    MICA: A MID Compiler in Java

    Management Information Bases (MIBs) define the attributes of objects managed by the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). An SNMP application uses the information in one or more MIBs to learn the attributes of the objects supported by the managed devices in a network. MIBs in source form are not directly usable; they must first be compiled into a format acceptable to the SNMP application. Java's built-in network facilities make it an ideal language for writing SNMP applications, so the need arises for a Java-based MIB compiler. The MICA project is the design and implementation a Java class library that treats a MIB as an abstract data type (ADT).     Network monitoring is a crucial IT process, which consists of monitoring network devices such as routers, switches, firewalls and servers for performance and fault issues. A good functioning network if vital for an organization, but unfortunately, network outages and performance issues are a part of every organization’s network. Faults, being hardware or human originated, may appear at any time and can give rise to sometimes critical situations. For this reason, network devices should be monitored continuously in a proactive way to prevent these network failures and downtimes. Identifying traffic bottlenecks, faulty components, low performance and other types of issues in an early stage minimizes or even eliminates bigger problems that can occur later on. Efficient proactive monitoring can help prevent network outage and should be implemented by every network administrator. Adopting a secure, low bandwidth consumption and compatible protocol is a good practice when implementing a monitoring solution. One such protocol is the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and provides a message format for communication between the SNMP managers and agents; it is also supported by most of the present day network devices and servers. The main goal of research described in this dissertation is the study of the various existing freeware SNMP monitoring platforms in the market today and the implementation of the one best suited for the university’s network. The solution would have to be compatible with the university’s multivendor device network and be scalable enough to permit future growth. It should also have a good alerting system to provide a pro-active approach to resolving issues. Implementation, evaluation and conclusions of the best suited monitoring solution are presented during the course of this study

    The development of a discovery and control environment for networked audio devices based on a study of current audio control protocols

    This dissertation develops a standard device model for networked audio devices and introduces a novel discovery and control environment that uses the developed device model. The proposed standard device model is derived from a study of current audio control protocols. Both the functional capabilities and design principles of audio control protocols are investigated with an emphasis on Open Sound Control, SNMP and IEC-62379, AES64, CopperLan and UPnP. An abstract model of networked audio devices is developed, and the model is implemented in each of the previously mentioned control protocols. This model is also used within a novel discovery and control environment designed around a distributed associative memory termed an object space. This environment challenges the accepted notions of the functionality provided by a control protocol. The study concludes by comparing the salient features of the different control protocols encountered in this study. Different approaches to control protocol design are considered, and several design heuristics for control protocols are proposed

    An intelligent alternative approach to the efficient network management

    Due to the increasing complexity and heterogeneity of networks and services, many efforts have been made to develop intelligent techniques for management. Network intelligent management is a key technology for operating large heterogeneous data transmission networks. This paper presents a proposal for an architecture that integrates management object specifications and the knowledge of expert systems. We present a new approach named Integrated Expert Management, for learning objects based on expert management rules and describe the design and implementation of an integrated intelligent management platform based on OSI and Internet management models. The main contributions of our approach is the integration of both expert system and managed models, so we can make use of them to construct more flexible intelligent management network. The prototype SONAP (Software for Network Assistant and Performance) is accuracy-aware since it can control and manage a network. We have tested our system on real data to the fault diagnostic in a telecommunication system of a power utility. The results validate the model and show a significant improvement with respect to the number of rules and the error rate in others systems
