    A particle swarm optimisation for the no-wait flow shop problem with due date constraints.

    Peer ReviewedThis paper considers the no-wait flow shop scheduling problem with due date constraints. In the no-wait flow shop problem, waiting time is not allowed between successive operations of jobs. Moreover, a due date is associated with the completion of each job. The considered objective function is makespan. This problem is proved to be strongly NP-Hard. In this paper, a particle swarm optimisation (PSO) is developed to deal with the problem. Moreover, the effect of some dispatching rules for generating initial solutions are studied. A Taguchi-based design of experience approach has been followed to determine the effect of the different values of the parameters on the performance of the algorithm. To evaluate the performance of the proposed PSO, a large number of benchmark problems are selected from the literature and solved with different due date and penalty settings. Computational results confirm that the proposed PSO is efficient and competitive; the developed framework is able to improve many of the best-known solutions of the test problems available in the literature

    An effective iterated greedy algorithm for the mixed no-idle flowshop scheduling problem

    In the no-idle flowshop, machines cannot be idle after finishing one job and before starting the next one. Therefore, start times of jobs must be delayed to guarantee this constraint. In practice machines show this behavior as it might be technically unfeasible or uneconomical to stop a machine in between jobs. This has important ramifications in the modern industry including fiber glass processing, foundries, production of integrated circuits and the steel making industry, among others. However, to assume that all machines in the shop have this no-idle constraint is not realistic. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper to study the mixed no-idle extension where only some machines have the no-idle constraint. We present a mixed integer programming model for this new problem and the equations to calculate the makespan. We also propose a set of formulas to accelerate the calculation of insertions that is used both in heuristics as well as in the local search procedures. An effective iterated greedy (IG) algorithm is proposed. We use an NEH-based heuristic to construct a high quality initial solution. A local search using the proposed accelerations is employed to emphasize intensification and exploration in the IG. A new destruction and construction procedure is also shown. To evaluate the proposed algorithm, we present several adaptations of other well-known and recent metaheuristics for the problem and conduct a comprehensive set of computational and statistical experiments with a total of 1750 instances.     An Iterated Greedy Heuristic for Mixed No-Wait Flowshop Problems

    [EN] The mixed no-wait flowshop problem with both wait and no-wait constraints has many potential real-life applications. The problem can be regarded as a generalization of the traditional permutation flowshop and the no-wait flowshop. In this paper, we study, for the first time, this scheduling setting with makespan minimization. We first propose a mathematical model and then we design a speed-up makespan calculation procedure. By introducing a varying number of destructed jobs, a modified iterated greedy algorithm is proposed for the considered problem which consists of four components: 1) initialization solution construction; 2) destruction; 3) reconstruction; and 4) local search. To further improve the intensification and efficiency of the proposal, insertion is performed on some neighbor jobs of the best position in a sequence during the initialization, solution construction, and reconstruction phases. After calibrating parameters and components, the proposal is compared with five existing algorithms for similar problems on adapted Taillard benchmark instances.     DISCRETE PARTICLE SWARM OPTIMIZATION FOR THE ORIENTEERING PROBLEM

    Discrete particle swarm optimization (DPSO) is gaining popularity in the area of combinatorial optimization in the recent past due to its simplicity in coding and consistency in performance.  A DPSO algorithm has been developed for orienteering problem (OP) which has been shown to have many practical applications.  It uses reduced variable neighborhood search as a local search tool.  The DPSO algorithm was compared with ten heuristic models from the literature using benchmark problems.  The results show that the DPSO algorithm is a robust algorithm that can optimally solve the well known OP test problems

Gerçek hayatta çok sayıda uygulaması bulunan permütasyon akış tipi çizelgeleme problemi (PATÇP) yarım asırdan uzun süredir araştırmacıların ilgisini çekmektedir. El Bombası Patlatma Metodu (EBPM) Ahrari ve arkadaşları tarafından el bombalarının patlamalarından esinlenerek geliştirilmiş evrimsel bir algoritmadır. Bu çalışmada EBPM, permütasyon akış tipi çizelgeleme problemlerinin çözümü için uyarlanmıştır. Daha sonra metodu diğer metasezgisellerden ayıran özellik olan ajan bölgesi yarıçapının metot performansına etkisi araştırılmış ve metodun maksimum tamamlanma zamanı performans ölçütüne göre Taillard tarafından geliştirilmiş olan test problemleri üzerindeki performansları incelenmiştir. Sonuç olarak EBPM’nin makul sürelerde kabul edilebilir sonuçlara ulaşabildiği ve PATÇP’lerin çözümünde kullanılabileceği görülmüştür

    Native metaheuristics for non-permutation flowshop scheduling

    The most general flowshop scheduling problem is also addressed in the literature as non-permutation flowshop (NPFS). Current processors are able to cope with the combinatorial complexity of (n!)exp m. NPFS scheduling by metaheuristics. After briefly discussing the requirements for a manufacturing layout to be designed and modeled as non-permutation flowshop, a disjunctive graph (digraph) approach is used to build native solutions. The implementation of an Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm has been described in detail; it has been shown how the biologically inspired mechanisms produce eligible schedules, as opposed to most metaheuristics approaches, which improve permutation solutions. ACO algorithms are an example of native non-permutation (NNP) solutions of the flowshop scheduling problem, opening a new perspective on building purely native approaches. The proposed NNP-ACO has been assessed over existing native approaches improving most makespan upper bounds of the benchmark problems from Demirkol et al. (1998)

    Adjusted permutation method for multiple attribute decision making with meta-heuristic solution approaches

    The permutation method of multiple attribute decision making has two significant deficiencies: high computational time and wrong priority output in some problem instances. In this paper, a novel permutation method called adjusted permutation method (APM) is proposed to compensate deficiencies of conventional permutation method. We propose Tabu search (TS) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) to find suitable solutions at a reasonable computational time for large problem instances. The proposed method is examined using some numerical examples to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The preliminary results show that both approaches provide competent solutions in relatively reasonable amounts of time while TS performs better to solve APM
