    Physical Unclonable Function Reliability on Reconfigurable Hardware and Reliability Degradation with Temperature and Supply Voltage Variations

    A hardware security solution using a Physical Unclonable Function (PUF) is a promising approach to ensure security for physical systems. PUF utilizes the inherent instance-specific parameters of physical objects and it is evaluated based on the performance parameters such as uniqueness, reliability, randomness, and tamper evidence of the Challenge and Response Pairs (CRPs). These performance parameters are affected by operating conditions such as temperature and supply voltage variations. In addition, PUF implementation on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) platform is proven to be more complicated than PUF implementation on Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) technologies. The automatic placement and routing of logic cells in FPGA can affect the performance of PUFs due to path delay imbalance. In this work, the impact of power supply and temperature variations, on the reliability of an arbiter PUF is studied. Simulation results are conducted to determine the effects of these varying conditions on the CRPs. Simulation results show that ± 10% of power supply variation can affect the reliability of an arbiter PUF by about 51%, similarly temperature fluctuation between -40 0C and +60 0C reduces the PUF reliability by 58%. In addition, a new methodology to implement a reliable arbiter PUF on an FPGA platform is presented. Instead of using an extra delay measurement module, the Chip Planner tool for FPGA is used for manually placement to minimize the path delay misalignment to less than 8 ps

    Summer Workshop on Near-Earth Resources

    The possible large scale use of extraterrestrial resources was addressed, either to construct structures in space or to return to Earth as supplements for terrestrial resources. To that end, various specific recommendations were made by the participants in the summer study on near-Earth resources, held at La Jolla, California, 6 to 13 August, 1977. The Moon and Earth-approaching asteroids were considered. Summaries are included of what is known about their compositions and what needs to be learned, along with recommendations for missions designed to provide the needed data. Tentative schedules for these projects are also offered

    Astrophysical Simulations and Data Analyses on the Formation, Detection, and Habitability of Moons Around Extrasolar Planets

    While the solar system contains as many as about 20 times more moons than planets, no moon has been definitively detected around any of the thousands of extrasolar planets so far. The question naturally arises why an exomoon detection has not yet been achieved. This cumulative habilitation thesis covers three of the key aspects related to the ongoing search for extrasolar moons: 1. the possible formation scenarios for moons around extrasolar planets; 2. new detection strategies for these moons; and 3. the potential of exomoons as hosts to extrasolar life. This work is structured as follows. Part I gives a broad introduction to the field of extrasolar moons with special attention to their formation, detection, and habitability. Part II presents the cumulative part of this thesis with a total of 16 peer-reviewed journal publications listing the author of this thesis as a lead author, and six publications with the author of this thesis as a co-author. Part III shares some insights into our ongoing research on exomoons in collaboration with master student Anina Timmermann at the Georg-August University of G\"ottingen and former PhD student Kai Rodenbeck at the International Max Planck Research School for Solar System Science and the University of G\"ottingen.     This book is the 8th in the Bit Bang series of books produced as multidisciplinary teamwork exercises by doctoral students participating in the course Bit Bang 8: Digitalization at Aalto University during the academic year 2015–2016. Digitalization has brought great opportunities for economic growth, productivity gain and job creation in our societies, and will change the way industry will operate. Bit Bang 8 addressed the topic of digitalization from the perspective of its economic, environmental and social sustainability. The course elaborated on the interconnectedness of these phenomena, and linked them to possible future scenarios, global megatrends and ethical considerations. How will digitalization shape our future? How can we prepare can prepare our societies to respond to these changes? Working in teams, the students set out to answer questions related to the digitalization and to brainstorm radical scenarios of what the future could hold. This joint publication contains articles produced as teamwork assignments for the course, in which the students were encouraged to take novel and radical views on digitalization.     [<sup>18</sup>F]fluorination of biorelevant arylboronic acid pinacol ester scaffolds synthesized by convergence techniques

    Aim: The development of small molecules through convergent multicomponent reactions (MCR) has been boosted during the last decade due to the ability to synthesize, virtually without any side-products, numerous small drug-like molecules with several degrees of structural diversity.(1) The association of positron emission tomography (PET) labeling techniques in line with the “one-pot” development of biologically active compounds has the potential to become relevant not only for the evaluation and characterization of those MCR products through molecular imaging, but also to increase the library of radiotracers available. Therefore, since the [18F]fluorination of arylboronic acid pinacol ester derivatives tolerates electron-poor and electro-rich arenes and various functional groups,(2) the main goal of this research work was to achieve the 18F-radiolabeling of several different molecules synthesized through MCR. Materials and Methods: [18F]Fluorination of boronic acid pinacol esters was first extensively optimized using a benzaldehyde derivative in relation to the ideal amount of Cu(II) catalyst and precursor to be used, as well as the reaction solvent. Radiochemical conversion (RCC) yields were assessed by TLC-SG. The optimized radiolabeling conditions were subsequently applied to several structurally different MCR scaffolds comprising biologically relevant pharmacophores (e.g. β-lactam, morpholine, tetrazole, oxazole) that were synthesized to specifically contain a boronic acid pinacol ester group. Results: Radiolabeling with fluorine-18 was achieved with volumes (800 μl) and activities (≤ 2 GBq) compatible with most radiochemistry techniques and modules. In summary, an increase in the quantities of precursor or Cu(II) catalyst lead to higher conversion yields. An optimal amount of precursor (0.06 mmol) and Cu(OTf)2(py)4 (0.04 mmol) was defined for further reactions, with DMA being a preferential solvent over DMF. RCC yields from 15% to 76%, depending on the scaffold, were reproducibly achieved. Interestingly, it was noticed that the structure of the scaffolds, beyond the arylboronic acid, exerts some influence in the final RCC, with electron-withdrawing groups in the para position apparently enhancing the radiolabeling yield. Conclusion: The developed method with high RCC and reproducibility has the potential to be applied in line with MCR and also has a possibility to be incorporated in a later stage of this convergent “one-pot” synthesis strategy. Further studies are currently ongoing to apply this radiolabeling concept to fluorine-containing approved drugs whose boronic acid pinacol ester precursors can be synthesized through MCR (e.g. atorvastatin)
