nutzer:innen. Im Vergleich zu traditionellen Werkzeugen und analogen Schnittstellen bleiben die menschlichen Fähigkeiten ungenutzt, die Umwelt mit allen Sinnen zu begreifen und wahrzunehmen. Um das Beste aus beiden Welten zu vereinen, stellt sich daher die Frage, wie neuartige hybride Schnittstellen sinnvoll gestaltet und realisiert werden können, um die materielle und die digitale Welt zu verschmelzen. In der Forschung zu Tangible User Interfaces (TUIs) wird die Verbindung zwischen physischen Objekten und virtuellen Daten untersucht. Noch nicht ausreichend erforscht wurden hingegen hybride Schnittstellen, die speziell darauf abzielen, physische Gegenstände des Alltags digital zu erweitern und anhand geeigneter Designparameter und Entwurfsräume systematisch zu untersuchen. In dieser Dissertation wird daher untersucht, wie Materialität und Digitalität nahtlos ineinander übergehen können. Es soll erforscht werden, wie künftige Benutzungsschnittstellen nützliche digitale Funktionen bereitstellen können, ohne ihre physischen Eigenschaften und vertrauten Nutzungsmuster in der realen Welt zu verlieren. Die Entwicklung solcher hybriden Ansätze wirft jedoch übergreifende Forschungsfragen zum Design auf: Welche Arten von physischen Schnittstellen sind es wert, betrachtet zu werden? Welche Art von digitaler Erweiterung verbessert das Bestehende? Wie können hybride Konzepte ihre physischen Eigenschaften beibehalten und gleichzeitig neue digitale Funktionen ermöglichen? Was sind geeignete Methoden, um verschiedene Designs zu erforschen? Wie kann man Technologiebegeisterte bei der Erstellung von Prototypen unterstützen? Für eine systematische Untersuchung stützt sich die Arbeit auf einen designorientierten, explorativen und iterativen Entwicklungsprozess unter Verwendung digitaler Fabrikationsmethoden und neuartiger Materialien. Im Hauptteil werden vier Forschungsprojekte vorgestellt, die verschiedene visuelle und interaktive Prinzipien entlang realer Anwendungen diskutieren. Die Szenarien reichen von digital angereichertem Papier, interaktiven Kordeln über visuelle Erweiterungen von Uhrarmbändern bis hin zu neuartigen Prototyping-Tools für intelligente Kleidungsstücke. Um neue Designansätze aufzuzeigen, integrieren nahezu alle visuelles Feedback und haptische Eingaben, um Alternativen zu Standard-Eingabemodalitäten auf starren Pixelbildschirmen zu schaffen. Die Dissertation hat gezeigt, wie wertvoll es sein kann, bekannte, analoge Anwendungen zu überdenken und sie dabei gleichzeitig mit Bedacht digital zu erweitern. Dabei umfasst die vorliegende Arbeit sowohl realisierte technische Forschungsplattformen als auch übergreifende konzeptionelle Arbeiten, Nutzerstudien und technische Experimente sowie die Analyse existierender Forschungsarbeiten

    A framework study on the use of immersive XR technologies in the cultural heritage domain

    Most cultural promotion and dissemination are nowadays performed through the digitization of heritage sites and museums, a necessary requirement to meet the new needs of the public. Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR), and Virtual Reality (VR) have the potential to improve the experience quality and educational effect of these sites by stimulating users’ senses in a more natural and vivid way. In this respect, head-mounted display (HMD) devices allow visitors to enhance the experience of cultural sites by digitizing information and integrating additional virtual cues about cultural artifacts, resulting in a more immersive experience that engages the visitor both physically and emotionally. This study contributes to the development and incorporation of AR, MR, and VR applications in the cultural heritage domain by providing an overview of relevant studies utilizing fully immersive systems, such as headsets and CAVE systems, emphasizing the advantages that they bring when compared to handheld devices. We propose a framework study to identify the key features of headset-based Extended Reality (XR) technologies used in the cultural heritage domain that boost immersion, sense of presence, and agency. Furthermore, we highlight core characteristics that favor the adoption of these systems over more traditional solutions (e.g., handheld devices), as well as unsolved issues that must be addressed to improve the guests’ experience and the appreciation of the cultural heritage. An extensive search of Google Scholar, Scopus, IEEE Xplore, ACM Digital Library, and Wiley Online Library databases was conducted, including papers published from January 2018 to September 2022. To improve review reporting, the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were used. Sixty-five papers met the inclusion criteria and were classified depending on the study’s purpose: education, entertainment, edutainment, touristic guidance systems, accessibility, visitor profiling, and management. Immersive cultural heritage systems allow visitors to feel completely immersed and present in the virtual environment, providing a stimulating and educational cultural experience that can improve the quality and learning purposes of cultural visits. Nonetheless, the analyzed studies revealed some limitations that must be faced to give a further impulse to the adoption of these technologies in the cultural heritage domain

