    Interactive Exploration of Temporal Event Sequences

    Life can often be described as a series of events. These events contain rich information that, when put together, can reveal history, expose facts, or lead to discoveries. Therefore, many leading organizations are increasingly collecting databases of event sequences: Electronic Medical Records (EMRs), transportation incident logs, student progress reports, web logs, sports logs, etc. Heavy investments were made in data collection and storage, but difficulties still arise when it comes to making use of the collected data. Analyzing millions of event sequences is a non-trivial task that is gaining more attention and requires better support due to its complex nature. Therefore, I aimed to use information visualization techniques to support exploratory data analysis---an approach to analyzing data to formulate hypotheses worth testing---for event sequences. By working with the domain experts who were analyzing event sequences, I identified two important scenarios that guided my dissertation: First, I explored how to provide an overview of multiple event sequences? Lengthy reports often have an executive summary to provide an overview of the report. Unfortunately, there was no executive summary to provide an overview for event sequences. Therefore, I designed LifeFlow, a compact overview visualization that summarizes multiple event sequences, and interaction techniques that supports users' exploration. Second, I examined how to support users in querying for event sequences when they are uncertain about what they are looking for. To support this task, I developed similarity measures (the M&M measure 1-2) and user interfaces (Similan 1-2) for querying event sequences based on similarity, allowing users to search for event sequences that are similar to the query. After that, I ran a controlled experiment comparing exact match and similarity search interfaces, and learned the advantages and disadvantages of both interfaces. These lessons learned inspired me to develop Flexible Temporal Search (FTS) that combines the benefits of both interfaces. FTS gives confident and countable results, and also ranks results by similarity. I continued to work with domain experts as partners, getting them involved in the iterative design, and constantly using their feedback to guide my research directions. As the research progressed, several short-term user studies were conducted to evaluate particular features of the user interfaces. Both quantitative and qualitative results were reported. To address the limitations of short-term evaluations, I included several multi-dimensional in-depth long-term case studies with domain experts in various fields to evaluate deeper benefits, validate generalizability of the ideas, and demonstrate practicability of this research in non-laboratory environments. The experience from these long-term studies was combined into a set of design guidelines for temporal event sequence exploration. My contributions from this research are LifeFlow, a visualization that compactly displays summaries of multiple event sequences, along with interaction techniques for users' explorations; similarity measures (the M&M measure 1-2) and similarity search interfaces (Similan 1-2) for querying event sequences; Flexible Temporal Search (FTS), a hybrid query approach that combines the benefits of exact match and similarity search; and case study evaluations that results in a process model and a set of design guidelines for temporal event sequence exploration. Finally, this research has revealed new directions for exploring event sequences

    Deductive Synthesis and Repair

    In this thesis, we explore techniques for the development of recursive functional programs over unbounded domains that are proved correct according to their high-level specifications. We present algorithms for automatically synthesizing executable code, starting from the speci- fication alone. We implement these algorithms in the Leon system. We augment relational specifications with a concise notation for symbolic tests, which are are helpful to characterize fragments of the functionsâ behavior. We build on our synthesis procedure to automatically repair invalid functions by generating alternative implementations. Our approach therefore formulates program repair in the framework of deductive synthesis and uses the existing program structure as a hint to guide synthesis. We rely on user-specified tests as well as automatically generated ones to localize the fault. This localization enables our procedure to repair functions that would otherwise be out of reach of our synthesizer, and ensures that most of the original behavior is preserved. We also investigate multiple ways of enabling Leon programs to interact with external, un- trusted code. For that purpose, we introduce a precise inter-procedural effect analysis for arbitrary Scala programs with mutable state, dynamic object allocation, and dynamic dispatch. We analyzed the Scala standard library containing 58000 methods and classified them into sev- eral categories according to their effects. Our analysis proves that over one half of all methods are pure, identifies a number of conditionally pure methods, and computes summary graphs and regular expressions describing the side effects of non-pure methods. We implement the synthesis and repair algorithms within the Leon system and deploy them as part of a novel interactive development environment available as a web interface. Our implementation is able to synthesize, within seconds, a number of useful recursive functions that manipulate unbounded numbers and data structures. Our repair procedure automatically locates various kinds of errors in recursive functions and fixes them by synthesizing alternative implementations

    Improving The Service Design Process: Process Integration, Conflict Reduction And Customer Involvement

