    A Distributed Algorithm for Bandwidth Allocation in Stable Ad Hoc Networks

    We propose a distributed algorithm for allocating bandwidth in stable ad hoc networks. After having discussed the problem of bandwidth allocation in such networks, we define a sequence of feasible solutions to this problem. This sequence has the property to be an increasing sequence in terms of overall used bandwidth. After a theoretical analysis of the sequence, we design a distributed algorithm based on this sequence. We test our algorithm by simulations on different topologies like chains, rings, meshes and geometric random graphs.We compare our solutions with the optimal solution in terms of global bandwidth allocation that presents the smallest standard deviation and with the the fairest solution regarding to max-min fairness. The simulations show that the global used bandwidth is less than 25%25\% from optimality in the worst case and the standard deviation is the smallest of the three tested solutions

    Distributed QoS Guarantees for Realtime Traffic in Ad Hoc Networks

    In this paper, we propose a new cross-layer framework, named QPART ( QoS br>rotocol for Adhoc Realtime Traffic), which provides QoS guarantees to real-time multimedia applications for wireless ad hoc networks. By adapting the contention window sizes at the MAC layer, QPART schedules packets of flows according to their unique QoS requirements. QPART implements priority-based admission control and conflict resolution to ensure that the requirements of admitted realtime flows is smaller than the network capacity. The novelty of QPART is that it is robust to mobility and variances in channel capacity and imposes no control message overhead on the network

    In this paper we analytically propose an alternative approach to achieve better fairness in scheduling mechanisms which could provide better quality of service particularly for real time application. Our proposal oppose the allocation of the bandwidth which adopted by all previous scheduling mechanism. It rather adopt the opposition approach be proposing the notion of Maxmin-charge which fairly distribute the congestion.     CA-AQM: Channel-Aware Active Queue Management for Wireless Networks

    In a wireless network, data transmission suffers from varied signal strengths and channel bit error rates. To ensure successful packet reception under different channel conditions, automatic bit rate control schemes are implemented to adjust the transmission bit rates based on the perceived channel conditions. This leads to a wireless network with diverse bit rates. On the other hand, TCP is unaware of such {\em rate diversity} when it performs flow rate control in wireless networks. Experiments show that the throughput of flows in a wireless network are driven by the one with the lowest bit rate, (i.e., the one with the worst channel condition). This does not only lead to low channel utilization, but also fluctuated performance for all flows independent of their individual channel conditions. To address this problem, we conduct an optimization-based analytical study of such behavior of TCP. Based on this optimization framework, we present a joint flow control and active queue management solution. The presented channel-aware active queue management (CA-AQM) provides congestion signals for flow control not only based on the queue length but also the channel condition and the transmission bit rate. Theoretical analysis shows that our solution isolates the performance of individual flows with diverse bit rates. Further, it stabilizes the queue lengths and provides a time-fair channel allocation.     Applications of Repeated Games in Wireless Networks: A Survey

    A repeated game is an effective tool to model interactions and conflicts for players aiming to achieve their objectives in a long-term basis. Contrary to static noncooperative games that model an interaction among players in only one period, in repeated games, interactions of players repeat for multiple periods; and thus the players become aware of other players' past behaviors and their future benefits, and will adapt their behavior accordingly. In wireless networks, conflicts among wireless nodes can lead to selfish behaviors, resulting in poor network performances and detrimental individual payoffs. In this paper, we survey the applications of repeated games in different wireless networks. The main goal is to demonstrate the use of repeated games to encourage wireless nodes to cooperate, thereby improving network performances and avoiding network disruption due to selfish behaviors. Furthermore, various problems in wireless networks and variations of repeated game models together with the corresponding solutions are discussed in this survey.     Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation in Wireless Networks: An Overview of Game-Theoretic Approaches

    An overview of game-theoretic approaches to energy-efficient resource allocation in wireless networks is presented. Focusing on multiple-access networks, it is demonstrated that game theory can be used as an effective tool to study resource allocation in wireless networks with quality-of-service (QoS) constraints. A family of non-cooperative (distributed) games is presented in which each user seeks to choose a strategy that maximizes its own utility while satisfying its QoS requirements. The utility function considered here measures the number of reliable bits that are transmitted per joule of energy consumed and, hence, is particulary suitable for energy-constrained networks. The actions available to each user in trying to maximize its own utility are at least the choice of the transmit power and, depending on the situation, the user may also be able to choose its transmission rate, modulation, packet size, multiuser receiver, multi-antenna processing algorithm, or carrier allocation strategy. The best-response strategy and Nash equilibrium for each game is presented. Using this game-theoretic framework, the effects of power control, rate control, modulation, temporal and spatial signal processing, carrier allocation strategy and delay QoS constraints on energy efficiency and network capacity are quantified.Comment: To appear in the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine: Special Issue on Resource-Constrained Signal Processing, Communications and Networking, May 200

    Self-stabilizing TDMA Algorithms for Wireless Ad-hoc Networks without External Reference

    Time division multiple access (TDMA) is a method for sharing communication media. In wireless communications, TDMA algorithms often divide the radio time into timeslots of uniform size, ξ\xi, and then combine them into frames of uniform size, τ\tau. We consider TDMA algorithms that allocate at least one timeslot in every frame to every node. Given a maximal node degree, δ\delta, and no access to external references for collision detection, time or position, we consider the problem of collision-free self-stabilizing TDMA algorithms that use constant frame size. We demonstrate that this problem has no solution when the frame size is τ<max{2δ,χ2}\tau < \max\{2\delta,\chi_2\}, where χ2\chi_2 is the chromatic number for distance-22 vertex coloring. As a complement to this lower bound, we focus on proving the existence of collision-free self-stabilizing TDMA algorithms that use constant frame size of τ\tau. We consider basic settings (no hardware support for collision detection and no prior clock synchronization), and the collision of concurrent transmissions from transmitters that are at most two hops apart. In the context of self-stabilizing systems that have no external reference, we are the first to study this problem (to the best of our knowledge), and use simulations to show convergence even with computation time uncertainties
