Therefore, this paper proposes three power aware algorithms for offline, online, and migration applications, solving the resource allocation problem within the frameworks of network function virtualization (NFV) environments in fractions of a second. The proposed algorithms target minimizing the total costs and power consumptions in the physical network through sufficiently allocating the least physical resources to host the demands of the virtual network services, and put into saving mode all other not utilized physical components. Simulations and evaluations of the offline algorithm compared to the state-of-art resulted on lower total costs by 32%. In addition to that, the online algorithm was tested through four different experiments, and the results argued that the overall power consumption of the physical network was highly dependent on the demands’ lifetimes, and the strictness of the required end-to-end delay. Regarding migrations during online, the results concluded that the proposed algorithms would be most effective when applied for maintenance and emergency conditions.Peer ReviewedPreprin

This paper studies energy-efficient coordinated beamforming in multi-cell multi-user multigroup multicast multiple-input single-output systems. We aim at maximizing the network energy efficiency by taking into account the fact that some of the radio frequency chains can be switched off in order to save power. We consider the antenna specific maximum power constraints to avoid non-linear distortion in power amplifiers and user-specific quality of service (QoS) constraints to guarantee a certain QoS levels. We first introduce binary antenna selection variables and use the perspective formulation to model the relation between them and the beamformers. Subsequently, we propose a new formulation which reduces the feasible set of the continuous relaxation, resulting in better performance compared to the original perspective formulation based problem. However, the resulting optimization problem is a mixed-Boolean non-convex fractional program, which is difficult to solve. We follow the standard continuous relaxation of the binary antenna selection variables, and then reformulate the problem such that it is amendable to successive convex approximation. Thereby, solving the continuous relaxation mostly results in near-binary solution. To recover the binary variables from the continuous relaxation, we switch off all the antennas for which the continuous values are smaller than a small threshold. Numerical results illustrate the superior convergence result and significant achievable gains in terms of energy efficiency with the proposed algorithm.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted to IEEE ICC 2017 - International Workshop on 5G RAN Desig

Service Function Graph Design And Embedding In Next Generation Internet

Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Networking (SDN) are viewed as the techniques to design, deploy and manage future Internet services. NFV provides an effective way to decouple network functions from the proprietary hardware, allowing the network providers to implement network functions as virtual machines running on standard servers. In the NFV environment, an NFV service request is provisioned in the form of a Service Function Graph (SFG). The SFG defines the exact set of actions or Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) that the data stream from the service request is subjected to. These actions or VNFs need to be embedded onto specific physical (substrate) networks to provide network services for end users. Similarly, SDN decouples the control plane from network devices such as routers and switches. The network control management is performed via an open interface and the underlying infrastructure turned into simple programmable forwarding devices. NFV and SDN are complementary to each other. Specifically, similar to running network functions on general purpose servers, SDN control plane can be implemented as pure software running on industry standard hardware. Moreover, automation and virtualization provide both NFV and SDN the tools to achieve their respective goals. In this dissertation, we motivate the importance of service function graph design, and we focus our attention on the problem of embedding network service requests. Throughout the dissertation, we highlight the unique properties of the service requests and investigate how to efficiently design and embed an SFG for a service request onto substrate network. We address variations of the embedding service requests such as dependence awareness and branch awareness in service function graph design and embedding. We propose novel algorithms to design and embed service requests with dependence and branch awareness. We also provide the intuition behind our proposed schemes and analyze our suggested approaches over multiple metrics against other embedding techniques
