Metaverse. Old urban issues in new virtual cities

    Get PDF
Recent years have seen the arise of some early attempts to build virtual cities, utopias or affective dystopias in an embodied Internet, which in some respects appear to be the ultimate expression of the neoliberal city paradigma (even if virtual). Although there is an extensive disciplinary literature on the relationship between planning and virtual or augmented reality linked mainly to the gaming industry, this often avoids design and value issues. The observation of some of these early experiences - Decentraland, Minecraft, Liberland Metaverse, to name a few - poses important questions and problems that are gradually becoming inescapable for designers and urban planners, and allows us to make some partial considerations on the risks and potentialities of these early virtual cities

223 p.This thesis studies anomaly detection in industrial systems using technologies from the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), such as the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, 3D Printing, and Augmented Reality. The goal is to provide tools that can be used in real-world scenarios to detect system anomalies, intending to improve production and maintenance processes. The thesis investigates the applicability and implementation of 4IR technology architectures, AI-driven machine learning systems, and advanced visualization tools to support decision-making based on the detection of anomalies. The work covers a range of topics, including the conception of a 4IR system based on a generic architecture, the design of a data acquisition system for analysis and modelling, the creation of ensemble supervised and semi-supervised models for anomaly detection, the detection of anomalies through frequency analysis, and the visualization of associated data using Visual Analytics. The results show that the proposed methodology for integrating anomaly detection systems in new or existing industries is valid and that combining 4IR architectures, ensemble machine learning models, and Visual Analytics tools significantly enhances theanomaly detection processes for industrial systems. Furthermore, the thesis presents a guiding framework for data engineers and end-users

Evolution from the ground up with Amee – From basic concepts to explorative modeling

    Get PDF
Evolutionary theory has been the foundation of biological research for about a century now, yet over the past few decades, new discoveries and theoretical advances have rapidly transformed our understanding of the evolutionary process. Foremost among them are evolutionary developmental biology, epigenetic inheritance, and various forms of evolu- tionarily relevant phenotypic plasticity, as well as cultural evolution, which ultimately led to the conceptualization of an extended evolutionary synthesis. Starting from abstract principles rooted in complexity theory, this thesis aims to provide a unified conceptual understanding of any kind of evolution, biological or otherwise. This is used in the second part to develop Amee, an agent-based model that unifies development, niche construction, and phenotypic plasticity with natural selection based on a simulated ecology. Amee is implemented in Utopia, which allows performant, integrated implementation and simulation of arbitrary agent-based models. A phenomenological overview over Amee’s capabilities is provided, ranging from the evolution of ecospecies down to the evolution of metabolic networks and up to beyond-species-level biological organization, all of which emerges autonomously from the basic dynamics. The interaction of development, plasticity, and niche construction has been investigated, and it has been shown that while expected natural phenomena can, in principle, arise, the accessible simulation time and system size are too small to produce natural evo-devo phenomena and –structures. Amee thus can be used to simulate the evolution of a wide variety of processes

Digitalization is at the epicenter of the oil and gas industry's business models. It has reshaped the business landscape of global energy companies by transforming the business into a digital model with technology platforms to increase overall sales, branding, and market presence. Unfortunately, the current studies do not sufficiently investigate the role of digitalization in the oil and gas industries. There are gaps to be filled in the business model that has been infused with digitalization to improve business performance. Thus, this study aims to explore the roles of digitalization on the business model referencing Business Model Canvas and the performance of the PETROLIAM NASIONAL BERHAD (PETRONAS) from a strategic management perspective. The researcher chooses the qualitative research design by exploring a case study approach to get the study's research questions and objectives. The researcher conducted semi-structured interviews with eight (8) executive leaders of the PETRONAS group of companies representing various business streams within PETRONAS. The data were transcribed and analyzed using the themes and subthemes. The findings revealed that the business model positively influences PETRONAS’s performance. In this first theme, most participants stated that the business model enables PETRONAS to meet its targets, increase revenue, and minimize impairments. The second theme focused on the importance of the business model infused by digitalization on PETRONAS’s business performance, leading to three subthemes: efficient, competitive, and optimize, where digitalization may help PETRONAS generate new revenue streams. It also enables sustainable business by leveraging digitalization, redirecting resources to other value-added activities, and transparency. In short, most participants said that digitalization had improved PETRONAS' business performance, as reflected in their financial year 2020 and 2021 reports. PETRONAS's single unified business model was the final theme, which spawned three (3) subthemes focusing on environmental, socio-economy, and health and safety. These subthemes indicated that PETRONAS should incorporate ecological, socio-economy, and health and safety elements into its business model to ensure its sustainability. Aside from that, most participants also cited that culture, change, and digitalization act as enablers and catalysts to the business model in propelling PETRONAS's performance to greater heights where it creates an innovative and strategic workforce. The outcomes of this study contributed to various ways to theoretical ideas. Understanding and identifying the post-digitalization infusion and its roles contribute significantly to the formulation of a single unified business model for PETRONAS’ performance by highlighting the critical elements that PETRONAS must consider and the business model building blocks. On the other side, this research had practical ramifications since the conceptual framework produced according to the results was used to propose a single unified business model for improved business performance

