    Feedback on the integration of a serious game in the data modeling learning

    Data Modeling (DM) is an important area in the Information System (IS) learning. In particular, in the IS analysis phase business analysts need to provide a comprehensive notation to avoid misunderstanding between software engineers and customer. Teaching DM is a challenging task, mainly because it lays great emphasis on theory. It remains often abstract, not consensual and complex to implement in real setting. In order to better motivate learners, this paper aims to assess the integration of Serious Games (SGs) in the DM learning. Previous researches on learning with SGs has mainly been focused on other areas of the IS domain, such as Business Process Management (BPM). In an attempt to fill this gap, this paper presents an exploratory experiment on the usage of the SG innov8, carried out within a business school’s master students. This SG initially designed for learning BPM, has been the subject of a gamification experiment in order to design a data model. The feedback from the students and teachers were quite positive

    El objetivo del presente trabajo es valorar la efectividad de un videojuego de contabilidad en relación a sus atributos, motivación y resultados de aprendizaje. Los resultados muestran que, en relación a los atributos, la mayoría fueron evaluados favorablemente,destacando los relacionados con diversión, adicción y la provisión de información clara sobre los objetivos mientras que los menos valorados fueron los relacionados con la retroalimentación. En cuanto a la motivación, los resultados muestran que los estudiantes perciben la actividad como motivadora, sobre todo en cuanto a disfrute con el juego y sensación de éxito. Y, en cuanto a los objetivos de aprendizaje, los resultados dan sus valores más altos demostrando que los participantes perciben que aprenden y que consiguen sus objetivos

    The Play Your Process Method for Business Process-Based Digital Game Design

    Serious games have been understood as a useful tool to engage, educate and train individuals in many areas. They are also suitable for the business processes management area where it is expected that business-process-based digital games can bring together players (process actors) to better understand and learn organizational business processes. This paper presents a game design method for the development of serious games which aims to provide business process understanding to players, as well as to allow them to reflect on process challenges and difficulties. The design of serious business process games requires game designers to have business process modeling skills and instructions on how to represent business process elements in the game context. This research was conducted using the Design Science Research Methodology, and addresses the challenge of providing a method for the design of serious business process games. The method receives business process models as input and comprises steps to (i) map business process elements into game design elements, game design and development, and (ii) evaluate games with game designers, process actors, and game players. In order to validate the method, a set of games was built and evaluated with players.     A Phenomenological Study of Digital Business Simulation Games and Implementation for Corporate Learning

    This qualitative phenomenological study investigated the experiences of a purposive sample of eight Learning and Development executives to understand the circumstances leading to, as well as the experiences implementing Digital Business Simulation Games (DBSG) in a corporate learning environment, specifically related to the financial service industry. Their perception of the organizational needs, decision-making process of those involved, as well as the experience in design, development, and implementation may contribute to a better understanding of the circumstances within an organization where a DBSG would be an effective solution to achieve the development goals of learners within that organization. This study will also investigate the impact the implementation of the DBSG had on the organization, as well as provide further insight into best practices and critical success factors for future implementations. The research technique employed was a modified van Kaam method as described by Moustakas (1994) based upon transcribed interviews using semi-structured questions to capture the organizational needs, decision-making, and implementation experiences as well as perceptions of the participants. Five significant themes with two subthemes that emerged are prevalent from within the collected data from the participants: 1) needs intake and leadership support, 2) safe space to practice, 3) innovation on current curricula, 4) higher degrees of engagement, and 5) positive measurement results. The resulting analysis also led to considerable collection of best practices and critical success factors in deciding to undertake a DBSG program, and the design, development and implementation of a DBS

