Names, addresses and identities in ambient networks
Ambient Networks interconnect independent realms that may use different local network technologies and may belong to different administrative or legal entities. At the core of these advanced internetworking concepts is a flexible naming architecture based on dynamic indirections between names, addresses and identities. This paper gives an overview of the connectivity abstractions of Ambient Networks and then describes its naming architecture in detail, comparing and contrasting them to other related next-generation network architectures
Distributed and Load-Adaptive Self Configuration in Sensor Networks
Proactive self-configuration is crucial for MANETs such as sensor networks, as these are often deployed in hostile environments and are ad hoc in nature. The dynamic architecture of the network is monitored by exchanging so-called Network State Beacons (NSBs) between key network nodes. The Beacon Exchange rate and the network state define both the time and nature of a proactive action to combat network performance degradation at a time of crisis. It is thus essential to optimize these parameters for the dynamic load profile of the network. This paper presents a novel distributed adaptive optimization Beacon Exchange selection model which considers distributed network load for energy efficient monitoring and proactive reconfiguration of the network. The results show an improvement of 70% in throughput, while maintaining a guaranteed quality-of- service for a small control-traffic overhead
Regularized Evolutionary Algorithm for Dynamic Neural Topology Search
Designing neural networks for object recognition requires considerable
architecture engineering. As a remedy, neuro-evolutionary network architecture
search, which automatically searches for optimal network architectures using
evolutionary algorithms, has recently become very popular. Although very
effective, evolutionary algorithms rely heavily on having a large population of
individuals (i.e., network architectures) and is therefore memory expensive. In
this work, we propose a Regularized Evolutionary Algorithm with low memory
footprint to evolve a dynamic image classifier. In details, we introduce novel
custom operators that regularize the evolutionary process of a micro-population
of 10 individuals. We conduct experiments on three different digits datasets
(MNIST, USPS, SVHN) and show that our evolutionary method obtains competitive
results with the current state-of-the-art
A management architecture for active networks
In this paper we present an architecture for network and applications management, which is based on the Active Networks paradigm and shows the advantages of network programmability. The stimulus to develop this architecture arises from an actual need to manage a cluster of active nodes, where it is often required to redeploy network assets and modify nodes connectivity. In our architecture, a remote front-end of the managing entity allows the operator to design new network topologies, to check the status of the nodes and to configure them. Moreover, the proposed framework allows to explore an active network, to monitor the active applications, to query each node and to install programmable traps. In order to take advantage of the Active Networks technology, we introduce active SNMP-like MIBs and agents, which are dynamic and programmable. The programmable management agents make tracing distributed applications a feasible task. We propose a general framework that can inter-operate with any active execution environment. In this framework, both the manager and the monitor front-ends communicate with an active node (the Active Network Access Point) through the XML language. A gateway service performs the translation of the queries from XML to an active packet language and injects the code in the network. We demonstrate the implementation of an active network gateway for PLAN (Packet Language for Active Networks) in a forty active nodes testbed. Finally, we discuss an application of the active management architecture to detect the causes of network failures by tracing network events in time
