OGSA first impressions: a case study re-engineering a scientific applicationwith the open grid services architecture
We present a case study of our experience re-engineeringa scientific application using the Open Grid Services Architecture(OGSA), a new specification for developing Gridapplications using web service technologies such as WSDLand SOAP. During the last decade, UCL?s Chemistry departmenthas developed a computational approach for predictingthe crystal structures of small molecules. However,each search involves running large iterations of computationallyexpensive calculations and currently takes a fewmonths to perform. Making use of early implementationsof the OGSA specification we have wrapped the Fortranbinaries into OGSI-compliant service interfaces to exposethe existing scientific application as a set of loosely coupledweb services. We show how the OGSA implementationfacilitates the distribution of such applications across alarge network, radically improving performance of the systemthrough parallel CPU capacity, coordinated resourcemanagement and automation of the computational process.We discuss the difficulties that we encountered turning Fortranexecutables into OGSA services and delivering a robust,scalable system. One unusual aspect of our approachis the way we transfer input and output data for the Fortrancodes. Instead of employing a file transfer service wetransform the XML encoded data in the SOAP message tonative file format, where possible using XSLT stylesheets.We also discuss a computational workflow service that enablesusers to distribute and manage parts of the computationalprocess across different clusters and administrativedomains. We examine how our experience re-engineeringthe polymorph prediction application led to this approachand to what extent our efforts have succeeded
Search and Discovery Tools for Astronomical On-line Resources and Services
A growing number of astronomical resources and data or information services
are made available through the Internet. However valuable information is
frequently hidden in a deluge of non-pertinent or non up-to-date documents. At
a first level, compilations of astronomical resources provide help for
selecting relevant sites. Combining yellow-page services and meta-databases of
active pointers may be an efficient solution to the data retrieval problem.
Responses generated by submission of queries to a set of heterogeneous
resources are difficult to merge or cross-match, because different data
providers generally use different data formats: new endeavors are under way to
tackle this problem. We review the technical challenges involved in trying to
provide general search and discovery tools, and to integrate them through upper

ImageSieve: Exploratory search of museum archives with named entity-based faceted browsing
Over the last few years, faceted search emerged as an attractive alternative to the traditional "text box" search and has become one of the standard ways of interaction on many e-commerce sites. However, these applications of faceted search are limited to domains where the objects of interests have already been classified along several independent dimensions, such as price, year, or brand. While automatic approaches to generate faceted search interfaces were proposed, it is not yet clear to what extent the automatically-produced interfaces will be useful to real users, and whether their quality can match or surpass their manually-produced predecessors. The goal of this paper is to introduce an exploratory search interface called ImageSieve, which shares many features with traditional faceted browsing, but can function without the use of traditional faceted metadata. ImageSieve uses automatically extracted and classified named entities, which play important roles in many domains (such as news collections, image archives, etc.). We describe one specific application of ImageSieve for image search. Here, named entities extracted from the descriptions of the retrieved images are used to organize a faceted browsing interface, which then helps users to make sense of and further explore the retrieved images. The results of a user study of ImageSieve demonstrate that a faceted search system based on named entities can help users explore large collections and find relevant information more effectively
Contextualization of topics - browsing through terms, authors, journals and cluster allocations
This paper builds on an innovative Information Retrieval tool, Ariadne. The
tool has been developed as an interactive network visualization and browsing
tool for large-scale bibliographic databases. It basically allows to gain
insights into a topic by contextualizing a search query (Koopman et al., 2015).
In this paper, we apply the Ariadne tool to a far smaller dataset of 111,616
documents in astronomy and astrophysics. Labeled as the Berlin dataset, this
data have been used by several research teams to apply and later compare
different clustering algorithms. The quest for this team effort is how to
delineate topics. This paper contributes to this challenge in two different
ways. First, we produce one of the different cluster solution and second, we
use Ariadne (the method behind it, and the interface - called LittleAriadne) to
display cluster solutions of the different group members. By providing a tool
that allows the visual inspection of the similarity of article clusters
produced by different algorithms, we present a complementary approach to other
possible means of comparison. More particular, we discuss how we can - with
LittleAriadne - browse through the network of topical terms, authors, journals
and cluster solutions in the Berlin dataset and compare cluster solutions as

What can be done with the Semantic Web? An overview of Watson-based applications
Thanks to the huge efforts deployed in the community for creating, building and generating semantic information for the Semantic Web, large amounts of machine processable knowledge are now openly available. Watson is an infrastructure component for the Semantic Web, a gateway that provides the necessary functions to support applications in using the Semantic Web. In this paper, we describe a number of applications relying on Watson, with the purpose of demonstrating what can be achieved with the Semantic Web nowadays and what sort of new, smart and useful features can be derived from the exploitation of this large, distributed and heterogeneous base of semantic information
Adaptive Information Cluster at Dublin City University
The Adaptive Information Cluster (AIC) is a collaboration between Dublin City University and University College Dublin, and in the AIC at DCU, we investigate and develop as one stream of our research activities, various content analysis tools that can automatically index and structure video information. This includes movies or CCTV footage and the motivation is to support useful searching and browsing features for the envisaged end-users of such systems. We bring in the HCI perspective to this highly-technically-oriented research by brainstorming, generating scenarios, sketching and prototyping the user-interfaces to the resulting video retrieval systems we develop, and we conduct usability studies to better understand the usage and opinions of such systems so as to guide the future direction of our technological research
Culture and e-commerce: An exploration of the perceptions and attitudes of Egyptian internet users
This paper examines the perceptions and attitudes that Egyptian users hold towards electronic shopping sites. Internet sites are globally available, opening up huge potential markets for online retailers. However, it remains unclear whether sites designed for the US or European markets will be acceptable in other cultures. This paper describes an exploratory card sorting study conducted with Egyptian consumers. The study was designed to examine the e-commerce interface features that are most salient to this user group and to explore how these relate to user intentions to engage in internet shopping. The results support the role of site familiarity in predicting purchase intentions within this cultural setting