    The design and implementation of serious games for driving and mobility

    The automotive and transportation sectors are showing consistent improvements in trends and standards concerning the safe and convenient travel of the road users. In this growing community of road users, the driver performance is a notable factor as many on-road mishaps emerge out of poor driver performance. In this research work, a case-study and experimental analysis were conducted to improve driver performance through the deployment of serious games. The primary motive of this work is to stimulate the on-road user performance through immediate feedback, driver coaching, and real-time gamification methods. The games exploit the cloud-based architecture to retrieve the driver performance scores based on real-time evaluation of vehicle signals and display the outcomes on game scene by reflecting the game parameters based on real-world user performance (in the context of driving and mobility). The deployment of games in cars is the topic of interest in current state-of-the-art, as there are more factors associated with it, such as safety, usability, and willingness of the users. These aspects were taken into careful consideration while designing the paradigm of gamification model. The user feedback for the real-time games was extracted through pilot tests and field tests in Genova. The gamification and driver coaching aspects were tested on various occasions (plug-in and field tests conducted at 5 European test sites), and the inputs from these field tests enabled to tune the parameters concerning the evaluation and gamification models. The improvement of user behavior was performed through a virtuous cycle with the integration of virtual sensors to the serious gaming framework. As the culmination, the usability tests for the real-time games were conducted with 18 test users to understand the user acceptance criteria and the parameters (ease of use and safety) that would contribute to the deployment of games. Other salient factors such as the impact of games, large-scale deployment, collaborative gaming and exploitation of gaming framework for 3rd party applications were also investigated in this research activity. The analysis of the usability tests states that the user acceptance of the implemented games is good. The report from usability study has addressed the user preferences in games such as duration, strategy and gameplay mechanism; these factors contribute a foundation for future research in implementing the games for mobility

    USING SERIOUS GAMES DESIGNED THROUGH THE GAME ELC+ FRAMEWORK TO ENHANCE DEEP LEARNING IN HUMAN RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT

    The traditional method of learning has been widely criticised for its limitations and inflexibility to application in non-educational settings. These observations about the traditional modes of learning have necessitated the contemplation and discovery of new approaches embracing technological tools that advances better learning experiences. Hence, new technological innovations, such as Stronger Game or Serious Games (SGs) have been embraced as more effective methods of achieving deep learning. The application of serious game has indeed, gained traction in both the formal educational and human resource (HR) settings, especially for employees’ training and development. Thus, the core question of this PhD research is hinged on whether the SGs are more effective in creating deep learning in adult learners, compared to the more traditional teaching methods. To respond to this query, the study examines the traditional and SGs learning approaches, in order to ascertain which is more effective in creating deep learning in adults, in addition to achieving human resource training and development. To guide the design and development of SGs to support adult DL, this research proposes a pedagogical framework referred to as the Game ELC+ framework that comprises four learning theories namely: The Game (Elements) within the Yu Kai Chou's Octalysis Framework; Bloom Taxonomy’s Player (Learning) Levels; (Cognitive) Theory of Multimedia Learning; and the Ruskov’s four evidence of Deep Learning (+). This framework provides the standard for measuring DL in the design of SGs. The research instruments developed include a traditional andragogical test which uses e-Learning materials containing ten different learning scenarios in the context of workplace HR scenarios, and a digital Serious Game using exactly the same content and scenarios with the traditional andragogical test. ANOVA was utilized as the data analytical approach for comparing the mean score of learners using serious games and the tradition eLearning platforms. The study hypothesised that deep learning can be achieved through the SGs and that it is more effective than the traditional andragogy. It further asserts that participants who used the SGs achieved a higher learning outcome than participants in traditional process. Participant observation during the testing phase suggests that the participants interacting with the SGs demonstrated high level of engagement and curiosity, when compared to participants who used the traditional eLearning platform. The study findings validate the hypotheses. By implication, the SGs designed according to the Game ELC+ framework results in improved learning outcomes. In summary, the findings claim that incorporating SG elements in HR training and development can improve professional practices and mitigate some of the challenges experienced by human resource in the traditional learning environment

    e-Business challenges and directions: important themes from the first ICE-B workshop

    A three-day asynchronous, interactive workshop was held at ICE-B’10 in Piraeus, Greece in July of 2010. This event captured conference themes for e-Business challenges and directions across four subject areas: a) e-Business applications and models, b) enterprise engineering, c) mobility, d) business collaboration and e-Services, and e) technology platforms. Quality Function Deployment (QFD) methods were used to gather, organize and evaluate themes and their ratings. This paper summarizes the most important themes rated by participants: a) Since technology is becoming more economic and social in nature, more agile and context-based application develop methods are needed. b) Enterprise engineering approaches are needed to support the design of systems that can evolve with changing stakeholder needs. c) The digital native groundswell requires changes to business models, operations, and systems to support Prosumers. d) Intelligence and interoperability are needed to address Prosumer activity and their highly customized product purchases. e) Technology platforms must rapidly and correctly adapt, provide widespread offerings and scale appropriately, in the context of changing situational contexts
