Aerated blast furnace slag filters for enhanced nitrogen and phosphorus removal from small wastewater treatment plants
Rock filters (RF) are a promising alternative technology for natural
wastewater treatment for upgrading WSP effluent. However, the application
of RF in the removal of eutrophic nutrients, nitrogen and phosphorus, is very
limited. Accordingly, the overall objective of this study was to develop a lowcost
RF system for the purpose of enhanced nutrient removal from WSP
effluents, which would be able to produce effluents which comply with the
requirements of the EU Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (UWWTD)
(911271lEEC) and suitable for small communities. Therefore, a combination
system comprising a primary facultative pond and an aerated rock filter
(ARF) system-either vertically or horizontally loaded-was investigated at
the University of Leeds' experimental station at Esholt Wastewater
Treatment Works, Bradford, UK.
Blast furnace slag (BFS) and limestone were selected for use in the ARF
system owing to their high potential for P removal and their low cost. This
study involved three major qperiments: (1) a comparison of aerated
vertical-flow and horizontal-flow limestone filters for nitrogen removal; (2) a
comparison of aerated limestone + blast furnace slag (BFS) filter and
aerated BFS filters for nitrogen and phosphorus removal; and (3) a
comparison of vertical-flow and horizontal-flow BFS filters for nitrogen and
phosphorus removal.
The vertical upward-flow ARF system was found to be superior to the
horizontal-flow ARF system in terms of nitrogen removal, mostly thiough
bacterial nitrification processes in both the aerated limestone and BFS filter
studies. The BFS filter medium (whieh is low-cost) showed a much higher
potential in removing phosphortls from pond effluent than the limestone
medium. As a result, the combination of a vertical upward-flow ARF system
and an economical and effective P-removal filter medium, such as BFS,
was found to be an ideal optionfor the total nutrient removal of both nitrogen
and phosphorus from wastewater.
In parallel with these experiments, studies on the aerated BFS filter effective
life and major in-filter phosphorus removal pathways were carried out. From
the standard batch experiments of Pmax adsorption capacity of BFS, as well
as six-month data collection of daily average P-removal, it was found that
the effective life of the aerated BFS filter was 6.5 years. Scanning electron
microscopy and X-ray diffraction spectrometric analyses on the surface of
BFS, particulates and sediment samples revealed that the apparent
mechanisms of P-removal in the filter are adsorption on the amorphous
oxide phase of the BFS surface and precipitation within the filter

From SpaceStat to CyberGIS: Twenty Years of Spatial Data Analysis Software
This essay assesses the evolution of the way in which spatial data analytical methods have been incorporated into software tools over the past two decades. It is part retrospective and prospective, going beyond a historical review to outline some ideas about important factors that drove the software development, such as methodological advances, the open source movement and the advent of the internet and cyberinfrastructure. The review highlights activities carried out by the author and his collaborators and uses SpaceStat, GeoDa, PySAL and recent spatial analytical web services developed at the ASU GeoDa Center as illustrative examples. It outlines a vision for a spatial econometrics workbench as an example of the incorporation of spatial analytical functionality in a cyberGIS.
Visualization, Exploration and Data Analysis of Complex Astrophysical Data
In this paper we show how advanced visualization tools can help the
researcher in investigating and extracting information from data. The focus is
on VisIVO, a novel open source graphics application, which blends high
performance multidimensional visualization techniques and up-to-date
technologies to cooperate with other applications and to access remote,
distributed data archives. VisIVO supports the standards defined by the
International Virtual Observatory Alliance in order to make it interoperable
with VO data repositories. The paper describes the basic technical details and
features of the software and it dedicates a large section to show how VisIVO

Fluid-structure interaction on the combustion instability
The multi-domain problem, the limit cycle behaviour of unstable oscillations in the LIMOUSINE model combustor has been investigated by numerical and experimental studies. A strong interaction between the aerodynamics-combustion-acoustic oscillations has been observed during the operation. In this regime, the unsteady heat release by the flame is the acoustic source inducing pressure waves and subsequently the acoustic field acts as a pressure load on the structure. The vibration of the liner walls generates a displacement of the flue gas near the wall inside the combustor which generates an acoustic field proportional to the liner wall acceleration. The two-way interaction between the oscillating pressure load in the fluid and the motion of the structure under the limit cycle oscillation can bring up elevated vibration levels, which accelerates the degradation of liner material at high temperatures. Therefore, fatigue and/or creep lead the failure mechanism. In this paper the time dependent pressures on the liner and corresponding structural velocity amplitudes are calculated by using ANSYS workbench V13.1 software, in which pressure and displacement values have been exchanged between CFD and structural domains transiently creating two-way fluid-structure coupling. The flow of information is sustained between the fluid dynamics and structural dynamics. A validation check has been performed between the numerical pressure and liner velocity results and experimental results. The excitation frequency of the structure in the combustor has been assessed by numerical, analytical and experimental modal analysis in order to distinct the acoustic and structural contribution
Modelling the influence of RKIP on the ERK signalling pathway using the stochastic process algebra PEPA
This paper examines the influence of the Raf Kinase Inhibitor Protein (RKIP) on the Extracellular signal Regulated Kinase (ERK) signalling pathway [5] through modelling in a Markovian process algebra, PEPA [11]. Two models of the system are presented, a reagent-centric view and a pathway-centric view. The models capture functionality at the level of subpathway, rather than at a molecular level. Each model affords a different perspective of the pathway and analysis. We demonstrate the two models to be formally equivalent using the timing-aware bisimulation defined over PEPA models and discuss the biological significance
Computational actuator disc models for wind and tidal applications
