MOON: A Mixed Objective Optimization Network for the Recognition of Facial Attributes
Attribute recognition, particularly facial, extracts many labels for each
image. While some multi-task vision problems can be decomposed into separate
tasks and stages, e.g., training independent models for each task, for a
growing set of problems joint optimization across all tasks has been shown to
improve performance. We show that for deep convolutional neural network (DCNN)
facial attribute extraction, multi-task optimization is better. Unfortunately,
it can be difficult to apply joint optimization to DCNNs when training data is
imbalanced, and re-balancing multi-label data directly is structurally
infeasible, since adding/removing data to balance one label will change the
sampling of the other labels. This paper addresses the multi-label imbalance
problem by introducing a novel mixed objective optimization network (MOON) with
a loss function that mixes multiple task objectives with domain adaptive
re-weighting of propagated loss. Experiments demonstrate that not only does
MOON advance the state of the art in facial attribute recognition, but it also
outperforms independently trained DCNNs using the same data. When using facial
attributes for the LFW face recognition task, we show that our balanced (domain
adapted) network outperforms the unbalanced trained network.Comment: Post-print of manuscript accepted to the European Conference on

Learning Social Relation Traits from Face Images
Social relation defines the association, e.g, warm, friendliness, and
dominance, between two or more people. Motivated by psychological studies, we
investigate if such fine-grained and high-level relation traits can be
characterised and quantified from face images in the wild. To address this
challenging problem we propose a deep model that learns a rich face
representation to capture gender, expression, head pose, and age-related
attributes, and then performs pairwise-face reasoning for relation prediction.
To learn from heterogeneous attribute sources, we formulate a new network
architecture with a bridging layer to leverage the inherent correspondences
among these datasets. It can also cope with missing target attribute labels.
Extensive experiments show that our approach is effective for fine-grained
social relation learning in images and videos.Comment: To appear in International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV) 201
Synthesizing Normalized Faces from Facial Identity Features
We present a method for synthesizing a frontal, neutral-expression image of a
person's face given an input face photograph. This is achieved by learning to
generate facial landmarks and textures from features extracted from a
facial-recognition network. Unlike previous approaches, our encoding feature
vector is largely invariant to lighting, pose, and facial expression.
Exploiting this invariance, we train our decoder network using only frontal,
neutral-expression photographs. Since these photographs are well aligned, we
can decompose them into a sparse set of landmark points and aligned texture
maps. The decoder then predicts landmarks and textures independently and
combines them using a differentiable image warping operation. The resulting
images can be used for a number of applications, such as analyzing facial
attributes, exposure and white balance adjustment, or creating a 3-D avatar
