    The discrete dynamics of small-scale spatial events: agent-based models of mobility in carnivals and street parades

    Small-scale spatial events are situations in which elements or objects vary in such away that temporal dynamics is intrinsic to their representation and explanation. Someof the clearest examples involve local movement from conventional traffic modelingto disaster evacuation where congestion, crowding, panic, and related safety issue arekey features of such events. We propose that such events can be simulated using newvariants of pedestrian model, which embody ideas about how behavior emerges fromthe accumulated interactions between small-scale objects. We present a model inwhich the event space is first explored by agents using ?swarm intelligence?. Armedwith information about the space, agents then move in an unobstructed fashion to theevent. Congestion and problems over safety are then resolved through introducingcontrols in an iterative fashion and rerunning the model until a ?safe solution? isreached. The model has been developed to simulate the effect of changing the route ofthe Notting Hill Carnival, an annual event held in west central London over 2 days inAugust each year. One of the key issues in using such simulation is how the processof modeling interacts with those who manage and control the event. As such, thischanges the nature of the modeling problem from one where control and optimizationis external to the model to one where this is intrinsic to the simulation

    Smartphone Based Detection of Vehicle Encounters

    Riding a bicycle in shared traffic alongside motor vehicles causes discomfort or even stress for many cyclists. Avoiding busy or crowded roads is only possible with good local knowledge, as no data is available on the frequency of encounters with motor vehicles for most roads. Acquiring a data set that combines smartphone sensor data with known vehicle encounters can become the foundation for a smartphone based moving vehicle detector. Therefore, readings from the omnipresent smartphone sensors magnetometer and barometer can be exploited as indicators of passing vehicles. In this paper, a novel approach is presented to detect vehicle encounters in smartphone sensor data. For this purpose, a modular mobile sensor platform is first constructed and set up to collect smartphone, camera and ultrasonic sensor data in real traffic scenarios. The platform is designed to be used with various sensor configurations to serve a broader set of use cases in the future. In the presented use case, the platform is constructed to create a reference data set of vehicle encounters consisting of location information, direction, distance, speed and further metadata. To this end, a methodology is presented to process the collected camera images and ultrasonic distance data. Furthermore, two smartphones are used to collect raw data from their magnetometer and barometric sensor. Based on both, the reference and the smartphones’ data set, a classifier for the detection of vehicle encounters is then trained to operate on pure smartphone sensor data. Experiments on real data show that a Random Forest classifier can be successfully applied to recorded smartphone sensor data. The results prove that the presented approach is able to detect overtaking vehicle encounters with a F1-score of 71.0 %, which is sufficient to rank different cycling routes by their ’stress factor’

    Seamless Interactions Between Humans and Mobility Systems

    As mobility systems, including vehicles and roadside infrastructure, enter a period of rapid and profound change, it is important to enhance interactions between people and mobility systems. Seamless human—mobility system interactions can promote widespread deployment of engaging applications, which are crucial for driving safety and efficiency. The ever-increasing penetration rate of ubiquitous computing devices, such as smartphones and wearable devices, can facilitate realization of this goal. Although researchers and developers have attempted to adapt ubiquitous sensors for mobility applications (e.g., navigation apps), these solutions often suffer from limited usability and can be risk-prone. The root causes of these limitations include the low sensing modality and limited computational power available in ubiquitous computing devices. We address these challenges by developing and demonstrating that novel sensing techniques and machine learning can be applied to extract essential, safety-critical information from drivers natural driving behavior, even actions as subtle as steering maneuvers (e.g., left-/righthand turns and lane changes). We first show how ubiquitous sensors can be used to detect steering maneuvers regardless of disturbances to sensing devices. Next, by focusing on turning maneuvers, we characterize drivers driving patterns using a quantifiable metric. Then, we demonstrate how microscopic analyses of crowdsourced ubiquitous sensory data can be used to infer critical macroscopic contextual information, such as risks present at road intersections. Finally, we use ubiquitous sensors to profile a driver’s behavioral patterns on a large scale; such sensors are found to be essential to the analysis and improvement of drivers driving behavior.PHDComputer Science & EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.     RiskOracle: A Minute-level Citywide Traffic Accident Forecasting Framework

