Quality-Aware Broadcasting Strategies for Position Estimation in VANETs
The dissemination of vehicle position data all over the network is a
fundamental task in Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) operations, as
applications often need to know the position of other vehicles over a large
area. In such cases, inter-vehicular communications should be exploited to
satisfy application requirements, although congestion control mechanisms are
required to minimize the packet collision probability. In this work, we face
the issue of achieving accurate vehicle position estimation and prediction in a
VANET scenario. State of the art solutions to the problem try to broadcast the
positioning information periodically, so that vehicles can ensure that the
information their neighbors have about them is never older than the
inter-transmission period. However, the rate of decay of the information is not
deterministic in complex urban scenarios: the movements and maneuvers of
vehicles can often be erratic and unpredictable, making old positioning
information inaccurate or downright misleading. To address this problem, we
propose to use the Quality of Information (QoI) as the decision factor for
broadcasting. We implement a threshold-based strategy to distribute position
information whenever the positioning error passes a reference value, thereby
shifting the objective of the network to limiting the actual positioning error
and guaranteeing quality across the VANET. The threshold-based strategy can
reduce the network load by avoiding the transmission of redundant messages, as
well as improving the overall positioning accuracy by more than 20% in

Distributed Road Traffic Congestion Quantification Using Cooperative VANETs
The well-known traffic congestion problem in urban environments has negative impact on many areas including economy, environment, health and lifestyle. Recently, a number of solutions based on vehicle-to-vehicle communications were proposed for traffic congestion detection and management. In this paper we present an algorithm designed to enable each vehicle in the network to detect and quantify the level of traffic congestion in completely distributed way, independent of any supporting infrastructure and additional information such as traffic data from local authorities. Based on observations of traffic congestion by every vehicle, and by adapting the broadcast interval, it enables dissemination of the traffic information to other vehicles. The algorithm also makes every vehicle aware about the congestion level on the streets that are spatially separated from their current location by several streets. Its robustness keeps the vehicle's overall knowledge about congestion consistent, despite the short-term changes in vehicle's motion. Since the quantification of congestion is based on per-vehicle basis, the algorithm is able to operate even when only 10% of vehicles in the network are VANET enabled. Data aggregation and adaptive broadcasting are used to ensure that vehicles do not send redundant information about the traffic congestion. Managed information gathering and fusion for transient transport problems
This paper deals with vehicular traffic management by communication technologies from Traffic Control Center point of view in road networks. The global goal is to manage the urban traffic by road traffic operations, controlling and interventional possibilities in order to minimize the traffic delays and stops and to improve traffic safety on the roads. This paper focuses on transient transport, when the controlling management is crucial. The aim was to detect the beginning time of the transient traffic on the roads, to gather the most appropriate data and to get reliable information for interventional suggestions. More reliable information can be created by information fusion, several fusion techniques are expounded in this paper. A half-automatic solution with Decision Support System has been developed to help with engineers in suggestions of interventions based on real time traffic data. The information fusion has benefits for Decision Support System: the complementary sensors may fill the gaps of one another, the system is able to detect the changing of the percentage of different vehicle types in traffic. An example of detection and interventional suggestion about transient traffic on transport networks of a little town is presented at the end of the paper. DxNAT - Deep Neural Networks for Explaining Non-Recurring Traffic Congestion
Non-recurring traffic congestion is caused by temporary disruptions, such as
accidents, sports games, adverse weather, etc. We use data related to real-time
traffic speed, jam factors (a traffic congestion indicator), and events
collected over a year from Nashville, TN to train a multi-layered deep neural
network. The traffic dataset contains over 900 million data records. The
network is thereafter used to classify the real-time data and identify
anomalous operations. Compared with traditional approaches of using statistical
or machine learning techniques, our model reaches an accuracy of 98.73 percent
when identifying traffic congestion caused by football games. Our approach
first encodes the traffic across a region as a scaled image. After that the
image data from different timestamps is fused with event- and time-related
data. Then a crossover operator is used as a data augmentation method to
generate training datasets with more balanced classes. Finally, we use the
receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis to tune the sensitivity of the
classifier. We present the analysis of the training time and the inference time

MobileTrust: Secure Knowledge Integration in VANETs
Vehicular Ad hoc NETworks (VANET) are becoming popular due to the emergence of the Internet of Things and ambient intelligence applications. In such networks, secure resource sharing functionality is accomplished by incorporating trust schemes. Current solutions adopt peer-to-peer technologies that can cover the large operational area. However, these systems fail to capture some inherent properties of VANETs, such as fast and ephemeral interaction, making robust trust evaluation of crowdsourcing challenging. In this article, we propose MobileTrust—a hybrid trust-based system for secure resource sharing in VANETs. The proposal is a breakthrough in centralized trust computing that utilizes cloud and upcoming 5G technologies to provide robust trust establishment with global scalability. The ad hoc communication is energy-efficient and protects the system against threats that are not countered by the current settings. To evaluate its performance and effectiveness, MobileTrust is modelled in the SUMO simulator and tested on the traffic features of the small-size German city of Eichstatt. Similar schemes are implemented in the same platform to provide a fair comparison. Moreover, MobileTrust is deployed on a typical embedded system platform and applied on a real smart car installation for monitoring traffic and road-state parameters of an urban application. The proposed system is developed under the EU-founded THREAT-ARREST project, to provide security, privacy, and trust in an intelligent and energy-aware transportation scenario, bringing closer the vision of sustainable circular economy
Secure Message Dissemination with QoS Guaranteed Routing in Internet of Vehicles
Internet of Vehicles (IoV) is a variant of vehicular adhoc network (VANET) where vehicles can communicate with other vehicles, infrastructure devices, parking lots and even pedestrians. Communication to other entities is facilitates through various services like DSRC, C2C-CC. Fake messages can be propagated by attackers for various selfish needs. Complex authentication procedures can affect the propagation of emergency messages. Thus a light weight mechanism to ensure the trust of messages without affecting the delivery deadlines for emergency messages. Addressing this problem, this work proposes a clustering based network topology for IoV where routing is optimized for message dissemination of various classes using hybrid meta-heuristics. In addition, two stage message authentication technique combining collaborative authentication with Bayesian filtering is proposed to verify the authenticity of message. Through simulation analysis, the proposed solution is found to detect fake messages with an accuracy of 96% with 10% lower processing delay compared to existing works
