    Computing Power of Hybrid Models in Synchronous Networks

    During the last two decades, a small set of distributed computing models for networks have emerged, among which LOCAL, CONGEST, and Broadcast Congested Clique (BCC) play a prominent role. We consider hybrid models resulting from combining these three models. That is, we analyze the computing power of models allowing to, say, perform a constant number of rounds of CONGEST, then a constant number of rounds of LOCAL, then a constant number of rounds of BCC, possibly repeating this figure a constant number of times. We specifically focus on 2-round models, and we establish the complete picture of the relative powers of these models. That is, for every pair of such models, we determine whether one is (strictly) stronger than the other, or whether the two models are incomparable. The separation results are obtained by approaching communication complexity through an original angle, which may be of an independent interest. The two players are not bounded to compute the value of a binary function, but the combined outputs of the two players are constrained by this value. In particular, we introduce the XOR-Index problem, in which Alice is given a binary vector x ? {0,1}? together with an index i ? [n], Bob is given a binary vector y ? {0,1}? together with an index j ? [n], and, after a single round of 2-way communication, Alice must output a boolean out_A, and Bob must output a boolean out_B, such that out_A ? out_B = x_j? y_i. We show that the communication complexity of XOR-Index is ?(n) bits

    A reabilitação de espaços interiores, num contexto de personalização em série, requer uma mudança na forma como os sistemas construtivos são desenhados, construídos e reutilizados. Recorrendo a plataformas digitais para a participação os arquitetos, em colaboração com outros atores na indústria AEC, podem desenvolver e oferecer soluções personalizadas e desmontáveis a utilizadores genéricos. Esta investigação propõe o uso de sistemas de construção personalizada em série (CPS) para fornecer sistemas de divisórias desmontáveis fabricadas digitalmente usando metodologias do levantamento à produção ligadas a configuradores online, em que os utilizadores co-projetam soluções para a reabilitação de espaços interiores. A metodologia de investigação socorre-se de pesquisa e análise teórica para definir critérios e objetivos a serem explorados em resolução de problemas de projeto. A partir destas experiências são sintetizados princípios e uma metodologia para a conceção de sistemas CPS de sistemas de divisórias personalizáveis e desmontáveis para a reabilitação. A metodologia clarifica os papeis dos atores, passos, e arquitetura do sistema para implementar um sistema CPS do levantamento à produção. A investigação demonstra que a metodologia de levantamento proposta é utilizável por utilizadores especialistas e não-especialistas, com os últimos a apresentarem em média melhores resultados, e que estes levantamentos têm precisão suficiente para processos do desenho à produção. Também se demonstra que a metodologia do levantamento à produção, a gramática genérica, e os critérios são úteis para os arquitetos conceberem sistemas de divisórias desmontáveis e personalizáveis para sistemas CPS abertos.Building renovation of interior spaces, in the context of mass customization, requires a shift in how construction systems are designed, built, and reused. Leveraging digital frameworks for user participation, architects in collaboration with other stakeholders in the AEC industry may design anddeliver customized and disassemble-able solutions to generic end-users. The research proposes mass customization construction (MCC) systems can deliver cost-effective digitally fabricated and disassemble-able construction systems using survey-to-production workflows deployed in web configurators for end-users to co-design solutions in building renovation. The research methodology uses theoretical inquiry and analysis to define criteria and objectives to be explored in design problem solving. From these experiments generalizable principles and a lowkey workflow for the design of MCC systems of customizable and disassemble-able partition wall construction systems for open building renovation are synthetized. The workflow clarifies stakeholder roles, steps, and system architecture to implement an MCC system from survey to production. This investigation demonstrates the proposed survey workflow is usable by non-expert and expert instance-designers, with the former having on-average better results, and that these can survey spaces with sufficient precision for design-to-production workflows. It is also shown the survey-to-production workflow, the generic grammar, and criteria are useful for architects to design customizable and disassemble-able partition wall systems for open MCC systems

