Capturing and representing deliberation in participatory planning practices
In this paper we argue for the importance of capturing and representing deliberation in participatory planning practices. We discuss the concept of deliberation in planning theory, and argue for a paradigm that puts deliberation at the centre of public participation to planning decision. We argue that in order to enable effective participation, the normally ephemeral delib- eration process needs to be captured and represented so that the information and knowledge gathered during deliberation is visible for all, can be effectively traced, reused, and can actively influence planning decisions. To scaffold this we describe the integration of three technologies to create a collective project memory structured against five dimensions of participatory plan- ning processes: dialogical, social, spatial, temporal and causal. Based on several authentic par- ticipatory planning cases, we report that this supported deliberation across planning tasks, communication modes, time and environments. The coupled use of online and offline group- ware technologies created a more expressive and transparent participatory knowledge base than is possible with conventional media, and enhanced participatory planning by: supporting the effective capture and representation of deliberation processes and products; providing a rich picture of the social setting in which planning decision develops and supporting reflection in and on planning actions
Keeping Context In Mind: Automating Mobile App Access Control with User Interface Inspection
Recent studies observe that app foreground is the most striking component
that influences the access control decisions in mobile platform, as users tend
to deny permission requests lacking visible evidence. However, none of the
existing permission models provides a systematic approach that can
automatically answer the question: Is the resource access indicated by app
foreground? In this work, we present the design, implementation, and evaluation
of COSMOS, a context-aware mediation system that bridges the semantic gap
between foreground interaction and background access, in order to protect
system integrity and user privacy. Specifically, COSMOS learns from a large set
of apps with similar functionalities and user interfaces to construct generic
models that detect the outliers at runtime. It can be further customized to
satisfy specific user privacy preference by continuously evolving with user
decisions. Experiments show that COSMOS achieves both high precision and high
recall in detecting malicious requests. We also demonstrate the effectiveness
of COSMOS in capturing specific user preferences using the decisions collected
from 24 users and illustrate that COSMOS can be easily deployed on smartphones
as a real-time guard with a very low performance overhead.Comment: Accepted for publication in IEEE INFOCOM'201

Color-to-speech sensory substitution device for the visually impaired
A hardware device is presented that converts color to speech for use by the blind and visually impaired. The use of audio tones for transferring knowledge of colors identified to individuals was investigated but was discarded in favor of the use of direct speech. A unique color-clustering algorithm was implemented using a hardware description language (VHDL), which in-turn was used to program an Altera Corporation's programmable logic device (PLD). The PLD maps all possible incoming colors into one of 24 color names, and outputs an address to a speech device, which in-turn plays back one of 24 voice recorded color names. To the author's knowledge, there are only two such color to speech systems available on the market. However, both are designed to operate at a distance of less than an inch from the surface whose color is to be checked. The device presented here uses original front-end optics to increase the range of operation from less than an inch to sixteen feet and greater. Because of the increased range of operation, the device can not only be used for color identification, but also as a navigation aid

The primary objective of this paper is to approach the use of the 3D Geographic Information Systems (3D GIS), as an instrumental
tool that allows us to deal efficiently with the extensive amount of information that characterises a large part of the research carried
out in the field of Urbanism and Regional Planning. Specifically, the study focuses on medium-sized cities in Andalusia, the most
populous and the second largest region in Spain. The Andalusian urban system is substantially characterised by the historical
importance of this type of cities within its territorial organisation, which dates back to more than two thousand years, and whose
potential as sustainable and balanced stands out. In particular, it is intended to address features related to urban characterisation as
medium-sized cities that have been declared as heritage sites, as well as, the integration of the cultural heritage into urban development
planning as an active strategy by the cultural administration of the regional and local governments. In detail, this paper will analyse
data relating to the development experienced, their characterisation through urban indicators or the evolution and traceability of their
protection. In this sense, the use of 3D GIS will not only allow the efficient recording and the graphical representation of a significant
amount of data resulting from the quantitative and qualitative analysis carried out but also model them using the third dimension to
facilitate a cross analysis among the cities under study. Definitely, the aim is to demonstrate the suitability use of this technology in

An On-the-fly Provenance Tracking Mechanism for Stream Processing Systems
Applications that operate over streaming data withhigh-volume and real-time processing requirements are becomingincreasingly important. These applications process streamingdata in real-time and deliver instantaneous responses to supportprecise and on-time decisions. In such systems, traceability -the ability to verify and investigate the source of a particularoutput - in real-time is extremely important. This ability allowsraw streaming data to be checked and processing steps to beverified and validated in timely manner. Therefore, it is crucialthat stream systems have a mechanism for dynamically trackingprovenance - the process that produced result data - at executiontime, which we refer to as on-the-fly stream provenance tracking.In this paper, we propose a novel on-the-fly provenance trackingmechanism that enables provenance queries to be performeddynamically without requiring provenance assertions to be storedpersistently. We demonstrate how our provenance mechanismworks by means of an on-the-fly provenance tracking algorithm.The experimental evaluation shows that our provenance solutiondoes not have a significant effect on the normal processing ofstream systems given a 7% overhead. Moreover, our provenancesolution offers low-latency processing (0.3 ms per additionalcomponent) with reasonable memory consumption.<br/