    Service design is the science of creating service experiences based on the customer’s perspective, to make it useful, enjoyable and cost-effective for the customer. Although the field of service design is relatively new, it has been rapidly expanding in research and practice. Most researchers focus on the usefulness of the service, cost efficiency, meeting customers’ needs, or service strategy. However, all service elements can benefit from improving the service design process. Current service design processes are suffering a lack of integration of activities, conflicts in decision-making processes, and exclusion of practitioners’ methods. In prior research, information models were created to integrate the service design process across the enterprise. As an extension, this dissertation introduces Petri Nets to improve the service design process. Petri Nets provide a uniform environment for modeling, analysis, and design of discrete event systems. Petri Nets are used to develop a new service design process that enhances the multidisciplinary approach and includes the practitioner methods. Additionally, this dissertation uses the Lens Model to improve the decision-making mechanism. The Lens Model is to characterize decision-making policy in service design. Research shows that there is a conflict between the designer and the manager in service design decision-making. Single Lens Model systems are designed to capture the decision policy for the service designer and the service manager. A double Lens Model system is used to compare the perspectives. Finally, this research suggests a new role for the customer in the design by applying an Asset-Based approach. Asset-based System Engineering (ABSE) is a recently introduced concept that attempts to synthesize systems around their key assets and strengths. ABSE is developed with as an innovative approach that views customers as a primary asset. Customer integration in the design process is achieved through several new service design tools

    Using Decision-Making Techniques in Support of Simulation Training Transfer Selections

    A general methodological approach for determining the selection of military training simulations with respect to military training requirements has not been developed. This thesis undertakes a literature review, which indicated that there was a need for a multi-criteria decision making model to assist acquisition and/or training planners in making training selection decisions. The Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) Model was selected from a multi-criteria decision-making model candidate list for evaluation of its efficacy in selecting military training simulations based upon the military training requirements. Four separate trainee populations, Alpha, Beta, Charlie, and Delta, were evaluated. Results from the Alpha study case showed evidence of the AHP model providing consistency between the participants\u27 preferred choice and their demographic background. This indicates that the AHP model may be a useful multi-criteria decision-making method for acquisition and/or training planners. These results indicate that decision-makers should: I) allow for more than a low-level of effort on the front-end when creating the necessary AHP input, 2) reflect on the selection of attributes as a critical step in establishing the AHP model hierarchy, and 3) consider the level of detail needed for input into the AHP model. Further, results from the Beta, Charlie, and Delta populations indicate that an approach has been developed which is consistent across groups and displays strong alternative preferences that are consistent

