    An Evaluation of the X10 Programming Language

    As predicted by Moore\u27s law, the number of transistors on a chip has been doubled approximately every two years. As miraculous as it sounds, for many years, the extra transistors have massively benefited the whole computer industry, by using the extra transistors to increase CPU clock speed, thus boosting performance. However, due to heat wall and power constraints, the clock speed cannot be increased limitlessly. Hardware vendors now have to take another path other than increasing clock speed, which is to utilize the transistors to increase the number of processor cores on each chip. This hardware structural change presents inevitable challenges to software structure, where single thread targeted software will not benefit from newer chips or may even suffer from lower clock speed. The two fundamental challenges are: 1. How to deal with the stagnation of single core clock speed and cache memory. 2. How to utilize the additional power generated from more cores on a chip. Most software programming languages nowadays have distributed computing support, such as C and Java [1]. Meanwhile, some new programming languages were invented from scratch just to take advantage of the more distributed hardware structures. The X10 Programming Language is one of them.     Anytime system level verification via parallel random exhaustive hardware in the loop simulation

    System level verification of cyber-physical systems has the goal of verifying that the whole (i.e., software + hardware) system meets the given specifications. Model checkers for hybrid systems cannot handle system level verification of actual systems. Thus, Hardware In the Loop Simulation (HILS) is currently the main workhorse for system level verification. By using model checking driven exhaustive HILS, System Level Formal Verification (SLFV) can be effectively carried out for actual systems. We present a parallel random exhaustive HILS based model checker for hybrid systems that, by simulating all operational scenarios exactly once in a uniform random order, is able to provide, at any time during the verification process, an upper bound to the probability that the System Under Verification exhibits an error in a yet-to-be-simulated scenario (Omission Probability). We show effectiveness of the proposed approach by presenting experimental results on SLFV of the Inverted Pendulum on a Cart and the Fuel Control System examples in the Simulink distribution. To the best of our knowledge, no previously published model checker can exhaustively verify hybrid systems of such a size and provide at any time an upper bound to the Omission Probability

    In recent years, program verifiers and interactive theorem provers have become more powerful and more suitable for verifying large programs or proofs. This has demonstrated the need for improving the user experience of these tools to increase productivity and to make them more accessible to non-experts. This paper presents an integrated development environment for Dafny-a programming language, verifier, and proof assistant-that addresses issues present in most state-of-the-art verifiers: low responsiveness and lack of support for understanding non-obvious verification failures. The paper demonstrates several new features that move the state-of-the-art closer towards a verification environment that can provide verification feedback as the user types and can present more helpful information about the program or failed verifications in a demand-driven and unobtrusive way.Comment: In Proceedings F-IDE 2014, arXiv:1404.578

    Investigations into the feasibility of an on-line test methodology

    This thesis aims to understand how information coding and the protocol that it supports can affect the characteristics of electronic circuits. More specifically, it investigates an on-line test methodology called IFIS (If it Fails It Stops) and its impact on the design, implementation and subsequent characteristics of circuits intended for application specific lC (ASIC) technology. The first study investigates the influences of information coding and protocol on the characteristics of IFIS systems. The second study investigates methods of circuit design applicable to IFIS cells and identifies the· technique possessing the characteristics most suitable for on-line testing. The third study investigates the characteristics of a 'real-life' commercial UART re-engineered using the techniques resulting from the previous two studies. The final study investigates the effects of the halting properties endowed by the protocol on failure diagnosis within IFIS systems. The outcome of this work is an identification and characterisation of the factors that influence behaviour, implementation costs and the ability to test and diagnose IFIS designs

    Design of CMOS PSCD circuits and checkers for stuck-at and stuck-on faults

    [[abstract]]We present in this paper an approach to designing partially strongly code-disjoint (PSCD) CMOS circuits and checkers, considering transistor stuck-on faults in addition to gate-level stuck-at faults. Our design-for-testability (DFT) technique requires only a small number of extra transistors for monitoring abnormal static currents, coupled with a simple clocking scheme, to detect the stuck-on faults concurrently. The DFT circuitry not only can detect the faults in the functional circuit but also can detect or tolerate faults in itself, making it a good candidate for checker design. Switch and circuit level simulations were performed on a sample circuit, and a sample 4-out-of-8 code checker chip using the proposed technique has been designed, fabricated, and tested, showing the correctness of the method.     Reliable Hardware Architectures of CORDIC Algorithm with Fixed Angle of Rotations

    Fixed-angle rotation operation of vectors is widely used in signal processing, graphics, and robotics. Various optimized coordinate rotation digital computer (CORDIC) designs have been proposed for uniform rotation of vectors through known and specified angles. Nevertheless, in the presence of faults, such hardware architectures are potentially vulnerable. In this thesis, we propose efficient error detection schemes for two fixed-angle rotation designs, i.e., the Interleaved Scaling and Cascaded Single-rotation CORDIC. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first in providing reliable architectures for these variants of CORDIC. The former is suitable for low-area applications and, hence, we propose recomputing with encoded operands schemes which add negligible area overhead to the designs. Moreover, the proposed error detection schemes for the latter variant are optimized for efficient applications which hamper the performance of the architectures negligibly. We present three variants of recomputing with encoded operands to detect both transient and permanent faults, coupled with signature-based schemes. The overheads of the proposed designs are assessed through Xilinx FPGA implementations and their effectiveness is benchmarked through error simulations. The results give confidence for the proposed efficient architectures which can be tailored based on the reliability requirements and the overhead to be tolerated

    Advanced flight control system study

    A fly by wire flight control system architecture designed for high reliability includes spare sensor and computer elements to permit safe dispatch with failed elements, thereby reducing unscheduled maintenance. A methodology capable of demonstrating that the architecture does achieve the predicted performance characteristics consists of a hierarchy of activities ranging from analytical calculations of system reliability and formal methods of software verification to iron bird testing followed by flight evaluation. Interfacing this architecture to the Lockheed S-3A aircraft for flight test is discussed. This testbed vehicle can be expanded to support flight experiments in advanced aerodynamics, electromechanical actuators, secondary power systems, flight management, new displays, and air traffic control concepts
