A DSP Based H.264 Decoder for a Multi-Format IP Set-Top Box
In this paper, the implementation of a digital signal processor (DSP) based H.264 decoder for a multi-format set-top box is described. Baseline and main profiles are supported. Using several software optimization techniques, the decoder has been fitted into a low-cost DSP. The decoder alone has been tested in simulation, achieving real-time performance with a 600 MHz system clock. Moreover, it has been integrated in a multi-format IP set-top box allowing the implementation of actual environment tests with excellent results. Finally, the decoder has been ported to a latest generation DSP
A DSP based SVC IP STB using open SVC decoder
International audienceIn this paper, a implementation of a DSP-based IP set-top box (IP-STB) to decode CIF sequences compliant with the new Scalable Video Coding standard (14496-10 Amd 3) using Open SVC Decoder (OSD) is presented. The OSD software, designed for the PC environment, has been integrated into a previously developed IP-STB prototype. About 15 CIF frames per second can be decoded with the IP-STB

Multimedia broadcast and internet satellite system design and user trial results
The EU funded project, System for Advanced Multimedia Broadcast
and IT Services (SAMBITS), has created an enhanced and synchronised,
multimedia terminal for merging satellite broadcast and internet
telecommunication services in a way that efficiently combines the large
bandwidth of the broadcast channel and the interactivity of the internet.
This paper proposes a novel broadcast and internet service concept, illustrates
this concept with two service scenarios and develops a system architecture to
demonstrate the range of key benefits provided by these new technologies.
It then describes the interactive multimedia terminal that was used for
consuming this new service concept. Finally, the results of the user trials on the
terminal are presented and discussed

High-Speed Communications Over Polymer Optical Fibers for In-Building Cabling and Home Networking
This paper focuses on high-speed cabling using polymer optical fibers (POF) in home networking. In particular, we report about the results obtained in the POF-ALL European Project, which is relevant to the Sixth Framework Program, and after two years of the European Project POF-PLUS, which is relevant to the Seventh Framework Program, focusing on their research activities about the use of poly-metyl-metha-acrilate step-index optical fibers for home applications. In particular, for that which concerns POF-ALL, we will describe eight-level pulse amplitude modulation (8-PAM) and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) approaches for 100-Mb/s transmission over a target distance of 300 m, while for that which concerns POF-PLUS, we will describe a fully digital and a mixed analog-digital solution, both based on intensity modulation direct detection, for transmitting 1 Gb/s over a target distance of 50 m. The ultimate experimental results from the POF-ALL project will be given, while for POF-PLUS, which is still ongoing, we will only show our most recent preliminary results
