    A Critical Review Of Post-Secondary Education Writing During A 21st Century Education Revolution

    Educational materials are effective instruments which provide information and report new discoveries uncovered by researchers in specific areas of academia. Higher education, like other education institutions, rely on instructional materials to inform its practice of educating adult learners. In post-secondary education, developmental English programs are tasked with meeting the needs of dynamic populations, thus there is a continuous need for research in this area to support its changing landscape. However, the majority of scholarly thought in this area centers on K-12 reading and writing. This paucity presents a phenomenon to the post-secondary community. This research study uses a qualitative content analysis to examine peer-reviewed journals from 2003-2017, developmental online websites, and a government issued document directed toward reforming post-secondary developmental education programs. These highly relevant sources aid educators in discovering informational support to apply best practices for student success. Developmental education serves the purpose of addressing literacy gaps for students transitioning to college-level work. The findings here illuminate the dearth of material offered to developmental educators. This study suggests the field of literacy research is fragmented and highlights an apparent blind spot in scholarly literature with regard to English writing instruction. This poses a quandary for post-secondary literacy researchers in the 21st century and establishes the necessity for the literacy research community to commit future scholarship toward equipping college educators teaching writing instruction to underprepared adult learners

    Explainable temporal data mining techniques to support the prediction task in Medicine

    In the last decades, the increasing amount of data available in all fields raises the necessity to discover new knowledge and explain the hidden information found. On one hand, the rapid increase of interest in, and use of, artificial intelligence (AI) in computer applications has raised a parallel concern about its ability (or lack thereof) to provide understandable, or explainable, results to users. In the biomedical informatics and computer science communities, there is considerable discussion about the `` un-explainable" nature of artificial intelligence, where often algorithms and systems leave users, and even developers, in the dark with respect to how results were obtained. Especially in the biomedical context, the necessity to explain an artificial intelligence system result is legitimate of the importance of patient safety. On the other hand, current database systems enable us to store huge quantities of data. Their analysis through data mining techniques provides the possibility to extract relevant knowledge and useful hidden information. Relationships and patterns within these data could provide new medical knowledge. The analysis of such healthcare/medical data collections could greatly help to observe the health conditions of the population and extract useful information that can be exploited in the assessment of healthcare/medical processes. Particularly, the prediction of medical events is essential for preventing disease, understanding disease mechanisms, and increasing patient quality of care. In this context, an important aspect is to verify whether the database content supports the capability of predicting future events. In this thesis, we start addressing the problem of explainability, discussing some of the most significant challenges need to be addressed with scientific and engineering rigor in a variety of biomedical domains. We analyze the ``temporal component" of explainability, focusing on detailing different perspectives such as: the use of temporal data, the temporal task, the temporal reasoning, and the dynamics of explainability in respect to the user perspective and to knowledge. Starting from this panorama, we focus our attention on two different temporal data mining techniques. The first one, based on trend abstractions, starting from the concept of Trend-Event Pattern and moving through the concept of prediction, we propose a new kind of predictive temporal patterns, namely Predictive Trend-Event Patterns (PTE-Ps). The framework aims to combine complex temporal features to extract a compact and non-redundant predictive set of patterns composed by such temporal features. The second one, based on functional dependencies, we propose a methodology for deriving a new kind of approximate temporal functional dependencies, called Approximate Predictive Functional Dependencies (APFDs), based on a three-window framework. We then discuss the concept of approximation, the data complexity of deriving an APFD, the introduction of two new error measures, and finally the quality of APFDs in terms of coverage and reliability. The contributors to this volume take a closer look at different pandemic protagonists in fictional narratives relating to the Covid-19 pandemic as well as in existing pandemic fictions.     Analysing trajectory similarity and improving graph dilation

    In this thesis, we focus on two topics in computational geometry. The first topic is analysing trajectory similarity. A trajectory tracks the movement of an object over time. A common way to analyse trajectories is by finding similarities. The Fr\'echet distance is a similarity measure that has gained popularity in the theory community, since it takes the continuity of the curves into account. One way to analyse trajectories using the Fr\'echet distance is to cluster trajectories into groups of similar trajectories. For vehicle trajectories, another way to analyse trajectories is to compute the path on the underlying road network that best represents the trajectory. The second topic is improving graph dilation. Dilation measures the quality of a network in applications such as transportation and communication networks. Spanners are low dilation graphs with not too many edges. Most of the literature on spanners focuses on building the graph from scratch. We instead focus on adding edges to improve the dilation of an existing graph

    DCP-Net: A Distributed Collaborative Perception Network for Remote Sensing Semantic Segmentation

    Onboard intelligent processing is widely applied in emergency tasks in the field of remote sensing. However, it is predominantly confined to an individual platform with a limited observation range as well as susceptibility to interference, resulting in limited accuracy. Considering the current state of multi-platform collaborative observation, this article innovatively presents a distributed collaborative perception network called DCP-Net. Firstly, the proposed DCP-Net helps members to enhance perception performance by integrating features from other platforms. Secondly, a self-mutual information match module is proposed to identify collaboration opportunities and select suitable partners, prioritizing critical collaborative features and reducing redundant transmission cost. Thirdly, a related feature fusion module is designed to address the misalignment between local and collaborative features, improving the quality of fused features for the downstream task. We conduct extensive experiments and visualization analyses using three semantic segmentation datasets, including Potsdam, iSAID and DFC23. The results demonstrate that DCP-Net outperforms the existing methods comprehensively, improving mIoU by 2.61%~16.89% at the highest collaboration efficiency, which promotes the performance to a state-of-the-art level

    Defining the Industrial Book: Material Agencies and Print Cultures in Britain, 1814–1855

    “Defining the Industrial Book” forwards an alternative history of the nineteenth-century book that emphasizes domestic and laboring print practices. Print histories tend to emphasize women and workers during the period as emergent reading audiences whose consumption of new, low-cost books propelled industrial print culture. “Defining the Industrial Book” argues, however, that these audiences maintained distinct reading and writing cultures well into the age of industrial print that they leveraged to claim autonomy within mass print culture. By bringing together interdisciplinary methods from literary criticism, book history, and media studies, “Defining the Industrial Book” examines a wide array of print artifacts — broadsides and chapbooks, scrap sheets, marginalia, waste paper, and used books — for the relationships their bear to mass-produced books. Whether the relationships are critical or imitative, each “book” reveals the ways that distinct materials of book production, such as ink, sheets, and binding, provided conduits through which communities of readers, writers, and print producers defined their relationship to mass print. Ultimately, “Defining the Industrial Book” aims to delineate more mutable notions of the book that privilege the experiences and material cultures of underrepresented print communities.Doctor of Philosoph
