The evolution of business analytics : based on case study research

While business analytics is becoming more significant and widely used by companies from increasing industries, for many the concept remains a complex illusion. The field of business analytics is considerably generic and fragmented, leaving managers confused and ultimately inhibited to make valuable decisions. This paper presents an evolutionary depiction of business analytics, using real-world case studies to illustrate a distinct overview that describes where the phenomenon was derived from, where it currently stands, and where it is heading towards. This paper provides eight case studies, representing three different eras: yesterday (1950s to 1990s), today (2000s to 2020s), and tomorrow (2030s to 2050s). Through cross-case analysis we have identified concluding patterns that lay as foundation for the discussion on future development within business analytics. We argue based on our findings that automatization of business processes will most likely continue to increase. AI is expanding in numerous areas, each specializing in a complex task, previously reserved by professionals. However, patterns show that new occupations linked to artificial intelligence will most probably be created. For the training of intelligent systems, data will most likely be requested more than ever. The increasing data will likely cause complications in current data infrastructures, causing the need for stronger networks and systems. The systems will need to process, store, and manage the great amount of various data types in real-time, while maintaining high security. Furthermore, data privacy concerns have become more significant in recent years, although, the case study research indicates that it has not limited corporations access to data. The process of record keeping has evolved through time. As our technology advances, so does our ability to manage information. We have progressed from paper-based records to new digital techniques and formats to store records. However, digital storage is not the Holy Grail answer to preservation and storage problems. The results are presented of a study which identifies over 100 new and highly capable space systems for the 1980-2000 time period: civilian systems which could bring benefits to large numbers of average citizens in everyday life, much enhance the kinds and levels of public services, increase the economic motivation for industrial investment in space, expand scientific horizons; and, in the military area, systems which could materially alter current concepts of tactical and strategic engagements. From Data to Knowledge in Secondary Health Care Databases

The advent of big data in health care is a topic receiving increasing attention worldwide. In the UK, over the last decade, the National Health Service (NHS) programme for Information Technology has boosted big data by introducing electronic infrastructures in hospitals and GP practices across the country. This ever growing amount of data promises to expand our understanding of the services, processes and research. Potential bene�ts include reducing costs, optimisation of services, knowledge discovery, and patient-centred predictive modelling. This thesis will explore the above by studying over ten years worth of electronic data and systems in a hospital treating over 750 thousand patients a year. The hospital's information systems store routinely collected data, used primarily by health practitioners to support and improve patient care. This raw data is recorded on several di�erent systems but rarely linked or analysed. This thesis explores the secondary uses of such data by undertaking two case studies, one on prostate cancer and another on stroke. The journey from data to knowledge is made in each of the studies by traversing critical steps: data retrieval, linkage, integration, preparation, mining and analysis. Throughout, novel methods and computational techniques are introduced and the value of routinely collected data is assessed. In particular, this thesis discusses in detail the methodological aspects of developing clinical data warehouses from routine heterogeneous data and it introduces methods to model, visualise and analyse the journeys that patients take through care. This work has provided lessons in hospital IT provision, integration, visualisation and analytics of complex electronic patient records and databases and has enabled the use of raw routine data for management decision making and clinical research in both case studies

Crisis 2030: Aging at Risk

This thesis analyzes critical issues affecting the older adult population of the United States in the year 2030 and recommends policies needed to remedy them. In the first chapter, the thesis addresses the upcoming aging crisis of the baby boomer population, both in numbers and affordability. The second chapter further describes and analyzes the major problems affecting the baby boomer population. The third chapter examines how technology can provide a universal and friendly design for older adult users. Chapters four through seven illustrate four distinctive case studies of Baby Boomers living in the year 2030. The case studies provide resolutions to the issues presented in chapter two. The eighth chapter recommends an integrated set of policies dealing with technology, health care, and home care, which are emphasized in the case studies. In conclusion, the thesis argues for policy changes that should begin to be crafted today in order to be implemented and to achieve the future scenarios depicted in the case studies
