    Multi-domain active sound control and noise shielding

    This paper describes an active sound control methodology based on difference potentials. The main feature of this methodology is its ability to automatically preserve “wanted” sound within a domain while canceling “unwanted” noise from outside the domain. This method of preservation of the wanted sounds by active shielding control is demonstrated with various broadband and realistic sound sources such as human voice and music in multiple domains in a one-dimensional enclosure. Unlike many other conventional active control methods, the proposed approach does not require the explicit characterization of the wanted sound to be preserved. The controls are designed based on the measurements of the total field on the boundaries of the shielded domain only, which is allowed to be multiply connected. The method is tested in a variety of experimental cases. The typical attenuation of the unwanted noise is found to be about 20 dB over a large area of the shielded domain and the original wanted sound field is preserved with errors of around 1 dB and below through a broad frequency range up to 1 kHz. © 2011 Acoustical Society of Americ

    Wind tunnel evaluation of YF-12 inlet response to internal airflow disturbances with and without control

    The response of terminal-shock position and static pressures in the subsonic duct of a YF-12 aircraft flight-hardware inlet to perturbations in simulated engine corrected airflow were obtained with and without inlet control. Frequency response data, obtained with inlet controls inactive, indicated the general nature of the inherent inlet dynamics, assisted in the design of controls, and provided a baseline reference for responses with active controls. All the control laws were implemented by means of a digital computer that could be programmed to behave like the flight inlet's existing analog control. The experimental controls were designed using an analytical optimization technique. The capabilities of the controls were limited primarily by the actuation hardware. The experimental controls provided somewhat better attenuation of terminal shock excursions than did the YF-13 inlet control. Controls using both the forward and aft bypass systems also provided somewhat better attenuation than those using just the forward bypass. The main advantage of using both bypasses is in the greater control flexibility that is achieved

    Reduction of fan noise bymeans of (circular) side-resonators; theory and experiment

    One of the main noise sources in computers are the cooling fans. An important aspect of the noise they generate is tonal noise produced at the rotational frequency of the fan, the blade passing frequency (BPF), and its higher harmonics. Previous research pointed out that so-called side resonators can be applied successfully to reduce this tonal noise. A variety of side resonator geometries is available. A model describing viscothermal wave propagation in a circular side-resonator and the connected duct and the preliminary results of a parameter study of that model where presented previously. The experimental verification of the model is presented here

    Aircraft interior noise reduction by alternate resonance tuning

    The focus is on a noise control method which considers aircraft fuselages lined with panels alternately tuned to frequencies above and below the frequency that must be attenuated. An interior noise reduction called alternate resonance tuning (ART) is described both theoretically and experimentally. Problems dealing with tuning single paneled wall structures for optimum noise reduction using the ART methodology are presented, and three theoretical problems are analyzed. The first analysis is a three dimensional, full acoustic solution for tuning a panel wall composed of repeating sections with four different panel tunings within that section, where the panels are modeled as idealized spring-mass-damper systems. The second analysis is a two dimensional, full acoustic solution for a panel geometry influenced by the effect of a propagating external pressure field such as that which might be associated with propeller passage by a fuselage. To reduce the analysis complexity, idealized spring-mass-damper panels are again employed. The final theoretical analysis presents the general four panel problem with real panel sections, where the effect of higher structural modes is discussed. Results from an experimental program highlight real applications of the ART concept and show the effectiveness of the tuning on real structures

    Numerical and Experimental Validation of Active Vibration Control Logic Performance of a Hybrid Noise Control-Based Brick

    The limitations of active noise control (ANC) in coping with low frequencies and of passive noise control (PNC) in coping with middle-high frequencies are objects of research that present the potentialities of hybrid noise control (HBC). It aims at combining both of the behaviours by broadening the range of absorbed frequencies. Among the several application fields, the AEC (architecture, engineering, and construction) market can take advantage for those applications in which the noise conditions are caused by sound sources that tune in a broad frequencies range. In this frame, the paper describes the numerical and experimental validation of the active behaviour of an under-development project of a hybrid noise control-based acoustic bricks. The latter intends to embed the potentialities of active vibrational noise control (AVC) and passive destructive interference (PDI) in a unique design of an easy-to-mount, 3D-printed, customisable smart acoustic blocks. Active vibration control, the object of this paper, is provided by a 5-mm thick aluminium circular plate with an attached piezoelectric patch. The vibration of the latter, depending on a specific control law, defines the vibration of the plate itself achieving an abatement of the reflection coefficient. Through mathematical modelling and tests in an impedance tube, the results show that the control logic can reach an average abatement of the reflection coefficient of 82% in the frequency range 144-1007 Hz

    Estimation-based synthesis of H∞-optimal adaptive FIR filtersfor filtered-LMS problems

    This paper presents a systematic synthesis procedure for H∞-optimal adaptive FIR filters in the context of an active noise cancellation (ANC) problem. An estimation interpretation of the adaptive control problem is introduced first. Based on this interpretation, an H∞ estimation problem is formulated, and its finite horizon prediction (filtering) solution is discussed. The solution minimizes the maximum energy gain from the disturbances to the predicted (filtered) estimation error and serves as the adaptation criterion for the weight vector in the adaptive FIR filter. We refer to this adaptation scheme as estimation-based adaptive filtering (EBAF). We show that the steady-state gain vector in the EBAF algorithm approaches that of the classical (normalized) filtered-X LMS algorithm. The error terms, however, are shown to be different. Thus, these classical algorithms can be considered to be approximations of our algorithm. We examine the performance of the proposed EBAF algorithm (both experimentally and in simulation) in an active noise cancellation problem of a one-dimensional (1-D) acoustic duct for both narrowband and broadband cases. Comparisons to the results from a conventional filtered-LMS (FxLMS) algorithm show faster convergence without compromising steady-state performance and/or robustness of the algorithm to feedback contamination of the reference signal

    The NASA Langley Laminar-Flow-Control Experiment on a Swept Supercritical Airfoil: Basic Results for Slotted Configuration

    The effects of Mach number and Reynolds number on the experimental surface pressure distributions and transition patterns for a large chord, swept supercritical airfoil incorporating an active Laminar Flow Control suction system with spanwise slots are presented. The experiment was conducted in the Langley 8 foot Transonic Pressure Tunnel. Also included is a discussion of the influence of model/tunnel liner interactions on the airfoil pressure distribution. Mach number was varied from 0.40 to 0.82 at two chord Reynolds numbers, 10 and 20 x 1,000,000, and Reynolds number was varied from 10 to 20 x 1,000,000 at the design Mach number
