    Parallel discrete event simulation: A shared memory approach

    With traditional event list techniques, evaluating a detailed discrete event simulation model can often require hours or even days of computation time. Parallel simulation mimics the interacting servers and queues of a real system by assigning each simulated entity to a processor. By eliminating the event list and maintaining only sufficient synchronization to insure causality, parallel simulation can potentially provide speedups that are linear in the number of processors. A set of shared memory experiments is presented using the Chandy-Misra distributed simulation algorithm to simulate networks of queues. Parameters include queueing network topology and routing probabilities, number of processors, and assignment of network nodes to processors. These experiments show that Chandy-Misra distributed simulation is a questionable alternative to sequential simulation of most queueing network models

    Future systems will be too complex to design and implement explicitly. Instead, we will have to learn to engineer complex behaviours indirectly: through the discovery and application of local rules of behaviour, applied to simple process components, from which desired behaviours predictably emerge through dynamic interactions between massive numbers of instances. This paper describes a process-oriented architecture for fine-grained concurrent systems that enables experiments with such indirect engineering. Examples are presented showing the differing complex behaviours that can arise from minor (non-linear) adjustments to low-level parameters, the difficulties in suppressing the emergence of unwanted (bad) behaviour, the unexpected relationships between apparently unrelated physical phenomena (shown up by their separate emergence from the same primordial process swamp) and the ability to explore and engineer completely new physics (such as force fields) by their emergence from low-level process interactions whose mechanisms can only be imagined, but not built, at the current time

    The impacts of timing constraints on virtual channels multiplexing in interconnect networks

    Interconnect networks employing wormhole-switching play a critical role in shared memory multiprocessor systems-on-chip (MPSoC) designs, multicomputer systems and system area networks. Virtual channels greatly improve the performance of wormhole-switched networks because they reduce blocking by acting as "bypass" lanes for non-blocked messages. Capturing the effects of virtual channel multiplexing has always been a crucial issue for any analytical model proposed for wormhole-switched networks. Dally has developed a model to investigate the behaviour of this multiplexing which have been widely employed in the subsequent analytical models of most routing algorithms suggested in the literature. It is indispensable to modify Dally's model in order to evaluate the performance of channel multiplexing in more general networks where restrictions such as timing constraints of input arrivals and finite buffer size of queues are common. In this paper we consider timing constraints of input arrivals to investigate the virtual channel multiplexing problem inherent in most current networks. The analysis that we propose is completely general and therefore can be used with any interconnect networks employing virtual channels. The validity of the proposed equations has been verified through simulation experiments under different working conditions

    High Performance Computing is a rapidly evolving area of computer science which attends to solve complicated computational problems with the combination of computational nodes connected through high speed networks. This work concentrates on the networks problems that appear in such networks and specially focuses on the Deadlock problem that can decrease the efficiency of the communication or even destroy the balance and paralyze the network. Goal of this work is the Deadlock avoidance with the use of virtual channels, in the switches of the network where the problem appears. The deadlock avoidance assures that will not be loss of data inside network, having as result the increased latency of the served packets, due to the extra calculation that the switches have to make to apply the policy.La computación de alto rendimiento es una zona de rápida evolución de la informática que busca resolver complicados problemas de cálculo con la combinación de los nodos de cómputo conectados a través de redes de alta velocidad. Este trabajo se centra en los problemas de las redes que aparecen en este tipo de sistemas y especialmente se centra en el problema del "deadlock" que puede disminuir la eficacia de la comunicación con la paralización de la red. El objetivo de este trabajo es la evitación de deadlock con el uso de canales virtuales, en los conmutadores de la red donde aparece el problema. Evitar el deadlock asegura que no se producirá la pérdida de datos en red, teniendo como resultado el aumento de la latencia de los paquetes, debido al overhead extra de cálculo que los conmutadores tienen que hacer para aplicar la política.La computació d'alt rendiment és una àrea de ràpida evolució de la informàtica que pretén resoldre complicats problemes de càlcul amb la combinació de nodes de còmput connectats a través de xarxes d'alta velocitat. Aquest treball se centra en els problemes de les xarxes que apareixen en aquest tipus de sistemes i especialment se centra en el problema del "deadlock" que pot disminuir l'eficàcia de la comunicació amb la paralització de la xarxa. L'objectiu d'aquest treball és l'evitació de deadlock amb l'ús de canals virtuals, en els commutadors de la xarxa on apareix el problema.     An energy-efficient memory unit for clustered microarchitectures

    Whereas clustered microarchitectures themselves have been extensively studied, the memory units for these clustered microarchitectures have received relatively little attention. This article discusses some of the inherent challenges of clustered memory units and shows how these can be overcome. Clustered memory pipelines work well with the late allocation of load/store queue entries and physically unordered queues. Yet this approach has characteristic problems such as queue overflows and allocation patterns that lead to deadlocks. We propose techniques to solve each of these problems and show that a distributed memory unit can offer significant energy savings and speedups over a centralized unit. For instance, compared to a centralized cache with a load/store queue of 64/24 entries, our four-cluster distributed memory unit with load/store queues of 16/8 entries each consumes 31 percent less energy and performs 4,7 percent better on SPECint and consumes 36 percent less energy and performs 7 percent better for SPECfp.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Adaptive turn-prohibition routing algorithm for the networks of workstations

    Deadlock occurrence is a critical problem for any computer network. Various solutions have been proposed over last two decades to solve problem of deadlocks in networks using different routing schemes, like up/down routing algorithm used in Myrinet switches. However, most of existing approaches for deadlock-free routing either try to eliminate any possibility of deadlock occurrence, which can result in putting extra restrictions on the routing in the networks or put no restrictions on routing, which leads to other approach namely deadlock recovery. In this thesis emphasis is on developing hybrid approach for routing in wormhole networks, wherein some prohibition is imposed on routing along with some kind of deadlock recovery. This adaptive approach allows changing the amount of routing restrictions depending on network traffic, thus providing a flexible method to achieve better network performance compared to the existing techniques. The main idea of the proposed method consists in the sequential selections of some turns, which are prohibited to be selected during routing. After each additional turn is added, the probability of deadlock occurrence decreases gradually. Cost formula is proposed to estimate cost of implementing both strategies in a network which is basis of proposed adaptive model