    Ecosystem synergies, change and orchestration

This thesis investigates ecosystem synergies, change, and orchestration. The research topics are motivated by my curiosity, a fragmented research landscape, theoretical gaps, and new phenomena that challenge extant theories. To address these motivators, I conduct literature reviews to organise existing studies and identify their limited assumptions in light of new phenomena. Empirically, I adopt a case study method with abductive reasoning for a longitudinal analysis of the Alibaba ecosystem from 1999 to 2020. My findings provide an integrated and updated conceptualisation of ecosystem synergies that comprises three distinctive but interrelated components: 1) stack and integrate generic resources for efficiency and optimisation, 2) empower generative changes for variety and evolvability, and 3) govern tensions for sustainable growth. Theoretically grounded and empirically refined, this new conceptualisation helps us better understand the unique synergies of ecosystems that differ from those of alternative collective organisations and explain the forces that drive voluntary participation for value co-creation. Regarding ecosystem change, I find a duality relationship between intentionality and emergence and develop a phasic model of ecosystem sustainable growth with internal and external drivers. This new understanding challenges and extends prior discussions on their dominant dualism view, focus on partial drivers, and taken-for-granted lifecycle model. I propose that ecosystem orchestration involves systematic coordination of technological, adoption, internal, and institutional activities and is driven by long-term visions and adjusted by re-visioning. My analysis reveals internal orchestration's important role (re-envisioning, piloting, and organisation architectural reconfiguring), the synergy and system principles in designing adoption activities, and the expanding arena of institutional activities. Finally, building on the above findings, I reconceptualise ecosystems and ecosystem sustainable growth to highlight multi-stakeholder value creation, inclusivity, long-term orientation and interpretative approach. The thesis ends with discussing the implications for practice, policy, and future research.Open Acces

Future Perspectives on Positive Psychology:A Research Agenda

    Get PDF
Just over two decades ago, Martin Seligman's inaugural lecture as the new president of the APA marked the dawn of Positive Psychology. Seligman called for a science of positive subjective experiences, positive individual states/traits/behaviours, and positive societal factors that improves the quality of life and wellbeing. Since then, this sub-discipline of psychology has shown extraordinary and inspiring growth in both the academy (e.g. research papers/books) and practice (e.g. establishment of professional associations, annual conferences). Positive psychology has increased our collective understanding of the factors that make life worth living, the drivers that enhance wellbeing and the elements that undermine them. It has given birth to many new theories, research models and methodologies that aim to measure, interpret, model and optimize the conditions that lead to flourishing individuals and thriving societies. It has also spawned a magnitude of sub-disciplines ranging from positive ageing, positive coaching, wellbeing therapies, positive relationships, positive health, positive organizational psychology etc. Despite building out its own identity, positive psychology has also been adopted in many adjacent fields like organizational studies, education, health, risk management, and even architectural sciences. In its relatively short life, positive psychology has provided new insights into the human condition and innovative means to solve complex individual, organizational and societal problems. Positive psychology has brought balance to psychology by establishing a platform to focus on more than just "fixing what is wrong" through focusing on optimizing what already works well. As a collective, we believe that positive psychology can continue to play a vital role in the future by deepening our understanding of 'positivity' and developing practical tools, methodologies, and interventions to enhance people, organizations, and societies' functioning. But what does the future of positive psychology hold? What are the strengths, opportunities, aspirations and results of positive psychology? And how can we, as a collective, build out the credibility and impact of the discipline's future? For us, these are some of the most challenging goals of positive psychology. With the rapid development of the field, detailed research and practice 'roadmaps' are required to direct the discipline's collective energies. This book address such by collating a series of research agendas about the future of positive psychology in different speciality areas. Specifically, the aim was to identify the limitations in our current understanding of the different theories, models, methods and interventions on which positive psychology is built and propose a roadmap for addressing such in the future. This aided in setting a specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-bound research agenda to direct the future development of positive psychology. Contributions discuss the current state of theory and research in positive psychology and presents a research agenda for future research