    Text–to–Video: Image Semantics and NLP

    When aiming at automatically translating an arbitrary text into a visual story, the main challenge consists in finding a semantically close visual representation whereby the displayed meaning should remain the same as in the given text. Besides, the appearance of an image itself largely influences how its meaningful information is transported towards an observer. This thesis now demonstrates that investigating in both, image semantics as well as the semantic relatedness between visual and textual sources enables us to tackle the challenging semantic gap and to find a semantically close translation from natural language to a corresponding visual representation. Within the last years, social networking became of high interest leading to an enormous and still increasing amount of online available data. Photo sharing sites like Flickr allow users to associate textual information with their uploaded imagery. Thus, this thesis exploits this huge knowledge source of user generated data providing initial links between images and words, and other meaningful data. In order to approach visual semantics, this work presents various methods to analyze the visual structure as well as the appearance of images in terms of meaningful similarities, aesthetic appeal, and emotional effect towards an observer. In detail, our GPU-based approach efficiently finds visual similarities between images in large datasets across visual domains and identifies various meanings for ambiguous words exploring similarity in online search results. Further, we investigate in the highly subjective aesthetic appeal of images and make use of deep learning to directly learn aesthetic rankings from a broad diversity of user reactions in social online behavior. To gain even deeper insights into the influence of visual appearance towards an observer, we explore how simple image processing is capable of actually changing the emotional perception and derive a simple but effective image filter. To identify meaningful connections between written text and visual representations, we employ methods from Natural Language Processing (NLP). Extensive textual processing allows us to create semantically relevant illustrations for simple text elements as well as complete storylines. More precisely, we present an approach that resolves dependencies in textual descriptions to arrange 3D models correctly. Further, we develop a method that finds semantically relevant illustrations to texts of different types based on a novel hierarchical querying algorithm. Finally, we present an optimization based framework that is capable of not only generating semantically relevant but also visually coherent picture stories in different styles.Bei der automatischen Umwandlung eines beliebigen Textes in eine visuelle Geschichte, besteht die größte Herausforderung darin eine semantisch passende visuelle Darstellung zu finden. Dabei sollte die Bedeutung der Darstellung dem vorgegebenen Text entsprechen. Darüber hinaus hat die Erscheinung eines Bildes einen großen Einfluß darauf, wie seine bedeutungsvollen Inhalte auf einen Betrachter übertragen werden. Diese Dissertation zeigt, dass die Erforschung sowohl der Bildsemantik als auch der semantischen Verbindung zwischen visuellen und textuellen Quellen es ermöglicht, die anspruchsvolle semantische Lücke zu schließen und eine semantisch nahe Übersetzung von natürlicher Sprache in eine entsprechend sinngemäße visuelle Darstellung zu finden. Des Weiteren gewann die soziale Vernetzung in den letzten Jahren zunehmend an Bedeutung, was zu einer enormen und immer noch wachsenden Menge an online verfügbaren Daten geführt hat. Foto-Sharing-Websites wie Flickr ermöglichen es Benutzern, Textinformationen mit ihren hochgeladenen Bildern zu verknüpfen. Die vorliegende Arbeit nutzt die enorme Wissensquelle von benutzergenerierten Daten welche erste Verbindungen zwischen Bildern und Wörtern sowie anderen aussagekräftigen Daten zur Verfügung stellt. Zur Erforschung der visuellen Semantik stellt diese Arbeit unterschiedliche Methoden vor, um die visuelle Struktur sowie die Wirkung von Bildern in Bezug auf bedeutungsvolle Ähnlichkeiten, ästhetische Erscheinung und emotionalem Einfluss auf einen Beobachter zu analysieren. Genauer gesagt, findet unser GPU-basierter Ansatz effizient visuelle Ähnlichkeiten zwischen Bildern in großen Datenmengen quer über visuelle Domänen hinweg und identifiziert verschiedene Bedeutungen für mehrdeutige Wörter durch die Erforschung von Ähnlichkeiten in Online-Suchergebnissen. Des Weiteren wird die höchst subjektive ästhetische Anziehungskraft von Bildern untersucht und "deep learning" genutzt, um direkt ästhetische Einordnungen aus einer breiten Vielfalt von Benutzerreaktionen im sozialen Online-Verhalten zu lernen. Um noch tiefere Erkenntnisse über den Einfluss des visuellen Erscheinungsbildes auf einen Betrachter zu gewinnen, wird erforscht, wie alleinig einfache Bildverarbeitung in der Lage ist, tatsächlich die emotionale Wahrnehmung zu verändern und ein einfacher aber wirkungsvoller Bildfilter davon abgeleitet werden kann. Um bedeutungserhaltende Verbindungen zwischen geschriebenem Text und visueller Darstellung zu ermitteln, werden Methoden des "Natural Language Processing (NLP)" verwendet, die der Verarbeitung natürlicher Sprache dienen. Der Einsatz umfangreicher Textverarbeitung ermöglicht es, semantisch relevante Illustrationen für einfache Textteile sowie für komplette Handlungsstränge zu erzeugen. Im Detail wird ein Ansatz vorgestellt, der Abhängigkeiten in Textbeschreibungen auflöst, um 3D-Modelle korrekt anzuordnen. Des Weiteren wird eine Methode entwickelt die, basierend auf einem neuen hierarchischen Such-Anfrage Algorithmus, semantisch relevante Illustrationen zu Texten verschiedener Art findet. Schließlich wird ein optimierungsbasiertes Framework vorgestellt, das nicht nur semantisch relevante, sondern auch visuell kohärente Bildgeschichten in verschiedenen Bildstilen erzeugen kann

    SPECTRUM-BASED AND COLLABORATIVE NETWORK TOPOLOGY ANALYSIS AND VISUALIZATION

    Networks are of significant importance in many application domains, such as World Wide Web and social networks, which often embed rich topological information. Since network topology captures the organization of network nodes and links, studying net- work topology is very important to network analysis. In this dissertation, we study networks by analyzing their topology structure to explore community structure, the relationship among network members and links as well as their importance to the belonged communities. We provide new network visualization methods by studying network topology through two aspects: spectrum-based and collaborative visualiza- tion techniques. For the spectrum-based network visualization, we use eigenvalues and eigenvectors to express network topological features instead of using network datasets directly. We provide a visual analytics approach to analyze unsigned networks based on re- cent achievements on spectrum-based analysis techniques which utilize the features of node distribution and coordinates in the high dimensional spectral space. To assist the interactive exploration of network topologies, we have designed network visual- ization and interactive analysis methods allowing users to explore the global topology structure. Further, to address the question of real-life applications involving of both positive and negative relationships, we present a spectral analysis framework to study both signed and unsigned networks. Our framework concentrates on two problems of net- work analysis - what are the important spectral patterns and how to use them to study signed networks. Based on the framework, we present visual analysis methods, which guide the selection of k-dimensional spectral space and interactive exploration of network topology. With the increasing complexity and volume of dynamic networks, it is important to adopt strategies of joint decision-making through developing collaborative visualiza- tion approaches. Thus, we design and develop a collaborative detection mechanism with matrix visualization for complex intrusion detection applications. We establish a set of collaboration guidelines for team coordination with distributed visualization tools. We apply them to generate a prototype system with interactions that facilitates collaborative visual analysis. In order to evaluate the collaborative detection mechanism, a formal user study is presented. The user study monitored participants to collaborate under co-located and distributed collaboration environments to tackle the problems of intrusion detection. We have observed participants’ behaviors and collected their performances from the aspects of coordination and communication. Based on the results, we conclude several coordination strategies and summarize the values of communication for collaborative visualization. Our visualization methods have been demonstrated to be efficient topology explo- ration with both synthetic and real-life datasets in spectrum-based and collaborative exploration. We believe that our methods can provide useful information for future design and development of network topology visualization system

