Organizational identity in the history of the Longy School of Music

Thesis (D.M.A.)--Boston UniversityThe Longy School of Music existed as an independent organization from 1915 until2012, when it was acquired by Bard College. Founded to provide vocational training in music, the Longy School soon expanded by adding preparatory studies for children and continuing studies for avocationallearners. The school struggled throughout much of its history to manage its multiple identities and gain consensus, from both internal and external stakeholders, on a fundamental question: "who are we as an organization?" The lack of clarity in organizational identity and the failure to adequately manage the resulting multiple identities meant that the Longy School consistently struggled to define itself. This situation was an impediment to a thriving institution fmancially, programmatically, and culturally. Toward the end ofthe Longy School's existence as an independent entity, the long-standing issues had culminated in significant financial shortfalls, faculty dissatisfaction and the introduction ofa faculty union, and the desire to seek a larger institution with which to merge. This complex crisis raises significant questions about how the school arrived at such a crossroads, and deeper understanding of the school's history oforganizational identity provides insight into these developments. The purpose of this study was to determine the history of the Longy School' s struggle to understand and manage its organizational identity - and how and why this dilemma had long-reaching consequences. Research questions that guided this inquiry included: 1) What was Georges Longy's original vision for the Longy School, how did this evolve during his tenure as director, and how did this shape the future organizational identity of the institution? 2) Who were the primary figures that helped shape the focus and mission of the school, and what did each of these leaders envision as the direction, strategy, mission, and future for the institution? 3) What implicit and explicit strategic plans for the school have existed, and how have these related to the development of the Longy School's organizational identity? 4) What were the major developments and changes in the curricula offered by the Longy School and what motivated these developments? 5) What were the perceptions of and expectations for the Longy School from both internal and external constituents

Although Japanese studies in Spain started somewhat late, its development over the last thirty years within Spanish universities has been remarkable. Eight universities currently offer study programs in East Asian studies, including Japanese studies, and a similar number are carrying out research projects. Japanese studies has expanded from the humanities to the social sciences, and also within research groups, centers, and universities. However, the issue of institutional support and funding poses challenges in the long term. This article addresses the research and teaching of Japanese studies in Spain and provides an overview of a growing academic field

This study traces and reconstructs the lived experience and political practice of exile in Mexico City between 1939 and 1959 by using a dual approach towards social topography as well as praxeological analysis: On the one hand, the social topography of the city must play an important part in reconstructing patterns of residence, sociability, and political association. On the other, the subjective experiences of European political refugees arriving in the Mexican capital, their encounter with the New World, and the lived reality of their social and political practice equally deserves full analytical attention in order to establish the processes of gradual appropriation of the urban environment by the European communities of exile. This study aims at presenting a coherent analysis of social and political practice in exile embedded in its urban topography, relating praxeological aspects of political ideology and nationality to their topographical manifestation, and establishing their historical meaning and significance out of the interplay of spaces and practices

No âmbito internacional. This is a research, which includes bibliometric study to analyze the characteristics of books and identified rare books as archival in the collection of the “Maria Beatriz Nascimento” Library of the National Archive. The general purpose is to map these characteristics allowing a better understanding of this fraction of the collection. Data collection was based on the library's online catalog. Bibliometrics was incorporated as methodology, through the technique of analysis of bibliographic references of the referred catalog. Rankings related to nationality, countries of publication, places of publication, authorship, publishers, year, reprints and translations of the works are presented. The results indicate almost a tie between foreign and Brazilian works, since 50.45% of the books are international and 49.20% are national. Regarding the countries of publication, the highest values are associated to Brazil (48.94%) and France (10.35%). The main cities where the books were published are Rio de Janeiro (20.58%) and Paris (9.36%). Regarding authorship, 1,679 works (48.68%) were published by single authorship. The National Archive has the largest number of publications, with 81 books (2.35%), followed by the Archives Nationales of France, with 47 publications (1.36%). Similarly, in case of editors, the National Archive headed with 5.47%, followed by IPHAN (2.95%). The years with the highest occurrence of publication were 1997 and 1999, with 2.67% each. It was noted that 54 works (30.51%) were translated from the source language to another language. The topicality of the work can be evidenced with copies that had second and third editions, as well as reviewed, expanded, updated, revised and reprinted editions, which together represented almost 70% of this fraction, totaling 177 works. In general, the data obtained show that Brazil has been outstanding in strengthening the archival literature in the country, where Rio de Janeiro is the main origin. At international scope. France stands out, which supports the understanding of this country in the archival literature present in the studied collection. Archival institutions are the protagonists of this literature, both as author and editor, for their engagement in the construction and development of Archiving knowledge