    Tourism and beyond: Commodification of communist memoryscapes in Central and East Europe

    The aim of this dissertation is to shed light on the phenomenon of commodification of communist memoryscapes in Europe, exploring the main strategies and forms of urban and mnemonic re-branding of post-socialist capitals. Illuminating the variety of commercial solutions for dealing with “difficult” legacies of communism in Europe, the thesis aims to enhance our understanding of actors, processes and dynamics framing the contemporary engagement with communist urban heritage. Relying on grounded theory method, triangulated through multiple case study, participatory observation and netnography, the study examines patterns of convergence in spatial, mnemonic and narrative organisations of communist urban experiences. Elaborating commodification of (1) communist landmarks (iconic buildings), (2) suburban heritage (statues, parks), (3) underground spaces (communist bunkers) (4) cultural objects (museums of communism), (5) urban discourses (guided city tours) and (6) urban hospitality (communist restaurants), the analysis thus reveals different urban and narrative “commercial interventions” in post-communist urban landscape. Through the in-depth analysis of major communist museums, tours, landmarks, bunkers, peripheries and hospitality spaces across Central and East Europe, the dissertation accentuates similarities and divergences in contemporary discursive, spatial and commercial treatment of communism. It reveals particular mechanisms and outcomes of commodification, which emerges both as a strategy to “contain” communism and “re-pack” it for tourist consumption. Ultimately, the thesis argues that commodification of communism is the essential aspect of contemporary tourist narratives, curatorial practices and urban organisation of communist memoryscapes. It identifies and interprets urban, mnemonic, discursive and experiential manifestations of commodification, arguing that commercial engagement with communism fundamentally challenges the prevailing mechanisms for “coming to terms with the past.” It demonstrates that both suppliers and consumers of communist memoryscapes (co)produce and (co)participate in commodification process, most often through the interplay of tourism and entertainment industry. Finally, the study claims that commodification is reinforced through glocalisation, disneyfication and orientalisation of difficult heritage of communism, which further contribute to (re)locating specific urban context, (re)imagining particular urban history and generally changing the ways in which contemporary society values, exhibits and sources communism in urban space.El objetivo de esta disertación es arrojar luz sobre el fenómeno de la mercantilización de los paisajes de memoria comunistas en Europa, explorando las principales estrategias y formas de cambio de marca urbana y mnemotécnica de las capitales postsocialistas. Iluminando la variedad de soluciones comerciales para lidiar con los legados “difíciles” del comunismo en Europa, la tesis tiene como objetivo mejorar nuestra comprensión de los actores, procesos y dinámicas que enmarcan el compromiso contemporáneo con el patrimonio urbano comunista. Basándose en el método de la teoría fundamentada, triangulado a través del estudio de casos múltiples, la observación participativa y la netnografía, el estudio examina los patrones de convergencia en las organizaciones espaciales, mnemotécnicas y narrativas de las experiencias urbanas comunistas. Elaborando la mercantilización de (1) hitos comunistas (edificios icónicos), (2) patrimonio suburbano (estatuas, parques), (3) espacios subterráneos (bunkers comunistas) (4) objetos culturales (museos del comunismo), (5) discursos urbanos ( visitas guiadas por la ciudad) y (6) hospitalidad urbana (restaurantes comunistas), el análisis revela así diferentes “intervenciones comerciales” urbanas y narrativas en el paisaje urbano poscomunista. A través del análisis en profundidad de los principales museos, recorridos, puntos de referencia, búnkeres, periferias y espacios de hospitalidad comunistas en Europa Central y Oriental, la disertación acentúa las similitudes y divergencias en el tratamiento discursivo, espacial y comercial contemporáneo del comunismo. Revela mecanismos y resultados particulares de la mercantilización, que surge tanto como una estrategia para “contener” el comunismo como para “reempaquetarlo” para el consumo turístico. En última instancia, la tesis argumenta que la mercantilización del comunismo es el aspecto esencial de las narrativas turísticas contemporáneas, las practicas curatoriales y la organización urbana de los paisajes de memoria comunistas. Identifica e interpreta las manifestaciones urbanas, mnemotécnicas, discursivas y experienciales de la mercantilización, argumentando que el compromiso comercial con el comunismo desafía fundamentalmente los mecanismos predominantes para “llegar a un acuerdo con el pasado”. Demuestra que tanto los proveedores como los consumidores de paisajes de memoria comunistas (co)producen y (co)participan en el proceso de mercantilización, con mayor frecuencia a través de la interacción de la industria del turismo y elentretenimiento.     