    Angles and devices for quantum approximate optimization

    A potential application of emerging Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) devices is that of approximately solving combinatorial optimization problems. This thesis investigates a gate-based algorithm for this purpose, the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA), in two major themes. First, we examine how the QAOA resolves the problems it is designed to solve. We take a statistical view of the algorithm applied to ensembles of problems, first, considering a highly symmetric version of the algorithm, using Grover drivers. In this highly symmetric context, we find a simple dependence of the QAOA state’s expected value on how values of the cost function are distributed. Furthering this theme, we demonstrate that, generally, QAOA performance depends on problem statistics with respect to a metric induced by a chosen driver Hamiltonian. We obtain a method for evaluating QAOA performance on worst-case problems, those of random costs, for differing driver choices. Second, we investigate a QAOA context with device control occurring only via single-qubit gates, rather than using individually programmable one- and two-qubit gates. In this reduced control overhead scheme---the digital-analog scheme---the complexity of devices running QAOA circuits is decreased at the cost of errors which are shown to be non-harmful in certain regimes. We then explore hypothetical device designs one could use for this purpose.Eine mögliche Anwendung für “Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum devices” (NISQ devices) ist die näherungsweise Lösung von kombinatorischen Optimierungsproblemen. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht anhand zweier Hauptthemen einen gatterbasierten Algorithmus, den sogenannten “Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm” (QAOA). Zuerst prüfen wir, wie der QAOA jene Probleme löst, für die er entwickelt wurde. Wir betrachten den Algorithmus in einer Kombination mit hochsymmetrischen Grover-Treibern für statistische Ensembles von Probleminstanzen. In diesem Kontext finden wir eine einfache Abhängigkeit von der Verteilung der Kostenfunktionswerte. Weiterführend zeigen wir, dass die QAOA-Leistung generell von der Problemstatistik in Bezug auf eine durch den gewählten Treiber-Hamiltonian induzierte Metrik abhängt. Wir erhalten eine Methode zur Bewertung der QAOA-Leistung bei schwersten Problemen (solche zufälliger Kosten) für unterschiedliche Treiberauswahlen. Zweitens untersuchen wir eine QAOA-Variante, bei der sich die Hardware- Kontrolle nur auf Ein-Qubit-Gatter anstatt individuell programmierbare Ein- und Zwei-Qubit-Gatter erstreckt. In diesem reduzierten Kontrollaufwandsschema—dem digital-analogen Schema—sinkt die Komplexität der Hardware, welche die QAOASchaltungen ausführt, auf Kosten von Fehlern, die in bestimmten Bereichen als ungefährlich nachgewiesen werden.     A Design Science Research Approach to Architecting and Developing Information Systems for Collaborative Manufacturing : A Case for Human-Robot Collaboration

    Konseptointi- ja suunnitteluvaiheessa sekä valmistuksen, käytön ja kehitysprosessin aikana syntyy tietoa, jonka hyödyntämisessä on valtavaa potentiaalia liike-elämän ja tuotantoprosessien muuttamiseen. Neljännen teollisen vallankumouksen ytimessä oleva digitaalinen muutos tunnistaa tämän painottaen erityisesti tämän tiedon yhdistämistä toimintojen ja järjestelmien tukemiseksi läpi tuotteen elinkaareen, mitä kutsutaan digitaaliseksi säikeen kehykseksi (digital thread framework). Tämän väitöskirjan tavoitteena on kehittää ja käyttää yhtä tällaista viitekehystä ihmisen ja robotin yhteistoiminnan asiayhteydessä. Tämä kehys pyrkii vastaamaan merkittävään ongelmaan, joka liittyy mukautuvuuden ja joustavuuden abstrakteihin ominaisuuksiin. Nykyiset ihmisen ja robotin yhteistyöjärjestelmät (human-robot collaboration (HRC)) on rakennettu pääasiassa pysyviksi järjestelmiksi, jotka sivuuttavat ihmisten intuitiivisen toiminnan asettamalla heidän roolinsa yhteistyötehtävissä etukäteen määritellyiksi. Ensimmäinen on digitaalisen säikeen kehys (digital thread framework), joka integroi tuotesuunnitteluympäristön toimijaksi monitoimijajärjestelmään käyttäen uusimpia tietoon perustuvia suunnittelujärjestelmiä, mikä tarjoaa prosessin toimijoille pääsyn tuotesuunnittelumalleihin reaaliajassa. Toinen on lisätyn todellisuuden malli, joka tarjoaa rajapinnan kokoonpanotehtävässä yhteistyöhön osallistuvan ihmisoperaattorin ja edellä mainitun kehyksen välille. Kolmas on tukitietomalli, jota yhteistyötä tekevät toimijat käyttävät tietopohjanaan täyttääkseen yhteistyössä tapahtuvan kokoonpanon tavoitteet mukautuvasti. Näitä kehitettyjä artefakteja käytettiin kokonaisuutena tapaustutkimuksissa, jotka liittyivät aidon dieselmoottorin kokoonpanoon, ja joissa todennettiin niiden hyödyllisyys ja että ne lisäävät joustavuutta, jota varten kehys (framework) suunniteltiin. Näin ollen on odotettavissa, että tietojärjestelmien tutkimus, kuten tämä väitöskirja, voi auttaa ottamaan merkittäviä askeleita tähän suuntaan.Information generated from the conceptualization, design, manufacturing, and use of a product has immense potential in transforming both the business and manufacturing processes of the manufacturing enterprise. The digital transformation at the heart of the fourth industrial revolution has acknowledged this with a special emphasis on weaving a thread of this information to support functions and systems throughout the life cycle of the product with what is known as a digital thread framework. This dissertation aims to develop and use one such framework in the context of human-robot collaborative assembly. The overarching problem that the framework aims to solve can be attributed to the abstract qualities of adaptability and flexibility. The human-robot collaboration (HRC) systems of today are built predominantly as static systems and ignore the intuitive role of humans by having their roles in collaborative tasks pre-defined. Furthermore, their ability to switch between products during product changeovers is also limited. This is especially problematic in the current era of product variety, stemming from the customised requirements of customers. To this end, this dissertation employs the design science research methodology to design, develop, and deploy predominantly three artefacts in a human-robot work cell in a laboratory setting. The first is the digital thread framework that integrates the product design environment using state-of-the-art knowledge-based engineering systems, as an agent of a multi-agent system, which provide the collaborative human-robot agents with access to product design models at run time. The second is a constituent mixed-reality model that provides an interface for the foregoing framework for the human operator engaged in collaborative assembly. The third is a supporting information model that the agents use as their knowledge base to fulfil adaptively the goals of collaborative assembly. Together, these developed artefacts were employed in case studies involving a real diesel engine assembly during which they were observed to provide utility and support the cause of adaptability for which the framework was designed. The identification of bounding boxes as a scalable information construct, that approximates the part geometry of the sub-assembly components, demonstrates the utility of the developed artefacts for spatially augmenting them as projections as intentions of collaborating agents. In summary, this dissertation contributes with an approach towards realising intelligent and adaptive robotics within the realms of information flows and modelling in the context of human-robot collaboration. The lack of intelligently adaptable HRC systems reported by the industry in part motivated the work undertaken in this dissertation. As future products and production systems become more complex, information systems are expected to assume greater responsibility to compensate for the inherent limits of the human working memory and enable transition towards a human-centred manufacturing, the current likes of which are labelled as Operator 4.0 and Industry 5.0. Thus, the expectation is that information systems research, such as this dissertation, can help take significant strides forward in this direction

