The Case for Quantum Key Distribution
Quantum key distribution (QKD) promises secure key agreement by using quantum
mechanical systems. We argue that QKD will be an important part of future
cryptographic infrastructures. It can provide long-term confidentiality for
encrypted information without reliance on computational assumptions. Although
QKD still requires authentication to prevent man-in-the-middle attacks, it can
make use of either information-theoretically secure symmetric key
authentication or computationally secure public key authentication: even when
using public key authentication, we argue that QKD still offers stronger
security than classical key agreement.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure; to appear in proceedings of QuantumComm 2009

ARIES WP3 – Needs and Requirements Analyses
Information and communication technologies have increasingly
influenced and changed our daily life. They allow global
connectivity and easy access to distributed applications and
digital services over the Internet. This report analysis security requirements on trust establishment and trust evaluation based on two different use case scenarios: "Trusted Communication using COTS" and "Trust Establishment for Cross-organizational Crises Management". A systematic needs analysis is performed on both scenarios which haver resulted in a large and well documented set of requirements. This is the first step in a large effort to define a security architecture for the two use case scenarios.
Timed Analysis of Security Protocols
We propose a method for engineering security protocols that are aware of
timing aspects. We study a simplified version of the well-known Needham
Schroeder protocol and the complete Yahalom protocol, where timing information
allows the study of different attack scenarios. We model check the protocols
using UPPAAL. Further, a taxonomy is obtained by studying and categorising
protocols from the well known Clark Jacob library and the Security Protocol
Open Repository (SPORE) library. Finally, we present some new challenges and
threats that arise when considering time in the analysis, by providing a novel
protocol that uses time challenges and exposing a timing attack over an
implementation of an existing security protocol
An Outline of Security in Wireless Sensor Networks: Threats, Countermeasures and Implementations
With the expansion of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), the need for securing
the data flow through these networks is increasing. These sensor networks allow
for easy-to-apply and flexible installations which have enabled them to be used
for numerous applications. Due to these properties, they face distinct
information security threats. Security of the data flowing through across
networks provides the researchers with an interesting and intriguing potential
for research. Design of these networks to ensure the protection of data faces
the constraints of limited power and processing resources. We provide the
basics of wireless sensor network security to help the researchers and
engineers in better understanding of this applications field. In this chapter,
we will provide the basics of information security with special emphasis on
WSNs. The chapter will also give an overview of the information security
requirements in these networks. Threats to the security of data in WSNs and
some of their counter measures are also presented