    WEATHER LORE VALIDATION TOOL USING FUZZY COGNITIVE MAPS BASED ON COMPUTER VISION

    Published ThesisThe creation of scientific weather forecasts is troubled by many technological challenges (Stern & Easterling, 1999) while their utilization is generally dismal. Consequently, the majority of small-scale farmers in Africa continue to consult some forms of weather lore to reach various cropping decisions (Baliscan, 2001). Weather lore is a body of informal folklore (Enock, 2013), associated with the prediction of the weather, and based on indigenous knowledge and human observation of the environment. As such, it tends to be more holistic, and more localized to the farmers’ context. However, weather lore has limitations; for instance, it has an inability to offer forecasts beyond a season. Different types of weather lore exist, utilizing almost all available human senses (feel, smell, sight and hearing). Out of all the types of weather lore in existence, it is the visual or observed weather lore that is mostly used by indigenous societies, to come up with weather predictions. On the other hand, meteorologists continue to treat this knowledge as superstition, partly because there is no means to scientifically evaluate and validate it. The visualization and characterization of visual sky objects (such as moon, clouds, stars, and rainbows) in forecasting weather are significant subjects of research. To realize the integration of visual weather lore in modern weather forecasting systems, there is a need to represent and scientifically substantiate this form of knowledge. This research was aimed at developing a method for verifying visual weather lore that is used by traditional communities to predict weather conditions. To realize this verification, fuzzy cognitive mapping was used to model and represent causal relationships between selected visual weather lore concepts and weather conditions. The traditional knowledge used to produce these maps was attained through case studies of two communities (in Kenya and South Africa).These case studies were aimed at understanding the weather lore domain as well as the causal effects between metrological and visual weather lore. In this study, common astronomical weather lore factors related to cloud physics were identified as: bright stars, dispersed clouds, dry weather, dull stars, feathery clouds, gathering clouds, grey clouds, high clouds, layered clouds, low clouds, stars, medium clouds, and rounded clouds. Relationships between the concepts were also identified and formally represented using fuzzy cognitive maps. On implementing the verification tool, machine vision was used to recognize sky objects captured using a sky camera, while pattern recognition was employed in benchmarking and scoring the objects. A wireless weather station was used to capture real-time weather parameters. The visualization tool was then designed and realized in a form of software artefact, which integrated both computer vision and fuzzy cognitive mapping for experimenting visual weather lore, and verification using various statistical forecast skills and metrics. The tool consists of four main sub-components: (1) Machine vision that recognizes sky objects using support vector machine classifiers using shape-based feature descriptors; (2) Pattern recognition–to benchmark and score objects using pixel orientations, Euclidean distance, canny and grey-level concurrence matrix; (3) Fuzzy cognitive mapping that was used to represent knowledge (i.e. active hebbian learning algorithm was used to learn until convergence); and (4) A statistical computing component was used for verifications and forecast skills including brier score and contingency tables for deterministic forecasts. Rigorous evaluation of the verification tool was carried out using independent (not used in the training and testing phases) real-time images from Bloemfontein, South Africa, and Voi-Kenya. The real-time images were captured using a sky camera with GPS location services. The results of the implementation were tested for the selected weather conditions (for example, rain, heat, cold, and dry conditions), and found to be acceptable (the verified prediction accuracies were over 80%). The recommendation in this study is to apply the implemented method for processing tasks, towards verifying all other types of visual weather lore. In addition, the use of the method developed also requires the implementation of modules for processing and verifying other types of weather lore, such as sounds, and symbols of nature. Since time immemorial, from Australia to Asia, Africa to Latin America, local communities have continued to rely on weather lore observations to predict seasonal weather as well as its effects on their livelihoods (Alcock, 2014). This is mainly based on many years of personal experiences in observing weather conditions. However, when it comes to predictions for longer lead-times (i.e. over a season), weather lore is uncertain (Hornidge & Antweiler, 2012). This uncertainty has partly contributed to the current status where meteorologists and other scientists continue to treat weather lore as superstition (United-Nations, 2004), and not capable of predicting weather. One of the problems in testing the confidence in weather lore in predicting weather is due to wide varieties of weather lore that are found in the details of indigenous sayings, which are tightly coupled to locality and pattern variations(Oviedo et al., 2008). This