Big Data has significant impact in developing functional smart cities and supporting modern societies. In this paper, we investigate the importance of Big Data in modern life and economy, and discuss challenges arising from Big Data utilization. Different computational intelligence techniques have been considered as tools for Big Data analytics. We also explore the powerful combination of Big Data and Computational Intelligence (CI) and identify a number of areas, where novel applications in real world smart city problems can be developed by utilizing these powerful tools and techniques. We present a case study for intelligent transportation in the context of a smart city, and a novel data modelling methodology based on a biologically inspired universal generative modelling approach called Hierarchical Spatial-Temporal State Machine (HSTSM). We further discuss various implications of policy, protection, valuation and commercialization related to Big Data, its applications and deployment

IDENTIFYING AREA HOTSPOTS AND TAXI PICKUP TIMES USING SPATIAL DENSITY-BASED CLUSTERING

Taxis are one of the competitive sectors of transportation and are recognized as convenient and easy means of transportation to meet individual needs. However, in the operation of a taxi there are some problems that would make the taxi service less optimal, such as the difficulty with finding a taxi at specific hours, the imbalance between demand and taxi supplies, and the length of passengers waiting for a taxi. Therefore, to optimize taxi service, a knowledge base is needed for strategic management decision making. In the study, data of exploration taxis uses a DBSCAN algorithm aimed at identifying and clustering pickup hotspots based on time during weekday and weekend time from Queens, New York City. As for the features used which are pickup latitude and pickup longitude. Accuracy scores for modeling use coefficients to achieve accuracy scores of 0.80 on weekdays and 0.77 on weekends where the accuracy score falls into the accurate category in modeling. Results show that there are three areas of taxi pickup centers based on high taxi demand in January 2016, where they are at LaGuardia airport, John f. Kennedy international, and the area around Steinway Street

Advances in Public Transport Platform for the Development of Sustainability Cities

Modern societies demand high and varied mobility, which in turn requires a complex transport system adapted to social needs that guarantees the movement of people and goods in an economically efficient and safe way, but all are subject to a new environmental rationality and the new logic of the paradigm of sustainability. From this perspective, an efficient and flexible transport system that provides intelligent and sustainable mobility patterns is essential to our economy and our quality of life. The current transport system poses growing and significant challenges for the environment, human health, and sustainability, while current mobility schemes have focused much more on the private vehicle that has conditioned both the lifestyles of citizens and cities, as well as urban and territorial sustainability. Transport has a very considerable weight in the framework of sustainable development due to environmental pressures, associated social and economic effects, and interrelations with other sectors. The continuous growth that this sector has experienced over the last few years and its foreseeable increase, even considering the change in trends due to the current situation of generalized crisis, make the challenge of sustainable transport a strategic priority at local, national, European, and global levels. This Special Issue will pay attention to all those research approaches focused on the relationship between evolution in the area of transport with a high incidence in the environment from the perspective of efficiency

Traffic Mitigation And Congestion In Ibadan, Oyo State Nigeria: Causes And Solutions

This dissertation focuses on how technology has transformed road traffic congestion between road users by examining the relationship between government, businesses, and road users through the application of traffic management in many cities in four regions of the world. It analyzes the connections between political decisions of traffic management, how users are made knowledgeable and the new modes of transportation as they relate to the roles of public and private users. The dissertation examines current literatures of twenty two (23) different countries: North America (United States of America and Canada), Europe (Poland, United Kingdom, Italy, Netherlands and Sweden), Asia (Russia, China, Singapore, Hongkong, United Arab Emirates, Israel, South Korea, Japan, India), and West Africa (Ghana, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Mali, Cote D’Ivoire, Nigeria) as they relate to trends and causes of congestion and mitigation applied in each country. Finally, this dissertation takes an in depth look at how road network can be improved through mitigation to reduce congestion in Nigeria; most specifically in Ibadan focusing on the intersection of Sango Eleyele Road and Sango Ojoo Road representing most of the major intersections in Ibadan, Oyo State Nigeria

Connected And Autonomous Vehicles: Implications For Policy And Practice In City And Transportation Planning

Vehicular transportation is undergoing a technological change. Cars are being automated, which have significant implications for governments. Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) and Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) can have significant benefits such as improved overall roadside safety and efficiency however, there may also be negative effects as well such as increased sprawl and social inequity. In Ontario, AV testing on public roads has been conducted under O. Reg. 306/15, which has also helped to establish Ontario as a leader of innovation in Canada. Before CAVs can be mass deployed in Ontario and Canada at large however, a number of barriers will need to be addressed such as legislation, infrastructure and cooperation between municipalities, and between municipalities and the automotive industry. Recommendations for municipal and provincial governments are provided
