Neuromorphic analogue VLSI
Neuromorphic systems emulate the organization and function of nervous systems. They are usually composed of analogue electronic circuits that are fabricated in the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) medium using very large-scale integration (VLSI) technology. However, these neuromorphic systems are not another kind of digital computer in which abstract neural networks are simulated symbolically in terms of their mathematical behavior. Instead, they directly embody, in the physics of their CMOS circuits, analogues of the physical processes that underlie the computations of neural systems. The significance of neuromorphic systems is that they offer a method of exploring neural computation in a medium whose physical behavior is analogous to that of biological nervous systems and that operates in real time irrespective of size. The implications of this approach are both scientific and practical. The study of neuromorphic systems provides a bridge between levels of understanding. For example, it provides a link between the physical processes of neurons and their computational significance. In addition, the synthesis of neuromorphic systems transposes our knowledge of neuroscience into practical devices that can interact directly with the real world in the same way that biological nervous systems do
A recurrent model of orientation maps with simple and complex cells
We describe a neuromorphic chip that utilizes transistor heterogeneity, introduced by the fabrication process, to generate orientation maps similar to those imaged in vivo. Our model consists of a recurrent network of excitatory and inhibitory cells in parallel with a push-pull stage. Similar to a previous model the recurrent network displays hotspots of activity that give rise to visual feature maps. Unlike previous work, however, the map for orientation does not depend on the sign of contrast. Instead, sign-independent cells driven by both ON and OFF channels anchor the map, while push-pull interactions give rise to sign-preserving cells. These two groups of orientation-selective cells are similar to complex and simple cells observed in V1
Spike Processing on an Embedded Multi-task Computer: Image Reconstruction
There is an emerging philosophy, called Neuro-informatics, contained
in the Artificial Intelligence field, that aims to emulate how living beings do tasks
such as taking a decision based on the interpretation of an image by emulating spiking
neurons into VLSI designs and, therefore, trying to re-create the human brain at
its highest level. Address-Event-Representation (AER) is a communication protocol
that has embedded part of the processing. It is intended to transfer spikes between
bioinspired chips. An AER based system may consist of a hierarchical structure with
several chips that transmit spikes among them in real-time, while performing some
processing. There are several AER tools to help to develop and test AER based systems.
These tools require the use of a computer to allow the higher level processing of
the event information, reaching very high bandwidth at the AER communication level.
We propose the use of an embedded platform based on a multi-task operating system
to allow both, the AER communication and processing without the requirement of either
a laptop or a computer. In this paper, we present and study the performance of a
new philosophy of a frame-grabber AER tool based on a multi-task environment. This
embedded platform is based on the Intel XScale processor which is governed by an
embedded GNU/Linux system. We have connected and programmed it for processing

A spatial contrast retina with on-chip calibration for neuromorphic spike-based AER vision systems
We present a 32 32 pixels contrast retina microchip that provides its output as an address event representation (AER) stream. Spatial contrast is computed as the ratio between pixel photocurrent and a local average between neighboring pixels obtained with a diffuser network. This current-based computation produces an important amount of mismatch between neighboring pixels, because the currents can be as low as a few pico-amperes. Consequently, a compact calibration circuitry has been included to trimm each pixel. Measurements show a reduction in mismatch standard deviation from 57% to 6.6% (indoor light). The paper describes the design of the pixel with its spatial contrast computation and calibration sections. About one third of pixel area is used for a 5-bit calibration circuit. Area of pixel is 58 m 56 m, while its current consumption is about 20 nA at 1-kHz event rate. Memory and information processing in neuromorphic systems
A striking difference between brain-inspired neuromorphic processors and
current von Neumann processors architectures is the way in which memory and
processing is organized. As Information and Communication Technologies continue
to address the need for increased computational power through the increase of
cores within a digital processor, neuromorphic engineers and scientists can
complement this need by building processor architectures where memory is
distributed with the processing. In this paper we present a survey of
brain-inspired processor architectures that support models of cortical networks
and deep neural networks. These architectures range from serial clocked
implementations of multi-neuron systems to massively parallel asynchronous ones
and from purely digital systems to mixed analog/digital systems which implement
more biological-like models of neurons and synapses together with a suite of
adaptation and learning mechanisms analogous to the ones found in biological
nervous systems. We describe the advantages of the different approaches being
pursued and present the challenges that need to be addressed for building
artificial neural processing systems that can display the richness of behaviors