    Real-time traffic accident forecasting is increasingly important for public safety and urban management (e.g., real-time safe route planning and emergency response deployment). Previous works on accident forecasting are often performed on hour levels, utilizing existed neural networks with static region-wise correlations taken into account. However, it is still challenging when the granularity of forecasting step improves as the highly dynamic nature of road network and inherent rareness of accident records in one training sample, which leads to biased results and zero-inflated issue. In this work, we propose a novel framework RiskOracle, to improve the prediction granularity to minute levels. Specifically, we first transform the zero-risk values in labels to fit the training network. Then, we propose the Differential Time-varying Graph neural network (DTGN) to capture the immediate changes of traffic status and dynamic inter-subregion correlations. Furthermore, we adopt multi-task and region selection schemes to highlight citywide most-likely accident subregions, bridging the gap between biased risk values and sporadic accident distribution.     Urban Anomaly Analytics: Description, Detection, and Prediction

    Urban anomalies may result in loss of life or property if not handled properly. Automatically alerting anomalies in their early stage or even predicting anomalies before happening is of great value for populations. Recently, data-driven urban anomaly analysis frameworks have been forming, which utilize urban big data and machine learning algorithms to detect and predict urban anomalies automatically. In this survey, we make a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art research on urban anomaly analytics. We first give an overview of four main types of urban anomalies, traffic anomaly, unexpected crowds, environment anomaly, and individual anomaly. Next, we summarize various types of urban datasets obtained from diverse devices, i.e., trajectory, trip records, CDRs, urban sensors, event records, environment data, social media and surveillance cameras. Subsequently, a comprehensive survey of issues on detecting and predicting techniques for urban anomalies is presented. Finally, research challenges and open problems as discussed.Peer reviewe

    Spatial and Temporal Sentiment Analysis of Twitter data

    The public have used Twitter world wide for expressing opinions. This study focuses on spatio-temporal variation of georeferenced Tweets’ sentiment polarity, with a view to understanding how opinions evolve on Twitter over space and time and across communities of users. More specifically, the question this study tested is whether sentiment polarity on Twitter exhibits specific time-location patterns. The aim of the study is to investigate the spatial and temporal distribution of georeferenced Twitter sentiment polarity within the area of 1 km buffer around the Curtin Bentley campus boundary in Perth, Western Australia. Tweets posted in campus were assigned into six spatial zones and four time zones. A sentiment analysis was then conducted for each zone using the sentiment analyser tool in the Starlight Visual Information System software. The Feature Manipulation Engine was employed to convert non-spatial files into spatial and temporal feature class. The spatial and temporal distribution of Twitter sentiment polarity patterns over space and time was mapped using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Some interesting results were identified. For example, the highest percentage of positive Tweets occurred in the social science area, while science and engineering and dormitory areas had the highest percentage of negative postings. The number of negative Tweets increases in the library and science and engineering areas as the end of the semester approaches, reaching a peak around an exam period, while the percentage of negative Tweets drops at the end of the semester in the entertainment and sport and dormitory area. This study will provide some insights into understanding students and staff ’s sentiment variation on Twitter, which could be useful for university teaching and learning management

    "This book focuses on the study of the remarkable new source of geographic information that has become available in the form of user-generated content accessible over the Internet through mobile and Web applications. The exploitation, integration and application of these sources, termed volunteered geographic information (VGI) or crowdsourced geographic information (CGI), offer scientists an unprecedented opportunity to conduct research on a variety of topics at multiple scales and for diversified objectives. The Handbook is organized in five parts, addressing the fundamental questions: What motivates citizens to provide such information in the public domain, and what factors govern/predict its validity?What methods might be used to validate such information? Can VGI be framed within the larger domain of sensor networks, in which inert and static sensors are replaced or combined by intelligent and mobile humans equipped with sensing devices? What limitations are imposed on VGI by differential access to broadband Internet, mobile phones, and other communication technologies, and by concerns over privacy? How do VGI and crowdsourcing enable innovation applications to benefit human society? Chapters examine how crowdsourcing techniques and methods, and the VGI phenomenon, have motivated a multidisciplinary research community to identify both fields of applications and quality criteria depending on the use of VGI. Besides harvesting tools and storage of these data, research has paid remarkable attention to these information resources, in an age when information and participation is one of the most important drivers of development. The collection opens questions and points to new research directions in addition to the findings that each of the authors demonstrates. Despite rapid progress in VGI research, this Handbook also shows that there are technical, social, political and methodological challenges that require further studies and research.
