Linear Precoding for MIMO Channels with QAM Constellations and Reduced Complexity
In this paper, the problem of designing a linear precoder for Multiple-Input
Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems in conjunction with Quadrature Amplitude
Modulation (QAM) is addressed. First, a novel and efficient methodology to
evaluate the input-output mutual information for a general Multiple-Input
Multiple-Output (MIMO) system as well as its corresponding gradients is
presented, based on the Gauss-Hermite quadrature rule. Then, the method is
exploited in a block coordinate gradient ascent optimization process to
determine the globally optimal linear precoder with respect to the MIMO
input-output mutual information for QAM systems with relatively moderate MIMO
channel sizes. The proposed methodology is next applied in conjunction with the
complexity-reducing per-group processing (PGP) technique, which is
semi-optimal, to both perfect channel state information at the transmitter
(CSIT) as well as statistical channel state information (SCSI) scenarios, with
high transmitting and receiving antenna size, and for constellation size up to
. We show by numerical results that the precoders developed offer
significantly better performance than the configuration with no precoder, and
the maximum diversity precoder for QAM with constellation sizes , and
and for MIMO channel size
Receiver Algorithm based on Differential Signaling for SIMO Phase Noise Channels with Common and Separate Oscillator Configurations
In this paper, a receiver algorithm consisting of differential transmission
and a two-stage detection for a single-input multiple-output (SIMO) phase-noise
channels is studied. Specifically, the phases of the QAM modulated data symbols
are manipulated before transmission in order to make them more immune to the
random rotational effects of phase noise. At the receiver, a two-stage detector
is implemented, which first detects the amplitude of the transmitted symbols
from a nonlinear combination of the received signal amplitudes. Then in the
second stage, the detector performs phase detection. The studied signaling
method does not require transmission of any known symbols that act as pilots.
Furthermore, no phase noise estimator (or a tracker) is needed at the receiver
to compensate the effect of phase noise. This considerably reduces the
complexity of the receiver structure. Moreover, it is observed that the studied
algorithm can be used for the setups where a common local oscillator or
separate independent oscillators drive the radio-frequency circuitries
connected to each antenna. Due to the differential encoding/decoding of the
phase, weighted averaging can be employed at a multi-antenna receiver, allowing
for phase noise suppression to leverage the large number of antennas. Hence, we
observe that the performance improves by increasing the number of antennas,
especially in the separate oscillator case. Further increasing the number of
receive antennas results in a performance error floor, which is a function of
the quality of the oscillator at the transmitter.Comment: IEEE GLOBECOM 201
On the distribution of an effective channel estimator for multi-cell massive MIMO
Accurate channel estimation is of utmost importance for massive MIMO systems to provide significant improvements in spectral and energy efficiency. In this work, we present a study on the distribution of a simple but yet effective and practical channel estimator for multi-cell massive MIMO systems suffering from pilot-contamination. The proposed channel estimator performs well under moderate to aggressive pilot contamination scenarios without previous knowledge of the inter-cell large-scale channel coefficients and noise power, asymptotically approximating the performance of the linear MMSE estimator as the number of antennas increases. We prove that the distribution of the proposed channel estimator can be accurately approximated by the circularly-symmetric complex normal distribution, when the number of antennas, M, deployed at the base station is greater than 10