Event-based Vision: A Survey
Event cameras are bio-inspired sensors that differ from conventional frame
cameras: Instead of capturing images at a fixed rate, they asynchronously
measure per-pixel brightness changes, and output a stream of events that encode
the time, location and sign of the brightness changes. Event cameras offer
attractive properties compared to traditional cameras: high temporal resolution
(in the order of microseconds), very high dynamic range (140 dB vs. 60 dB), low
power consumption, and high pixel bandwidth (on the order of kHz) resulting in
reduced motion blur. Hence, event cameras have a large potential for robotics
and computer vision in challenging scenarios for traditional cameras, such as
low-latency, high speed, and high dynamic range. However, novel methods are
required to process the unconventional output of these sensors in order to
unlock their potential. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the
emerging field of event-based vision, with a focus on the applications and the
algorithms developed to unlock the outstanding properties of event cameras. We
present event cameras from their working principle, the actual sensors that are
available and the tasks that they have been used for, from low-level vision
(feature detection and tracking, optic flow, etc.) to high-level vision
(reconstruction, segmentation, recognition). We also discuss the techniques
developed to process events, including learning-based techniques, as well as
specialized processors for these novel sensors, such as spiking neural
networks. Additionally, we highlight the challenges that remain to be tackled
and the opportunities that lie ahead in the search for a more efficient,
bio-inspired way for machines to perceive and interact with the world
Optic Nerve Signals in a Neuromorphic Chip I: Outer and Inner Retina Models
We present a novel model for the mammalian retina and analyze its behavior. Our outer retina model performs bandpass spatiotemporal filtering. It is comprised of two reciprocally connected resistive grids that model the cone and horizontal cell syncytia. We show analytically that its sensitivity is proportional to the space-constant-ratio of the two grids while its half-max response is set by the local average intensity. Thus, this outer retina model realizes luminance adaptation. Our inner retina model performs high-pass temporal filtering. It features slow negative feedback whose strength is modulated by a locally computed measure of temporal contrast, modeling two kinds of amacrine cells, one narrow-field, the other wide-field.We show analytically that, when the input is spectrally pure, the corner-frequency tracks the input frequency. But when the input is broadband, the corner frequency is proportional to contrast. Thus, this inner retina model realizes temporal frequency adaptation as well as contrast gain control.We present CMOS circuit designs for our retina model in this paper as well. Experimental measurements from the fabricated chip, and validation of our analytical results, are presented in the companion paper [Zaghloul and Boahen (2004)]

Hardware-Amenable Structural Learning for Spike-based Pattern Classification using a Simple Model of Active Dendrites
This paper presents a spike-based model which employs neurons with
functionally distinct dendritic compartments for classifying high dimensional
binary patterns. The synaptic inputs arriving on each dendritic subunit are
nonlinearly processed before being linearly integrated at the soma, giving the
neuron a capacity to perform a large number of input-output mappings. The model
utilizes sparse synaptic connectivity; where each synapse takes a binary value.
The optimal connection pattern of a neuron is learned by using a simple
hardware-friendly, margin enhancing learning algorithm inspired by the
mechanism of structural plasticity in biological neurons. The learning
algorithm groups correlated synaptic inputs on the same dendritic branch. Since
the learning results in modified connection patterns, it can be incorporated
into current event-based neuromorphic systems with little overhead. This work
also presents a branch-specific spike-based version of this structural
plasticity rule. The proposed model is evaluated on benchmark binary
classification problems and its performance is compared against that achieved
using Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Extreme Learning Machine (ELM)
techniques. Our proposed method attains comparable performance while utilizing
10 to 50% less computational resources than the other reported techniques.Comment: Accepted for publication in Neural Computatio