The city is the background of many people’s everyday lives. It is a space that contextualizes many of one’s experiences, memories, and ideas. Previous research has explored connections to place from a variety of perspectives (e.g., Proshansky, 1978; Relph, 1976; Tuan, 1977). The city has been found to play an important role in the everyday life, and through this, the construction of one’s identity – the urban identity (Lalli, 1992; Proshansky, 1978; Proshansky et al., 1983). This concept focuses on one’s experiences of and ideas about the city and its inhabitants. In recent decades, the city is something that is no longer only experienced offline but may also be experienced and negotiated online (e.g., Farman, 2015; Saker, 2017; Schwartz &amp; Halegoua, 2014; Wilken &amp; Humphreys, 2021; Yılmaz &amp; Kocabalkanlı, 2021). This is particularly relevant for the adolescent population, who, in this important developmental phase in which they find themselves (Erikson, 1968; Ferrer-Wreder &amp; Kroger, 2019; Marcia, 1993), are known to use the online space for identity construction (boyd, 2014; Granic et al., 2020). This process might be complicated by the superdiversity that nowadays characterizes various big cities (Vertovec, 2007). However, at the same time the city can be understood as a commonality of all kinds of different individuals in their everyday experience of place. As a space for identity construction and negotiation, social media therefore deserves our attention in light of urban identity construction, especially for adolescents who find themselves in the situation where they try to understand who they are and where they belong. Focusing on the super-diverse city of Rotterdam, this dissertation therefore aims to explore question how and to what extent Rotterdam adolescents’ social media use contribute to the creation and negotiation of their urban identity. To do so, the topic is addressed from a variety of angles and using several methods to create a broad understanding of the phenomenon.To be able to understand and contextualize the various aspects of online urban identity, one first needs to understand its various dimensions. In Chapter 2, this dissertation starts by outlining a conceptual model, the trans-spatial urban identity model, that builds on and adds to previous work on online urban identity. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing the layered hybridity and mutual influence of online and offline construction of urban identity. To provide a systematic way to understand urban identity, the model proposes several dimensions. It emphasizes the personal and social elements of urban identity, arguing that they are intertwined but both need to be actively considered. It also focuses on the difference between a user’s own expressions that they share and those that they consume from others. The Chapter also discusses a variety of unique affordances of the online environment that need to be considered in order to conduct research in this field. Finally, two cases are provided, focusing on consumption and production, that bring to light various relevant contexts and demonstrate the conceptual model’s value. The trans-spatial urban identity model provides a background to understand the focus points of the Chapters that follow.Chapter 3 sets out on a general exploration of urban identity and its presence in Rotterdam adolescents’ social media ecology by means of a survey among 324 young participants. It focuses on the relationship between various forms of social media engagement and urban identity. In this Chapter, particular attention is paid to differences between adolescents with or without a migration background in order to take into account the relevance of cultural diversity in the city, building on earlier research that emphasized the importance of a local identity to youngsters with a migrant background (e.g., Day &amp; Badou, 2019). Results show various correlations among and between social media use and urban identity, both its personal and social aspects. It was also found that (personal) urban identity was significantly higher among adolescents with a migrant background. Findings demonstrate the relevance of social media engagement in relation to urban identity, and implicate the importance of urban identity in the context of a culturally diverse city.In Chapter 4, this dissertation dives into the world of local influencers as everyday media idols for