EvliyĆ¢ Ƈelebi, an Ottoman writer, scholar and world traveler, visited most of the territories and also some of the neighboring countries of the Ottoman Empire in the seventeenth century. He took notes about his trips and wrote a 10-volume book called SeyahatnĆ¢me (Book of Travels). In this paper, we present two methods for constructing social networks by using textual data and apply it to SeyahatnĆ¢me-Bitlis Section from book IV. The first social network construction method is based on proximity of co-occurence of names. The second method is based on 2-pair associations obtained by association rule mining by using sliding text blocks as transactions. The social networks obtained by these two methods are validated using a Monte Carlo approach by comparing them with the social network created by a scholar-historian. Family, companions, and death: Seyyid Hasan Nuri Efendi's microcosm (1661-1665)

This thesis is an exercise on Seyyid Hasan NĆ»rĆ® Efendiā€™s diary, the sĆ¢lnĆ¢mes kept between 1661- 1665 and recognized as the SohbetnĆ¢me in the secondary literature. Under the influence of recent German/Swiss scholarship on the study of self-narratives, especially the studies of such scholars as Kaspar von Greyerz and Gabriele Jancke, this thesis maintains that early modern diaries differ from the diaries written in the modern era in terms of their reflection on the individual characters of their authors, arguing that they are testimonies of culture and ethos of the social groups in which they were produced. Inserting this argument into an empirical study of Hasan Efendiā€™s diary, the first chapter attempts to make a technical and contextual analysis of the document, following a biography of Hasan Efendi. Based on the idea that early modern diaries can provide insight into prosopographical studies, the second chapter investigates the social relationships of the author Hasan Efendi in three expanding realms: (1) His family, (2) his everyday encounters such as his companions and people from his lodge, (3) his high-ranking acquaintances and people from rarely encountered lines. Finally, the third chapter deals with the theme of death, which is frequently encountered in the diary as part of Hasan Efendiā€™s social world. Investigating the theme from social, folkloric, and historical anthropological perspectives, this chapter seeks to understand the responses to death in the sĆ¢lnĆ¢mes around the concepts of bereavement, ritual, and rivalry

Few professions are so closely associated with a specific individual. Few individuals are so attached to their vocations that it is impossible to observe them separately. In Croatia the word turkologist has become almost synonymous with Professor Ekrem ČauÅ”ević, a scholar known world-wide, who established the first university program in Turkish studies in the countryā€”hence the title for the collection of essays dedicated to the Professor on the occasion of his 70th birthday. This volume contains twenty-five papers, mostly from the realm of Turkish studies, authored by the Professorā€™s colleagues, friends and associates. There are many links in it to the honoreeā€”dedications, acknowledgments, and references to his worksā€”eloquent reminders of the influence of his research accomplishments and longstanding successful collaboration with scholars in Turkish studies, Croatian studies, historians and linguists. Contributions authored by junior colleagues in Turkish studies are proof of the Professorā€™s determination to encourage the most competent students to engage in research. The diverse topics in this volume reflect the extensive research interests of Ekrem ČauÅ”ević. The first part, ā€œPhilologyā€, is focused on the area ČauÅ”ević contributed to the most. The second part, ā€œHistoryā€, contains contributions that do not belong to the research interests of Ekrem ČauÅ”ević in the narrower sense. However, historiography still presents a relevant and valuable framework for his linguistic works which include a diachronic perspective as well.
