Despite the increased efficiency of computers and the proliferation of algorithms, the problem of finding good and quickly solutions in the case of large systems remains open. Recently, efficient computation techniques have been recognized as significant advances to solve the problem during a reasonable period of time. However, they are applicable to a special category of networks and more efforts still necessary to generalize a unified method giving exact solution. Assessing the reliability of networks is a very complex combinatorial problem which requires powerful computing resources. Several methods have been proposed in the literature. Some have been implemented including minimal sets enumeration and factoring methods, and others remained as simple theories. This thesis treats the case of networks reliability evaluation and optimization. Several issues were discussed including the development of a methodology for modeling networks and evaluating their reliabilities. This methodology was validated as part of a radio communication network project. In this work, some algorithms have been developed to generate minimal paths and cuts for a given network. The generation of paths and cuts is an important contribution in the process of networks reliability and optimization. These algorithms have been subsequently used to assess reliability by a method based on binary decision diagrams. Several theoretical contributions have been proposed and helped to establish an exact solution of the stochastic networks reliability in which edges and nodes are subject to failure using factoring decomposition theorem. From this research activity, several tools have been implemented and results clearly show a significant gain in time execution and memory space used by comparison to many other implementations. Techniques for the Fast Simulation of Models of Highly dependable Systems

With the ever-increasing complexity and requirements of highly dependable systems, their evaluation during design and operation is becoming more crucial. Realistic models of such systems are often not amenable to analysis using conventional analytic or numerical methods. Therefore, analysts and designers turn to simulation to evaluate these models. However, accurate estimation of dependability measures of these models requires that the simulation frequently observes system failures, which are rare events in highly dependable systems. This renders ordinary Simulation impractical for evaluating such systems. To overcome this problem, simulation techniques based on importance sampling have been developed, and are very effective in certain settings. When importance sampling works well, simulation run lengths can be reduced by several orders of magnitude when estimating transient as well as steady-state dependability measures. This paper reviews some of the importance-sampling techniques that have been developed in recent years to estimate dependability measures efficiently in Markov and nonMarkov models of highly dependable system

Integrated Scenario-Based Methodology for Project Risk Management

    Get PDF
Project risk management is currently used in several industries and mandated by government acquisition agencies around the world to manage uncertainty in an effort to improve a project's probability of success. Common practice involves developing a list of risk items scored with probability and consequence ordinal scales by committee usually focusing on cost and schedule issues. A scenario based process modeling construct is introduced using a hybrid Probabilistic Risk Assessment and Decision Analysis framework integrating project development risks with operational system risks. Project management's decisions are explicitly modeled and ranked based on risk importance to the project. Multiple consequence attributes are unified providing a basis for computing total project risk. This study shows that such an approach leads to an analysis system where scenarios tracing risk items to many possible consequences are explicitly understood; the interaction between cost, schedule, and performance models drive the analysis; probabilities for overruns, delays, increased system hazards are determined directly; and state-of-the-art quantification techniques are directly applicable. All these enhance project management's capability to respond with more effective decisions

The paper addresses the reliability problem of mobile ad hoc networks under link and node failure model. Node reliability is calculated as a function of no. of neighbor nodes, packet success rate, and device type and packet size. The presence of a link between any node pair is binary and its reliability is computed considering the distance between nodes and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). An efficient algorithm is proposed to analyze and calculate the reliability of mobile ad hoc networks considering multiple routes from source and destination nodes. The effect of different parameters on node reliability and link reliability are analyzed and discussed. The network is simulated and analyzed using INET frame work. Reliability of two distinct cases of this simulation is evaluated. The simulated results and discussions ensure that evaluation of the reliability of any mobile ad hoc networks can be done easily and in an efficient manner by the proposed method