Rotterdam adolescents, and therefore focuses on what Rotterdam adolescents consume. Based on the local influencers reported in the survey study, this study explores the content of a number of these influencers in depth by means of a thematic analysis of their YouTube video content, and a network analysis of their affiliation network and related channel networks on the platform. Results show a plethora of ways in which the city appears in the content of these local influencers that could provide viewers with a recognizable framework for urban identity, including various local settings, fellow inhabitants, various cultural elements, its (super-) diversity, and references to one’s own presence in or identification with the city. The network structures further emphasized this affiliation with the city, through its various cultural themes, diversity, and local networks. The next two chapters move towards social media content production by means of a participatory action research study conducted with Rotterdam adolescents. In Chapter 5, the design of the study is explained in detail. TheChapter explains how a multiple-week video making course was created to explore urban identity construction practices during audio-visual social mediacontent production, which was carried out in collaboration with a local philanthropic initiative. The Chapter provides an illustrated approach towards designing and conducting a study in which both the process of and created materials are taken into account when investigating identity construction. Additionally, it provides an illustration of how media literacy and empowerment, as two concepts that were considered as potentially process-related results, were approached by means of conceptualizing its subcomponents as building blocks easily applicable to the study. The procedure and analysis are discussed in detail, and followed by a reflection on the lessons learned, including insights on value of collaborating, the active design for positive impact, the importance of flexibility, and the complexity of the dual role of being a researcher and teacher in the context of this study.Chapter 6 reports on the results of the PAR study. Combining a thematic and interpretative approach in interpreting the data, a thematic illustration was created of the PAR study with 10 participants. Not only did the study look at the created materials, but also at brainstorm materials, group discussions, brief interviews, and observations. The results describe how the city was presented in process as well as in the created materials (a video introducing oneself and a video about life in the city). Various spatial environments, symbolic elements, and social network elements are discussed inside and outside the videos. The predominantly personal, positive tone of the videos stood out, whereas negative and comparative expressions in videos seemed mostly absent. The presentation of the city mainly happened as a part of self-presentation. While participants identified themselves as inhabitants of the city, discussions showed various ideas existed about what characterizes inhabitants. Participants also reported ideas and behaviors outside of the course regarding urban related content, which emphasized the importance of self-presentation in urban identity related content, as well as a gap between ideas for videos and the ultimately created materials. Finally, the Chapter also provides empirical examples of how the building blocks of media literacy and empowerment could be observed in the course, and how they (inter)related to each other and to the (stimulation of) urban identity. This emphasizes the potential for applicability of this type of conceptual building blocks in future participatory action research. The dissertation is concluded by Chapter 7, where findings of the various studies are combined to draw more general conclusions, discuss limitations and opportunities, and see implications for research and society. It discusses the importance of broadening our understanding of the role of the online realm in urban identity construction, the unique findings for adolescents growing up in a trans-spatial environment both in terms of consumption and production, the relevance of online urban identity for living in a super-diverse city, and the practical and impactful implications of identity research. A discussion of limitations and related recommendations for future research include the focus on Rotterdam as a case study, the complexities of identity development and age, the need for a focus on participation, and the most important strengths and limitations of our mixed-method and multi-method approach. Recommendations for societal actors include the advice to use knowledge about online urban identity to strengthen a sense of belonging, make local social media influencers aware of their potential function as local role models, and the need for media literacy education to support a healthy and safe way of expressing urban identity online.<br/
