    Architecture for Cooperative Prefetching in P2P Video-on- Demand System

    Most P2P VoD schemes focused on service architectures and overlays optimization without considering segments rarity and the performance of prefetching strategies. As a result, they cannot better support VCRoriented service in heterogeneous environment having clients using free VCR controls. Despite the remarkable popularity in VoD systems, there exist no prior work that studies the performance gap between different prefetching strategies. In this paper, we analyze and understand the performance of different prefetching strategies. Our analytical characterization brings us not only a better understanding of several fundamental tradeoffs in prefetching strategies, but also important insights on the design of P2P VoD system. On the basis of this analysis, we finally proposed a cooperative prefetching strategy called "cooching". In this strategy, the requested segments in VCR interactivities are prefetched into session beforehand using the information collected through gossips.     Modeling and Evaluation of Multisource Streaming Strategies in P2P VoD Systems

    In recent years, multimedia content distribution has largely been moved to the Internet, inducing broadcasters, operators and service providers to upgrade with large expenses their infrastructures. In this context, streaming solutions that rely on user devices such as set-top boxes (STBs) to offload dedicated streaming servers are particularly appropriate. In these systems, contents are usually replicated and scattered over the network established by STBs placed at users' home, and the video-on-demand (VoD) service is provisioned through streaming sessions established among neighboring STBs following a Peer-to-Peer fashion. Up to now the majority of research works have focused on the design and optimization of content replicas mechanisms to minimize server costs. The optimization of replicas mechanisms has been typically performed either considering very crude system performance indicators or analyzing asymptotic behavior. In this work, instead, we propose an analytical model that complements previous works providing fairly accurate predictions of system performance (i.e., blocking probability). Our model turns out to be a highly scalable, flexible, and extensible tool that may be helpful both for designers and developers to efficiently predict the effect of system design choices in large scale STB-VoD system

    An autonomic delivery framework for HTTP adaptive streaming in multicast-enabled multimedia access networks

    The consumption of multimedia services over HTTP-based delivery mechanisms has recently gained popularity due to their increased flexibility and reliability. Traditional broadcast TV channels are now offered over the Internet, in order to support Live TV for a broad range of consumer devices. Moreover, service providers can greatly benefit from offering external live content (e. g., YouTube, Hulu) in a managed way. Recently, HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) techniques have been proposed in which video clients dynamically adapt their requested video quality level based on the current network and device state. Unlike linear TV, traditional HTTP- and HAS-based video streaming services depend on unicast sessions, leading to a network traffic load proportional to the number of multimedia consumers. In this paper we propose a novel HAS-based video delivery architecture, which features intelligent multicasting and caching in order to decrease the required bandwidth considerably in a Live TV scenario. Furthermore we discuss the autonomic selection of multicasted content to support Video on Demand (VoD) sessions. Experiments were conducted on a large scale and realistic emulation environment and compared with a traditional HAS-based media delivery setup using only unicast connections

    Control evaluation in a LVoD system based on a peer-to-peer multicast scheme

    Providing Quality of Service (QoS) in video on demand systems (VoD) is a challenging problem. In this paper, we analyse the fault tolerance on a P2P multicast delivery scheme, called Patch Collaboration Manager / Multicast Channel Distributed Branching (PCM/MCDB) [13]. This scheme decentralizes the delivery process between clients and scales the VoD server performance. PCM/MCDB synchronizes a group of clients in order to create local network channels to replace on-going multicast channels from the VoD server. Using the P2P paradigm supposes facing the challenge of how often peers connect and disconnect from the system. To address this problem, a centralized mechanism is able to replace the failed client. We evaluate the failure management process of the centralized scheme in terms of the overhead injected into the network and analyse the applicability of a distributed approach to managing the process. Analytical models are developed for centralized and distributed approaches. Their behaviour are compared in order to evaluate whether the distributed scheme can improve the fault management process, in terms of reducing server load and generating better scalability.Proporcionar Calidad de Servicio (QoS) en sistemas de Vídeo bajo Demanda (VoD) es un problema desafiador. En este artículo, analizamos la tolerancia a fallos en un esquema de envío de informaciones, basado en comunicaciones multicast y colaboraciones P2P, denominado PCM/MCDB [13]. El esquema descentraliza el proceso de envío de información entre los clientes y escala las prestaciones del servidor de VoD. PCM/MCDB sincroniza un grupo de clientes con objeto de crear canales de redes locales para reemplazar canales multicast en curso del servidor. La aplicación del paradigma P2P supone cómo afrontar el problema de la conexión y desconexión de clientes del sistema. Para resolver este problema, un mecanismo centralizado es capaz de reemplazar el cliente fallido. En el trabajo evaluamos el proceso de gestión de fallos del esquema centralizado en términos del flujo de informaciones insertado en la red y analizamos la aplicabilidad de un esquema distribuido para el proceso de gestión.     Video-on-Demand over Internet: a survey of existing systems and solutions

    Video-on-Demand is a service where movies are delivered to distributed users with low delay and free interactivity. The traditional client/server architecture experiences scalability issues to provide video streaming services, so there have been many proposals of systems, mostly based on a peer-to-peer or on a hybrid server/peer-to-peer solution, to solve this issue. This work presents a survey of the currently existing or proposed systems and solutions, based upon a subset of representative systems, and defines selection criteria allowing to classify these systems. These criteria are based on common questions such as, for example, is it video-on-demand or live streaming, is the architecture based on content delivery network, peer-to-peer or both, is the delivery overlay tree-based or mesh-based, is the system push-based or pull-based, single-stream or multi-streams, does it use data coding, and how do the clients choose their peers. Representative systems are briefly described to give a summarized overview of the proposed solutions, and four ones are analyzed in details.     Integrate Airtime Metric and Geocast over P2P-Based VoD Streaming Cache

    [[abstract]]Peer-to-peer based systems have been widely proposed to provide the Video-on-Demand (VoD) service on the Internet in recent years.With the development of mobile networks, we proposed a suitable VoD system for mobile networks, in which peers are classified into groups and the backbone networks are established so that peers in the same group can share and transmit the streaming videos through the backbone networks. Further, mobile nodes that are not located at the backbone networks can receive the streaming videos through the Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs). Through our path selection mechanism, peers can route faster and the system will be load-balancing. By considering the influence of the locality to mobile nodes, we delimit the new range of WMNs.
