    A Double Fragmentation Approach for Improving Virtual Primary Key-Based Watermark Synchronization

    Relational data watermarking techniques using virtual primary key schemes try to avoid compromising watermark detection due to the deletion or replacement of the relation's primary key. Nevertheless, these techniques face the limitations that bring high redundancy of the generated set of virtual primary keys, which often compromises the quality of the embedded watermark. As a solution to this problem, this paper proposes double fragmentation of the watermark by using the existing redundancy in the set of virtual primary keys. This way, we guarantee the right identification of the watermark despite the deletion of any of the attributes of the relation. The experiments carried out to validate our proposal show an increment between 81.04% and 99.05% of detected marks with respect to previous solutions found in the literature. Furthermore, we found out that our approach takes advantage of the redundancy present in the set of virtual primary keys. Concerning the computational complexity of the solution, we performed a set of scalability tests that show the linear behavior of our approach with respect to the processes runtime and the number of tuples involved, making it feasible to use no matter the amount of data to be protected

    Reducing Multiple Occurrences of Meta-Mark Selection in Relational Data Watermarking

    Contrary to multimedia data watermarking approaches, it is not recommended that relational data watermarking techniques consider sequential selection for marks in the watermark and embedding locations in the protected digital asset. Indeed, considering the database relations' elements, i.e., tuples and attributes, when watermarking techniques are based on sequential processes, watermark detection can be easily compromised by performing subset reverse order attacks. As a result, attackers can obtain owner evidence-free high-quality data since no data modifications for mark removing are required for the malicious operation to succeed. A standard solution to this problem has been pseudo-random selection, which often leads to choosing the same marks multiple times, and ignoring others, thus compromising the embedding of the entire watermark. This work proposes an engine that contributes to controlling marks' recurrent selection, allowing marks excluded by previous approaches to be considered and detected with 100% accuracy. The experiments performed show a dramatic improvement of the embedded watermark quality when the proposed engine is included in watermarking techniques' architecture. They also provide evidence that this proposal leads to higher resilience against common malicious operations such as subset and superset attacks

    GUMSMP: a scalable parallel Haskell implementation

    The most widely available high performance platforms today are hierarchical, with shared memory leaves, e.g. clusters of multi-cores, or NUMA with multiple regions. The Glasgow Haskell Compiler (GHC) provides a number of parallel Haskell implementations targeting different parallel architectures. In particular, GHC-SMP supports shared memory architectures, and GHC-GUM supports distributed memory machines. Both implementations use different, but related, runtime system (RTS) mechanisms and achieve good performance. A specialised RTS for the ubiquitous hierarchical architectures is lacking. This thesis presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of a new parallel Haskell RTS, GUMSMP, that combines shared and distributed memory mechanisms to exploit hierarchical architectures more effectively. The design evaluates a variety of design choices and aims to efficiently combine scalable distributed memory parallelism, using a virtual shared heap over a hierarchical architecture, with low-overhead shared memory parallelism on shared memory nodes. Key design objectives in realising this system are to prefer local work, and to exploit mostly passive load distribution with pre-fetching. Systematic performance evaluation shows that the automatic hierarchical load distribution policies must be carefully tuned to obtain good performance. We investigate the impact of several policies including work pre-fetching, favouring inter-node work distribution, and spark segregation with different export and select policies. We present the performance results for GUMSMP, demonstrating good scalability for a set of benchmarks on up to 300 cores. Moreover, our policies provide performance improvements of up to a factor of 1.5 compared to GHC- GUM. The thesis provides a performance evaluation of distributed and shared heap implementations of parallel Haskell on a state-of-the-art physical shared memory NUMA machine. The evaluation exposes bottlenecks in memory management, which limit scalability beyond 25 cores. We demonstrate that GUMSMP, that combines both distributed and shared heap abstractions, consistently outper- forms the shared memory GHC-SMP on seven benchmarks by a factor of 3.3 on average. Specifically, we show that the best results are obtained when shar- ing memory only within a single NUMA region, and using distributed memory system abstractions across the regions

    Fairness in a data center

    Existing data centers utilize several networking technologies in order to handle the performance requirements of different workloads. Maintaining diverse networking technologies increases complexity and is not cost effective. This results in the current trend to converge all traffic into a single networking fabric. Ethernet is both cost-effective and ubiquitous, and as such it has been chosen as the technology of choice for the converged fabric. However, traditional Ethernet does not satisfy the needs of all traffic workloads, for the most part, due to its lossy nature and, therefore, has to be enhanced to allow for full convergence. The resulting technology, Data Center Bridging (DCB), is a new set of standards defined by the IEEE to make Ethernet lossless even in the presence of congestion. As with any new networking technology, it is critical to analyze how the different protocols within DCB interact with each other as well as how each protocol interacts with existing technologies in other layers of the protocol stack. This dissertation presents two novel schemes that address critical issues in DCB networks: fairness with respect to packet lengths and fairness with respect to flow control and bandwidth utilization. The Deficit Round Robin with Adaptive Weight Control (DRR-AWC) algorithm actively monitors the incoming streams and adjusts the scheduling weights of the outbound port. The algorithm was implemented on a real DCB switch and shown to increase fairness for traffic consisting of mixed-length packets. Targeted Priority-based Flow Control (TPFC) provides a hop-by-hop flow control mechanism that restricts the flow of aggressor streams while allowing victim streams to continue unimpeded. Two variants of the targeting mechanism within TPFC are presented and their performance evaluated through simulation

    Special oils for halal and safe cosmetics

    Three types of non conventional oils were extracted, analyzed and tested for toxicity. Date palm kernel oil (DPKO), mango kernel oil (MKO) and Ramputan seed oil (RSO). Oil content for tow cultivars of dates Deglect Noor and Moshkan was 9.67% and 7.30%, respectively. The three varieties of mango were found to contain about 10% oil in average. The red yellow types of Ramputan were found to have 11 and 14% oil, respectively. The phenolic compounds in DPKO, MKO and RSO were 0.98, 0.88 and 0.78 mg/ml Gallic acid equivalent, respectively. Oils were analyzed for their fatty acid composition and they are rich in oleic acid C18:1 and showed the presence of (dodecanoic acid) lauric acid C12:0, which reported to appear some antimicrobial activities. All extracted oils, DPKO, MKO and RSO showed no toxic effect using prime shrimp bioassay. Since these oils are stable, melt at skin temperature, have good lubricity and are great source of essential fatty acids; they could be used as highly moisturizing, cleansing and nourishing oils because of high oleic acid content. They are ideal for use in such halal cosmetics such as Science, Engineering and Technology 75 skin care and massage, hair-care, soap and shampoo products