traditional knowledge is entrenched within the day-to-day socio-economic activities of the communities using it and is not globally available for comparison and validation (Huntington, Callaghan, Fox, & Krupnik, 2004). Further, this knowledge is based on local experience that lacks benchmarking techniques; so that harmonizing and integrating it within the science-based weather forecasting systems is a daunting task (Hornidge & Antweiler, 2012). It is partly for this reason that the question of validation of weather lore has not yet been substantially investigated. Sufficient expanded processes of gathering weather observations, combined with comparison and validation, can produce some useful information. Since forecasting weather accurately is a challenge even with the latest supercomputers (BBC News Magazine, 2013), validated weather lore can be useful if it is incorporated into modern weather prediction systems. Validation of traditional knowledge is a necessary step in the management of building integrated knowledge-based systems. Traditional knowledge incorporated into knowledge-based systems has to be verified for enhancing systems’ reliability. Weather lore knowledge exists in different forms as identified by traditional communities; hence it needs to be tied together for comparison and validation. The development of a weather lore validation tool that can integrate a framework for acquiring weather data and methods of representing the weather lore in verifiable forms can be a significant step in the validation of weather lore against actual weather records using conventional weather-observing instruments. The success of validating weather lore could stimulate the opportunity for integrating acceptable weather lore with modern systems of weather prediction to improve actionable information for decision making that relies on seasonal weather prediction. In this study a hybrid method is developed that includes computer vision and fuzzy cognitive mapping techniques for verifying visual weather lore. The verification tool was designed with forecasting based on mimicking visual perception, and fuzzy thinking based on the cognitive knowledge of humans. The method provides meaning to humanly perceivable sky objects so that computers can understand, interpret, and approximate visual weather outcomes. Questionnaires were administered in two case study locations (KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa, and Taita-Taveta County in Kenya), between the months of March and July 2015. The two case studies were conducted by interviewing respondents on how visual astronomical and meteorological weather concepts cause weather outcomes. The two case studies were used to identify causal effects of visual astronomical and meteorological objects to weather conditions. This was followed by finding variations and comparisons, between the visual weather lore knowledge in the two case studies. The results from the two case studies were aggregated in terms of seasonal knowledge. The causal links between visual weather concepts were investigated using these two case studies; results were compared and aggregated to build up common knowledge. The joint averages of the majority of responses from the case studies were determined for each set of interacting concepts. The modelling of the weather lore verification tool consists of input, processing components and output. The input data to the system are sky image scenes and actual weather observations from wireless weather sensors. The image recognition component performs three sub-tasks, including: detection of objects (concepts) from image scenes, extraction of detected objects, and approximation of the presence of the concepts by comparing extracted objects to ideal objects. The prediction process involves the use of approximated concepts generated in the recognition component to simulate scenarios using the knowledge represented in the fuzzy cognitive maps. The verification component evaluates the variation between the predictions and actual weather observations to determine prediction errors and accuracy. To evaluate the tool, daily system simulations were run to predict and record probabilities of weather outcomes (i.e. rain, heat index/hotness, dry, cold index). Weather observations were captured periodically using a wireless weather station. This process was repeated several times until there was sufficient data to use for the verification process. To match the range of the predicted weather outcomes, the actual weather observations (measurement) were transformed and normalized to a range [0, 1].In the verification process, comparisons were made between the actual observations and weather outcome prediction values by computing residuals (error values) from the observations. The error values and the squared error were used to compute the Mean Squared Error (MSE), and the Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), for each predicted weather outcome. Finally, the validity of the visual weather lore verification model was assessed using data from a different geographical location. Actual data in the form of daily sky scenes and weather parameters were acquired from Voi, Kenya, from December 2015 to January 2016.The results on the use of hybrid techniques for verification of weather lore is expected to provide an incentive in integrating indigenous knowledge on weather with modern numerical weather prediction systems for accurate and downscaled weather forecasts