    Will man die Linien eines Dispositivs entwirren, so muss man in jedem Fall eine Karte anfertigen, man muss kartographieren, unbekannte Länder ausmessen - eben das, was er [Foucault] als 'Arbeit im Gelände' bezeichnet hat", formulierte Gilles Deleuze 1988. Mit der vorliegenden Publikation soll ein kartographierendes Aus- und Vermessen eines komplexen, verzweigten, unübersichtlichen, zum Teil auch uneinsichtigen und übercodierten Geländes geleistet werden. Als Effekt könn(t)en fortgesetzte Klärungen von Begriffen, Konzepten und Operationsweisen dessen stattfinden, was als Kunst bezeichnet wird. 18 Autor*innen nehmen ihre Dispositiv-Erkundungen vor, so dass eine Anthologie von ausgewählten Stimmen entsteht. Die Autor*innen und ihre Texte erkunden multiperspektivisch, disparat, forensisch und komplexierend, in verschiedenen Sprachen, in ihren Entstehungskontexten und Entstehungszeiten, mit ihren stilistischen Mitteln und in einigen Fällen eng mit ihren früheren Publikationszusammenhängen verbunden. Sie sind damit im besten Fall in der Lage, je eigene Denkräume aufzufalten, die ermöglichen, Einzelbestandteile der beschriebenen oder analysierten Dispositive -- und dabei kann es sich offenbar um Einzeloperationen, Prozesse, Prozeduren, Blicke, Lücken, Aufspaltungen, Implikationen, Vorbedingungen etc. handeln -- zu unterscheiden und in einem nächsten Schritt strategische Formationen dieser heterogenen Ensembles zu diagnostizieren. Darüber hinaus ermöglichen die zusammengestellten Texte, unterschiedliche Varianten, Ausgangs-, Ansatz- und Schwerpunkte wie auch Stile von Dispositiv-Erkundungen nachvollziehen zu können. As Gilles Deleuze has argued in 1988, “[u]ntangling these lines within a social apparatus [dispositif] is, in each case, like drawing up a map, doing cartography, surveying unknown landscapes, and this is what he [Foucault] calls ‘working on the ground.’” This publication intends to provide a cartographic mapping of a complex, multi-branched, often obscure, sometimes inaccessible and overly encoded terrain. Such a mapping could and can lead to a further clarification of terms, concepts and modes of operation of that which is called art. This volume comprises 18 authors whose explorations of the dispositif have generated an anthology of select, distinct voices. Their texts are marked by multiple perspectives, they are disparate, forensic and complex, they are written in different languages, stem from different contexts and points in time, are endowed with different styles and, in some cases, also stand in close relationship with other, earlier publication contexts. This means that they are ideally positioned to unfold diverse spaces of thought, allowing them to differentiate between individual components of the dispositifs they discuss or dissect -- this may include individual operations, processes, procedures, glances, lacunae, splits, implications, preconditions, et cetera -- and allowing them, in a next step, to diagnose the strategic formations such heterogeneous ensembles might take. Beyond that, the texts assembled here allow us to discern the different variations, starting points, approaches and emphases as well as different styles of dispositif exploration.