The problem of stability analysis and its components of reliability and survivability is quite popular both in the field of telecommunications and in other industries involved in the development and operation of complex networks. The most suitable network model for this type of problem is a model that uses the postulates of graph theory. At the same time, the assumption of the random nature of failures of individual links of the telecommunications network allows it to be considered in the form of a generalized Erdos–Renyi model. It is well known that the probability of failure of elements can be interpreted in the form of a readiness coefficient and an operational readiness coefficient, as well as in the form of other indicators that characterize the performance of elements of a telecommunications network. Most approaches consider only the case of bipolar connectivity, when it is necessary to ensure the interaction of two end destinations. In modern telecommunications networks, services such as virtual private networks come to the fore, for which multipoint connections are organized that do not fit into the concept of bipolar connectivity. In this regard, we propose to extend this approach to the analysis of multi-pole and all-pole connections. The approach for two-pole connectivity is based on a method that uses the connectivity matrix as a basis, and, in fact, assumes a sequential search of all combinations of vertex sections, starting from the source and drain. This method leads to the inclusion of non-minimal cross-sections in the general composition, which required the introduction of an additional procedure for checking the added cross-section for non-excess. The approach for all-pole connectivity is based on a method that uses the connectivity matrix as a basis, and, in fact, assumes a sequential search of all combinations of vertex sections, not including one of the vertices considered terminal. A simpler solution was to control the added section for uniqueness. The approach for multipolar connectivity is similar to that used in the formation of the set of minimal all-pole sections and differs only in the procedure for selecting the combinations used to form the cross-section matrix, of which only those containing pole vertices are preserved. As a test communication network, the Rostelecom backbone network is used, deployed to form flows in the direction of "Europe-Asia". It is shown that multipolar sections are the most general concept with respect to two-pole and all-pole sections. despite the possibility of such a generalization, in practical applications it is advisable to consider particular cases due to their lower computational complexity. Adaptive Three-Stage Controlled Islanding to Prevent Imminent Wide-area Blackouts

Power blackouts are a recurring problem worldwide, and research in this area continues to focus on developing improved methods for their prediction and prevention. Controlled islanding has been proposed as a last resort action to save the network before imminent blackouts when the usual means fail in an unexpected manner. Successful controlled islanding has to deal with three important issues that are involved in the implementation of islanding: when to island, where to island and what to do after islanding is implemented in each island. This thesis presents a framework that combines all three issues to achieve successful islanding based on wide area measurement systems (WAMS). In addition, this thesis focuses on the question of when to island. This question is critical to the success of the three-stage controlled islanding scheme because the possible issues of false dismissal and false alarm have to be handled. In false dismissal, islanding is triggered too late. However, the potentially unstable system is still allowed to operate, and this unstable system, which could have survived, may cause uncontrolled cascading blackouts. In false alarm, islanding is triggered too early, and an originally stable system is forced to split into islands, resulting in unnecessary disruption and economic loss. Thus, the early recognition and identification of “the point of no return” before blackout is inevitable. The single machine equivalent (SIME) method is adopted online to predict transient stability during cascading outages that would shortly lead to blackouts, giving support in decisions about when to island in terms of transient instability. SIME also evaluates dynamic stability after islanding and ensures that the selected island candidates are stable before action is taken. Moreover, in this thesis, the power flow tracing-based method provides all possible islanding cutsets, and SIME helps to identify the one that has the best transient stability and minimal power flow disruption. If no possible island cut set exists, corrective actions through tripping critical generators or load shedding are undertaken in each island. The IEEE 10-generator, 39-busbar power system and 16-generator 68-busbar system are used to demonstrate the entire framework of the controlled islanding scheme. The performance of each methodology involved in each stage is then presented

Tribunal : Kishor S. Trivedi, Guillermo Durán, Sergio Nesmachnow, Reinaldo Vallejos, Gerardo Rubino, Bruno Tuffin.

    Multiagent autonomous energy management

The objective of this thesis is to design distributed software agents for reliable operation of integrated electric power systems of modern electric warships. The automatic reconfiguration of electric shipboard power systems is an important step toward improved fight-through and self-healing capabilities of naval warships. The improvements are conceptualized by redesigning the electric power system and its controls. This research focuses on a new scheme for an energy management system in the form of distributed control/software agents. Multiagent systems provide an ideal level of abstraction for modeling complex applications where distributed and heterogeneous entities need to cooperate to achieve a common goal. The agents\u27 task is to ensure supply of the various load demands while taking into consideration system constraints and load and supply path priorities. A self-stabilizing maximum flow algorithm is investigated to allow implementation of the agents\u27 strategies and find a global solution by only considering local information and a minimum amount of communication.
