    Implementing Database Coordination in P2P Networks

    We are interested in the interaction of databases in Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks. In this paper we propose a new solution for P2P databases, that we call database coordination. We see coordination as managing semantic interdependencies among databases at runtime. We propose a data coordination model where the notions of Interest Groups and Acquaintances play the most crucial role. Interest groups support the formation of peers according to data models they have in common; and acquaintances allow for peers inter-operation. Finally, we present an architecture supporting database coordination and show how it is implemented on top of JXTA

    The Reputation, Opinion, Credibility and Quality (ROCQ) Scheme

    An implicit assumption of trust in the participants is at the basis of most Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks. However, in practice, not all participants are benign or cooperative. Identifying such peers is critical to the smooth and effective functioning of a P2P network. In this paper, we present the ROCQ mechanism, a reputation-based trust management system that computes the trustworthiness of peers on the basis of transaction-based feedback. The ROCQ model combines four parameters: Reputation (R) or a peer's global trust rating, Opinion (O) formed by a peer's first-hand interactions, Credibility (C) of a reporting peer and Quality (Q) or the confidence a reporting peer puts on the judgement it provides. We then present a distributed implementation of our scheme over FreePastry, a structured P2P network. Experimental results considering different models for malicious behavior indicate the contexts in which the ROCQ scheme performs better than existing schemes

    A Taxonomy of Data Grids for Distributed Data Sharing, Management and Processing

    Data Grids have been adopted as the platform for scientific communities that need to share, access, transport, process and manage large data collections distributed worldwide. They combine high-end computing technologies with high-performance networking and wide-area storage management techniques. In this paper, we discuss the key concepts behind Data Grids and compare them with other data sharing and distribution paradigms such as content delivery networks, peer-to-peer networks and distributed databases. We then provide comprehensive taxonomies that cover various aspects of architecture, data transportation, data replication and resource allocation and scheduling. Finally, we map the proposed taxonomy to various Data Grid systems not only to validate the taxonomy but also to identify areas for future exploration. Through this taxonomy, we aim to categorise existing systems to better understand their goals and their methodology. This would help evaluate their applicability for solving similar problems. This taxonomy also provides a "gap analysis" of this area through which researchers can potentially identify new issues for investigation. Finally, we hope that the proposed taxonomy and mapping also helps to provide an easy way for new practitioners to understand this complex area of research.Comment: 46 pages, 16 figures, Technical Repor

    Peer to Peer Information Retrieval: An Overview

    Peer-to-peer technology is widely used for file sharing. In the past decade a number of prototype peer-to-peer information retrieval systems have been developed. Unfortunately, none of these have seen widespread real- world adoption and thus, in contrast with file sharing, information retrieval is still dominated by centralised solutions. In this paper we provide an overview of the key challenges for peer-to-peer information retrieval and the work done so far. We want to stimulate and inspire further research to overcome these challenges. This will open the door to the development and large-scale deployment of real-world peer-to-peer information retrieval systems that rival existing centralised client-server solutions in terms of scalability, performance, user satisfaction and freedom

    Data Management in the APPA System

    International audienceCombining Grid and P2P technologies can be exploited to provide high-level data sharing in large-scale distributed environments. However, this combination must deal with two hard problems: the scale of the network and the dynamic behavior of the nodes. In this paper, we present our solution in APPA (Atlas Peer-to-Peer Architecture), a data management system with high-level services for building large-scale distributed applications. We focus on data availability and data discovery which are two main requirements for implementing large-scale Grids. We have validated APPA's services through a combination of experimentation over Grid5000, which is a very large Grid experimental platform, and simulation using SimJava. The results show very good performance in terms of communication cost and response time
